1 Mein Sohn, behalte meine Reden! Bei dir verwahr, was ich dich heiße!
My son, keep my sayings, and, my commandments, treasure by thee;
2 Bewahr dir meine Vorschriften, so wirst du leben, und meine Weisung wie den Augapfel!
Keep my commandments and live, and mine instruction, as the pupil of thine eye;
3 Bind sie an deine Finger! Auf deines Herzens Tafel schreibe sie!
Bind them upon thy fingers, write them, on the tablet of thy heart;
4 Zur Weisheit sprich: "Du bist mir Schwester", nenn Einsicht deine Freundin,
Say unto wisdom, My sister, thou! and, an acquaintance, call thou, understanding:
5 auf daß sie dich vor einem andere Weib bewahre, vor einer Fremden, die einschmeichelnd redet!
That thou mayest be kept, from the woman that is a stranger, from the female unknown, who, with her speeches, doth flatter.
6 Durchs Fenster meines Hauses, durchs Gitter schaute ich hinaus.
For, in the window of my house, through my lattice, I looked out;
7 Da sah ich einen Jüngling bei den noch Unerfahrenen, bemerkte bei den jungen Leuten einen Unvorsichtigen,
And saw among the simple ones, discerned among the youths, A young man lacking sense;
8 der auf der Gasse nahe einer Ecke ging und in der Richtung meines Hauses schritt
Passing through the street, near her corner, and, on the way to her house, he sauntered along;
9 in Dämmerung, am Abende des Tags, in stiller Nachtzeit, in der Dunkelheit.
In the twilight, in the evening of the day, in the midst of the night, and the gloom;
10 Da tritt auf einmal ihm das Weib entgegen im Dirnenanzug mit geschnürter Brust.
And lo! a woman, came to meet him, attired as one unchaste, of a wily heart.
11 Unruhig trieb sie sich herum; zu Hause hatten ihre Füße keine Ruhe.
Boisterous, is she, and rebellious, In her house, abide not her feet;
12 Ein Schritt jetzt auf die Straße und auf den Markt ein Schritt; sie lauerte an jeder Ecke.
Now outside, now in the broadways, and, near every corner, she lieth in wait:
13 Jetzt hascht sie ihn, küßt ihn; mit frecher Miene redet sie ihn an:
So she caught him, and kissed him, and, embolding her face, she said to him:
14 "Schlachtopfer darzubringen, lag mir ob; ich habe heute mein Gelübde nun entrichtet.
Peace-offerings, are by me, to-day, have I paid my vows;
15 Deswegen bin ich ausgegangen, um dich zu suchen. Ich habe dich gefunden.
For this cause, came I forth to meet thee, to seek diligently thy face, and I have found thee:
16 Mit Decken habe ich bedeckt mein Lager, mit buntem Linnen aus Ägypten.
Coverlets, have I spread on my couch of pleasure, dark-hued stuffs, of the yarn of Egypt;
17 Mit Myrrhen habe ich besprengt mein Lager, mit Aloë und Zimtgewürz.
I have sprinkled my bed, with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon:
18 So komm! Wir wollen bis zum Morgen an der Liebe uns berauschen, in Liebe uns genießen.
Come! let us take our fill of endearments, until morning, let us delight ourselves with caresses;
19 Der Mann ist nicht daheim; er zog auf Reisen in die Ferne.
For the husband is not in his house, he hath gone on a journey afar;
20 Er nahm den Beutel samt dem Gelde mit sich; am Vollmondstag erst kehrt er wieder heim."
A bag of silver, hath he taken in his hand, On the day of the full moon, will he enter his house.
21 So bringt sie ihn herum durch ihr verführerisches Reden und reißt ihn fort durch ihre glatten Lippen.
She turneth him aside, with her great persuasiveness, —with the flattery of her lips, she compelleth him:
22 Er folgt ihr nach, der Harmlose, gleich einem Stier, den man zur Schlachtbank führt, gleich einem Hund zum Stricke,
Going after her instantly, as an ox, to the slaughter, he entereth, and, as in fetters, unto the correction of a fool.
23 gleich einem Hirsch dahin, wo ihm ein Pfeil die Leber spaltet, gleich einem Vogel, der zur Schlinge eilt, und merkt es nicht, daß es sein Leben gilt.
Until an arrow cleaveth his liver, as a bird hasteth into a snare, and knoweth not, that, for his life, it is!
24 Nun, Söhne, horcht auf mich! Auf meines Mundes Reden merket!
Now, therefore, ye sons, hearken unto me, and attend, to the sayings of my mouth;
25 Laß nicht dein Herz zu ihren Wegen biegen! Verirr dich nicht auf ihre Steige!
Let not thy heart, turn aside to her ways, Do not go astray, in her paths.
26 Denn viel sind der Erschlagenen, die sie gefällt, und viele sind's, die sie gemordet.
For, many, wounded, hath she caused to fall, —yea strong men, slain wholly by her:
