4 Mose 23

1 Da sprach Bileam zu Balak: "Baue mir der Altäre sieben und bereite mir hier sieben junge Stiere und sieben Widder!"

Then said Balaam unto Balak: Build me here seven altars, —and prepare me here, seven bullocks and seven rams.

2 Und Balak tat, wie Bileam verlangt hatte. So brachten Balak und Bileam Stiere und Widder auf den Altären dar.

And Balak did as Balaam had spoken, —and Balak and Balaam caused to ascend a bullock and a ram on each altar.

3 Da sprach Bileam zu Balak: "Bleibe du bei deinem Brandopfer! Ich aber will hingehen. Vielleicht tritt mir der Herr entgegen. Was er mich schauen läßt, melde ich dir." So ging er in die Einsamkeit.

Then said Balaam unto Balak: Station thyself by thine ascending-sacrifice, and let me go my way—peradventure Yahweh may come and meet me, and what thing soever he may show me, I will tell thee. So he went his way to a bare height.

4 Da begegnete Gott dem Bileam. Und Bileam sprach zu ihm: "Ich habe der Altäre sieben hergerichtet und Stiere und Widder auf den Altären dargebracht."

And God came unto Balaam, —so he said unto him The seven altars, have I built in a row, and have caused to ascend, bullock and a ram on each altar.

5 Da legte der Herr dem Bileam ein Wort in den Mund und sprach: "Zu Balak kehr um und sprich also!"

And Yahweh put a word into the mouth of Balaam, —and said—Return unto Balak, and, thus, shalt thou speak.

6 Da kehrte er zu ihm zurück; er aber stand noch bei seinem Brandopfer, er und alle Häuptlinge Moabs.

So he returned unto him, and lo! he was stationed by his ascending-sacrifice, —he, and all the princes of Moab.

7 Da hob er seinen Spruch an und sprach: "Aus Aram holt mich Balak, der König Moabs, aus des Ostlands Bergen: 'Hierher! Verfluch mir Jakob! Hierher! Beschreie Israel!'

So he took up his parable and said, —From Aram, doth Balak conduct me, The king of Moab, from the mountains of the East, Come thou! curse me Jacob, Yea, come thou! rage on Israel.

8 Wie soll ich fluchen dem, dem Gott nicht flucht? Wie den beschreien, den nicht der Herr beschreit?

How can I revile one whom GOD hath not reviled? Yea, how can I rage on one on whom Yahweh hath not raged?

9 Ich seh' es von den Felsenspitzen; ich schau es von den Hügeln. fürwahr, ein Volk, das abgesondert wohnt und unter Heiden sich nicht mischt!

Surely from the head of the rocks, do I see him, Yea, from the hills, do I observe him, —Lo! a people, who alone doth dwell, And among the nations, he doth not reckon himself.

10 Wer zählt denn Jakobs Staub? Wer mißt denn Israels feinen Staub? Möcht' ich das Sterben der Gerechten sterben! Und möcht' mein Ende wie das ihre sein!"

Who hath counted the dust of Jacob? Or who hath numbered the fourth part of Israel? Let me die the death of the upright, And let my hereafter be like his!

11 Da sprach Balak zu Bileam: "Was hast du mir getan? Meine Feinde zu verwünschen hole ich dich, und nun segnest du sie."

Then said Balak unto Balaam, What hast thou done for me? To revile mine enemies, I summoned thee, and lo! thou hast kept on blessing.

12 Da antwortete er und sprach: "Muß ich nicht genau aussprechen, was mir der Herr in den Mund legt?"

And he answered and said, —Was it not to be so that whatsoever Yahweh should put into my mouth, the same, should I take heed to speak?

13 Da sprach Balak zu ihm: "Geh mit mir an einen anderen Ort, von wo du es noch sehen kannst! Nur Umrisse brauchst du zu sehen. Ganz brauchst du es nicht zu sehen. So verwünsche es mir von dort!"

Then said Balak unto him—Come, I pray thee, with me unto another place, from whence thou mayest see him, nothing but his utmost part, shalt thou see, but all of him, shalt thou not see, —and so revile me him from thence.

