1 Freu dich nicht auf den Morgen! Denn du weißt nicht, was ein Tag gebären mag.
Boast not for tomorrow, for thou knowest not what the day to come may bring forth.
2 Ein anderer Mund, nicht deiner rühme dich, ein fremder, doch nicht deine eigenen Lippen!
Let another praise thee, and not thy own mouth: a stranger, and not thy own lips.
3 Der Stein ist schwer; gewichtig ist der Sand; doch der Verdruß, von einem Toren dir bereitet, ist schwerer als die beiden.
A stone is heavy, and sand weighty: but the anger of a fool is heavier than them both.
4 Die Wut mag grimmig sein; der Zorn mag überschäumen; doch wer kann vor der Eifersucht bestehen?
Anger hath no mercy, nor fury when it breaketh forth: and who can bear the violence of one provoked?
5 Viel besser Rüge, die enthüllt, als Liebe, die verschleiert.
Open rebuke is better than hidden love.
6 Aufrichtig sind gemeint des Freundes Schläge; des Feindes Küsse sind geheuchelt.
Better are the wounds of a friend, than the deceitful kisses of an enemy.
7 Dem satten Gaumen ekelt's vor dem Honigseim; dem Hungrigen ist alles Bittere süß.
A soul that is full shall tread upon the honeycomb: and a soul that is hungry shall take even bitter for sweet.
8 Ein Vogel, der dem Nest entflieht: so ist ein Mann, der seinen Heimatort verläßt.
As a bird that wandereth from her nest, so is a man that leaveth his place.
9 Salböl und Räucherwerk erheitern das Gemüt; des Freundes Süßigkeit geht über die des Duftgehölzes.
Ointment and perfumes rejoice the heart: and the good counsels of a friend are sweet to the soul.
10 Den alten Freund des Hauses übergehe nicht! Klopf nicht an deines Bruders Haus am Tage deiner Not! Viel besser ist ein Nachbar in der Nähe als ein Bruder in der Ferne!
Thy own friend, and thy father’s friend forsake not: and go not into thy brother’s house in the day of thy affliction. Better is a neighbour that is near, than a brother afar off.
11 Mein Sohn! Sei weise und erfreu mein Herz! Damit ich rechte Antwort einem geben kann, der mich beschimpfen will.
Study wisdom, my son, and make my heart joyful, that thou mayst give an answer to him that reproacheth.
12 Der Kluge sah das Unheil und versteckte sich; die Toren gingen weiter und erlitten Schaden.
The prudent man seeing evil hideth himself: little ones passing on have suffered losses.
13 Wer einem andern bürgt, dem nimm sein Kleid! Pfänd ihn um Fremder willen!
Take away his garment that hath been surety for a stranger: and take from him a pledge for strangers.
14 Wer seinen Nächsten allzu laut und gar zu früh lobpreist, dem kann's als Fluchen angerechnet werden.
He that blesseth his neighbour with a loud voice, rising in the night, shall be like to him that curseth.
15 Ein triefend Dach zur Zeit des Regenwetters ist ein zänkisch Weib; sie gleichen sich.
Roofs dropping through in a cold day, and a contentious woman are alike.
16 Der Nordwind ist ein rauher Wind; und er wird doch der "Glückverheißende" genannt.
He that retaineth her, is as he that would hold the wind, and shall call in the oil of his right hand.
17 Wie Eisen sich dem Eisen eint, so eint ein Mann sich seinem Freund.
Iron sharpeneth iron, so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.
18 Des Feigenbaumes Frucht genießt, wer diesen pflegt, und wer den seines Herren wartet, findet seinen Lohn.
He that keepeth the fig tree, shall eat the fruit thereof: and he that is the keeper of his master, shall be glorified.
19 Gleichwie beim Wasser sich die Form der Form anpaßt, so auch des Menschen Herz dem Herzen.
As the faces of them that look therein, shine in the water, so-the hearts of men are laid open to the wise.
20 Der Abgrund und die Unterwelt sind unersättlich; so sind der Menschen Augen gleichfalls nicht zu sättigen. (Sheol h7585)
Hell and destruction are never filled: so the eyes of men are never satisfied. (Sheol h7585)
21 Nach Silber wird der Tiegel eingeschätzt; der Ofen nach dem Gold, ein Mann nach dem, was er bewundert.
As silver is tried in the fining-pot and gold in the furnace: so a man is tried by the mouth of him that praiseth. The heart of the wicked seeketh after evils, but the righteous heart seeketh after knowledge.
22 Zerstießest du den Toren selbst im Mörser, selbst mitten in der Grütze mit der Keule, nicht würde seine Torheit von ihm weichen.
Though thou shouldst bray a fool in the mortar, as when a pestle striketh upon sodden barley, his folly would not be taken from him.
23 Hab acht auf deine besten Schafe, sei wachsam auf die Herden!
Be diligent to know the countenance of thy cattle, and consider thy own flocks:
24 Denn bares Geld reicht nicht für immer; nicht währt der Zins für alle Zeiten.
For thou shalt not always have power: but a crown shall be given to generation and generation.
25 Sprießt Gras empor, erscheint das frische Grün, und werden auf den Bergen Kräuter eingeheimst,
The meadows are open, and the green herbs have appeared, and the hay is gathered out of the mountains.
26 dann hast du Lämmer für die Kleidung und Böcke zum Erwerb von Feldern
Lambs are for thy clothing: and kids for the price of the field.
27 und Ziegenmilch genug für deine und für deines Hauses Nahrung und Lebensmittel für die Mägde.
Let the milk of the goats be enough for thy food, and for the necessities of thy house, and for maintenance for thy handmaids.
