1 Mein Sohn! Hast du für deinen Nächsten dich verbürgt, hast Handschlag du für einen anderen gegeben,
My son, if thou hast become surety for thy friend, if thou hast stricken thy hand for a stranger,
2 bist du verstrickt durch deines Mundes Reden, durch deines Mundes Worte selbst gefangen,
thou art snared with the words of thy mouth, thou art taken with the words of thy mouth.
3 dann, Sohn, sieh zu, daß du dich rettest, da du doch in die Hand des Nächsten eingeschlagen: Geh ohne Säumen hin! Bestürme deinen Nächsten!
Do this now, my son, and deliver thyself, since thou hast come into the hand of thy friend: go, humble thyself, and be urgent with thy friend.
4 Gönn deinen Augen keinen Schlaf, nicht deinen Augenwimpern Schlummer!
Give not sleep to thine eyes, nor slumber to thine eyelids:
5 Errette dich gleich der Gazelle aus der Schlinge, gleich einem Vogel aus des Fängers Hand!
deliver thyself as a gazelle from the hand [of the hunter], and as a bird from the hand of the fowler.
6 Zur Ameise, du Fauler, geh, schau ihre Art und werde klug
Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways and be wise:
7 durch sie die keinen Fürsten hat, nicht Amtmann, nicht Gebieter,
which having no chief, overseer, or ruler,
8 sie, die im Sommer schon ihr Brot bereitet und in der Ernte ihre Speise sammelt!
provideth her bread in the summer, [and] gathereth her food in the harvest.
9 Wie lange, Fauler, willst du liegen? Wann willst du dich vom Schlaf erheben?
How long, sluggard, wilt thou lie down? When wilt thou arise out of thy sleep?
10 "Ach noch ein wenig Schlaf, ein wenig Schlummer, ein wenig noch die Hände ineinander legen, um zu ruhen!"
A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest!
11 Schon kommt die Armut über dich, gleich der des Strolches, und Mangel gleich dem eines Bettlers.
So shall thy poverty come as a roving plunderer, and thy penury as an armed man.
12 Ein Teufelsmann ist der Halunke, der in der Falschheit seines Mundes wandelt,
A man of Belial, a wicked person, is he that goeth about with a perverse mouth;
13 der mit dem Auge blinzelt, mit dem Fuße deutet, mit seinen Fingern Zeichen gibt
he winketh with his eyes, he speaketh with his feet, he teacheth with his fingers;
14 und der Verkehrtes sinnt im Herzen und allzeit Streitereien anfängt.
deceits are in his heart; he deviseth mischief at all times, he soweth discords.
15 Das Unheil, das er stiftet, kommt ganz plötzlich; in einem Augenblicke schlägt er unheilbare Wunden.
Therefore shall his calamity come suddenly: in a moment shall he be broken, and without remedy.
16 Sechs Dinge sind dem Herrn verhaßt; ein Greuel sind ihm sieben:
These six [things] doth Jehovah hate, yea, seven are an abomination unto him:
17 hochmütige Augen, falsche Zunge, Hände, die unschuldig Blut vergießen,
haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood;
18 ein Herz, das arge Tücke sinnt, und Füße, die behend zum Schlechten eilen;
a heart that deviseth wicked imaginations; feet that are swift in running to mischief;
19 wer Lügen haucht als falscher Zeuge; wer Händel zwischen Brüdern stiftet.
a false witness that uttereth lies, and he that soweth discords among brethren.
20 Mein Sohn, beachte das Gebot des Vaters! Verwirf nicht deiner Mutter Mahnung
My son, observe thy father's commandment, and forsake not the teaching of thy mother;
21 und bind sie dir aufs Herz für alle Zeit! Leg sie um deinen Hals als Schmuck!
bind them continually upon thy heart, tie them about thy neck:
22 Bei deinem Gehen möge sie dich leiten, bei deinem Niederlegen dich bewachen, und dich ansprechen, wachst du auf.
when thou walkest, it shall lead thee; when thou sleepest, it shall keep thee; and [when] thou awakest, it shall talk with thee.
23 Denn das Gebot ist eine Leuchte, ein Licht die Weisung; ein Weg zum Leben ist die Mahnung und die Warnung.
For the commandment is a lamp, and the teaching a light, and reproofs of instruction are the way of life:
24 Denn sie bewahren dich vorm schlimmen Weib und vor der Fremden glatter Zunge.
to keep thee from the evil woman, from the flattery of the tongue of a strange woman.
25 Nach ihrer Schönheit giere nicht in deinem Herzen! Sie fange nicht mit ihren Blicken dich!
Lust not after her beauty in thy heart, neither let her take thee with her eyelids;
26 Für eine Dirne geht ein Brotlaib drauf; doch eine Ehefrau macht Jagd auf teures Leben.
for by means of a whorish woman [a man is brought] to a loaf of bread, and another's wife doth hunt for the precious soul.
27 Kann jemand Feuer in den Schoß einscharren, und seine Kleider würden nicht dabei versengt?
Can a man take fire in his bosom, and his garments not be burned?
28 Auf glühende Kohlen sollte jemand treten, und seine Füße würden nicht verbrannt?
Can one go upon hot coals, and his feet not be scorched?
29 Also ergeht es dem, der zu des Nächsten Weibe geht; wer sie berührt, der bleibt nicht ungestraft.
So he that goeth in to his neighbour's wife: whosoever toucheth her shall not be innocent.
30 Verachtet man nicht einen Dieb, auch wenn er stiehlt, bloß um die Gier zu stillen, dieweil ihn hungert?
They do not despise a thief, if he steal to satisfy his soul when he is hungry:
31 Wird er ertappt, dann muß er siebenfach ersetzen, muß seines Hauses Hab und Gut hingeben.
and if he be found, he shall restore sevenfold; he shall give all the substance of his house.
32 Wer Ehebruch mit einem Weibe treibt, ist unsinnig; nur wer sich selber ins Verderben stürzen will, tut so etwas.
Whoso committeth adultery with a woman is void of understanding: he that doeth it destroyeth his own soul.
33 Nur Schläge, Schande findet er, und seine Schmach ist unauslöschlich.
A wound and contempt shall he get; and his reproach shall not be wiped away.
34 Des Ehemannes Grimm wird leidenschaftlich aufgeregt; er schont ihn nicht am Tag der Rache.
For jealousy is the rage of a man, and he will not spare in the day of vengeance;
35 Mit irgendeinem Reuegeld beruhigt er sich nicht; er gibt sich nicht zufrieden, auch wenn du noch soviel Geschenke gibst.
he will not regard any ransom, neither will he rest content though thou multipliest [thy] gifts.
