1 Die Worte Agurs, Sohnes des Jake, aus Massa: Es spricht ein Mann mit Namen Loitiel: "Ich kann Gott nicht begreifen, und dabei bleibt es.
These things says the man to them that trust in God; and I cease.
2 Zu töricht bin ich, einen Mann recht zu verstehen, und mir fehlt der Verstand, um einen Menschen zu begreifen.
For I am the most simple of all men, and there is not in me the wisdom of men.
3 Und wäre ich noch weiser, wie könnte einen Heiligen ich gar begreifen?
God has taught me wisdom, and I know the knowledge of the holy.
4 Ist jemand bis zum Himmel aufgestiegen oder auch von dort herabgekommen? Hat jemand Wind in seine Fäuste eingesammelt oder Wasser in ein Tuch gebunden? Wer hat der Erde Enden hingestellt? Wie heißt doch er? Wie heißt sein Sohn, wenn du es weißt?"
Who has gone up to heaven, and come down? who has gathered the winds in his bosom? who has wrapped up the waters in a garment? who has dominion of all the ends of the earth? what is his name? or what is the name of his children?
5 Geläutert ist doch jedes Gotteswort; ein Schild ist er für die, die auf ihn bauen.
For all the words of God are tried in the fire, and he defends those that reverence him.
6 Füg seinen Worten nichts hinzu, auf daß er dich nicht tadeln muß, weil du dich nicht bewährst!
Add not to his words, lest he reprove you, and you be made a liar.
7 Ich bitte zweierlei von dir. Versag mir's nicht, bevor mein Leben ich verwirke!
Two things I ask of you; take not favour from me before I die.
8 Falschheit und Lügenwort laß ferne von mir sein; Armut und Reichtum gib mir nicht! - Laß mich mein zugemessen Teil an Speise nehmen! -
Remove far from me vanity and falsehood: and give me not wealth [or] poverty; but appoint me what is needful and sufficient:
9 Ich möchte sonst verleugnen, würde ich zu satt, und sagen: "Wer ist denn der Herr?", und wäre ich ein Bettler, könnt ich stehlen und belasten meines Gottes Namen.
lest I be filled and become false, and say, Who sees me? or be poor and steal, and swear [vainly] by the name of God.
10 Verleumde nicht den Knecht bei seinem Herrn! Sonst flucht er dir, und du bist selber schuld daran.
Deliver not a servant into the hands of his master, lest he curse you, and you be utterly destroyed.
11 Ja, das Geschlecht, das seinem Vater flucht und nimmer seine Mutter segnet,
A wicked generation curse their father, and do not bless their mother.
12 ja, das Geschlecht, das rein sich dünkt und doch von seinem Unrat nicht gereinigt ist,
A wicked generation judge themselves to be just, but do not cleanse their way.
13 ja, das Geschlecht, das übermütig schaut, und dessen Blicke hochgetragen,
A wicked generation have lofty eyes, and exalt themselves with their eyelids.
14 ja, das Geschlecht, des Zähne Schwerter sind und des Gebiß besteht aus Messern, um von der Erde Elende hinwegzufressen und Arme aus der Menschen Mitte,
A wicked generation have swords [for] teeth and jaw teeth [as] knives, so as to destroy and devour the lowly from the earth, and the poor of them from amongst men.
15 das gleicht dem Vampyr, der die Weiber schwer zerfleischt: "Gib her! Gib her!" Drei sind's, die niemals satt werden, und vier, die sprechen nie: "Genug!"
The horse-leech had three dearly beloved daughters: and these three did not satisfy her; and the fourth was not contented so as to say, Enough.
16 Die Unterwelt, verschlossener Mutterschoß, die Erde, die des Wassers niemals satt, das Feuer, das nie spricht: "Genug!" (Sheol h7585)
The grave, and the love of a woman, and the earth not filled with water; water also and fire will not say, It is enough. (Sheol h7585)
17 Ein Auge, das des Vaters spottet, die greise Mutter selbst verächtlich findet, das müssen Raben aus den Höhlen hacken und junge Adler fressen.
The eye that laughs to scorn a father, and dishonours the old age of a mother, let the ravens of the valleys pick it out, and let the young eagles devour it.
18 Drei sind's, die mir zu wunderbar erscheinen, und vier sind's, die ich nicht begreife:
Moreover there are three things impossible for me to comprehend, and the fourth I know not:
19 des Adlers Weg am Himmel, der Schlange Weg auf einem Felsen, des Schiffes Weg inmitten eines Meeres, des Mannes Weg bei einem jungen Weibe.
the track of a flying eagle; and the ways of a serpent on a rock; and the paths of a ship passing through the sea; and the ways of a man in youth.
20 So ist der Weg der Ehebrecherin; sie ißt und wischt den Mund sich ab und spricht: "Ich habe doch nichts Unrechtes getan."
Such is the way of an adulterous woman, who having washed herself from what she has done, says she has done nothing amiss.
21 Ein Land kann unter drei erbeben und unter vieren es nicht aushalten:
By three thing the earth is troubled, and the fourth it can’t bear:
22 bei einem Sklaven, wenn er König wird, bei einem Narren, wenn er Brot in Fülle hat,
if a servant reign; or a fool be filled with food;
23 bei einer Ungeliebten, wenn in Gunst sie kommt, bei einer Magd, wenn sie an ihrer Herrin Stelle tritt.
or if a maidservant should cast out her own mistress; and if a hateful woman should marry a good man.
24 Vier sind die Kleinsten auf der Erde, und doch sind sie so weise:
And [there are] four very little things upon the earth, but these are wiser than the wise:
25 die Ameisen, ein Volk, das keine Macht besitzt, und doch bereiten sie im Sommer ihre Nahrung vor.
the ants which are weak, and [yet] prepare [their] food in summer;
26 Die Klippdachse, ein Volk, dem Stärke nicht zu eigen ist, und dennoch legen sie in Felsen ihre Wohnung an.
the rabbits also [are] a feeble race, who make their houses in the rocks.
27 Heuschrecken haben keinen König, und dennoch zieht der ganze Schwarm geordnet aus.
The locusts have no king, and [yet] march orderly at one command.
28 Die Echse kannst du mit den Händen greifen, und doch weilt sie in königlichen Schlössern.
And the eft, which supports itself by [its] hands, and is easily taken, dwells in the fortresses of kings.
29 Drei sind's, die stattlich schreiten, und vier, die würdevoll einhergehen:
And there are three things which go well, and a fourth which passes along finely.
30 der Löwe, Held der Tiere, der nie vor jemand umkehrt,
A lion's whelp, stronger than [all other] beasts, which turns not away, nor fears [any] beast;
31 der schmächtige Star, der Ziegenbock, der König, der sein Kriegervolk befehligt.
and a cock walking in boldly amongst the hens, and the goat leading the herd; and a king publicly speaking before a nation.
32 Benahmst du dich im Übermute töricht, oder hast du so etwas geplant, die Hand auf deinen Mund!
If you abandon yourself to mirth, and stretch forth your hand in a quarrel, you shall be disgraced.
33 Schlägt man die Milch, so gibt es Butter; drückt man die Nase, gibt es Blut, und drückt man auf die Zornesader, gibt es Streit.
Milk out milk, and there shall be butter, and if you wing [one's] nostrils there shall come out blood: so if you extort words, there will come forth quarrels and strifes.