14 So nahm er ihn nach dem Späherfelde zur Höhe des Pisga, baute dort sieben Altäre und opferte Stiere und Widder auf den Altären.

And he took him to the field of Zophim, unto the head of Pisgah, —and built seven altars, and caused to ascend a bullock and a ram on each altar.

15 Da sprach Bileam zu Balak: "Bleib hier bei deinem Brandopfer! Ich aber gehe dorthin zu der Begegnung."

Then said he to Balak, Station thyself here by thine ascending-sacrifice, —while, I, meet him yonder.

16 Da begegnete der Herr dem Bileam, legte ihm ein Wort in den Mund und sprach- "Kehre zu Balak zurück und rede so!"

And Yahweh met Balaam, and put a word into his mouth, —and said—Return unto Balak and thus shalt thou speak.

17 Da kam er zu ihm. Er aber stand noch bei seinem Brandopfer, und die Häuptlinge Moabs bei ihm. Und Balak sprach zu ihm: "Was hat der Herr geredet?"

So he came in unto him and, there he was-stationed by his ascending-sacrifice, and the princes of Moab with him. And Balak said unto him, What hath Yahweh spoken?

18 Da hob er seinen Spruch an, also sprechend: "Auf, Balak! Höre Du, Sohn des Sippor, hör mir zu!

Then took he up his parable and said, —Rise, Balak, and hear, Give ear unto me son of Zippor!

19 Nicht ist Gott wie ein Mann, daß er Sein Wort nicht hielte, nicht wie ein Menschenkind, daß er bereute. Soll er nur reden und nichts tun, verheißen und dann nichts erfüllen?

GOD is, not a man, that he should lie, Nor a son of Adam, that he should repent, —Hath, he, said, and will not perform? Yea spoken, and will not make it stand fast?

20 Fürwahr, von Segen habe ich vernommen, er hat gesegnet. Ich kann's nicht wenden.

Lo! to bless, have I received [command], —And I will bless, nor will I take it back.

21 In Jakob sieht man nichts Verkehrtes; in Israel schaut man kein Ungemach. Der Herr, sein Gott, mit ihm; bei ihm ist Kriegsjubel.

He hath not discovered trouble in Jacob, Neither hath he seen wretchedness in Israel, —Yahweh, his God, is with him, And, the acclaim of a king, in his midst:

22 Gott hat es aus Ägypten weggeführt. Wie Wisents Hörner ist er ihm.

GOD having brought them forth out of Egypt, The very horns of the buffalo, are his:

23 Denn gegen Jakob hilft nicht Zauberkunst und nicht Beschwörung gegen Israel. Schon wird es Israel und Jakob angekündigt, was Gott im Werke hat.

Surely, there is no enchantment against Jacob, Nor divination against Israel, —Now, shall it be said—Of Jacob and of Israel, What hath GOD wrought!

24 Dies Volk! Wie eine Löwin steht es auf, erhebt sich einem Löwen gleich, und legt sich nicht, eh' es den Raub verzehrt und von Erschlagenen Blut getrunken."

Lo, a people, like a lioness, shall rise, And like a strong lion, shall rouse himself up; He will not lie down till he eat the torn, And the blood of the slain, he drink.

25 Da sprach Balak zu Bileam: "Verwünschest du es nicht, dann brauchst du es auch nicht zu segnen."

Then said Balak unto Balaam, Thou shalt neither revile, him, —nor bless him.

26 Da antwortete Bileam und sprach zu Balak: "Habe ich dir nicht gesagt: 'Ich tue, was der Herr mir sagt'?"

And Balaam responded, and said unto Balak, —Spake I not unto thee, saying, All that Yahweh shall speak, that, must I do?

27 Da sprach Balak zu Bileam: "So geh! Ich nehme dich an einen anderen Ort. Vielleicht ist es Gott genehm, daß du es von dort aus mir verfluchst."

And Balak said unto Balaam, Come, I pray thee! let me take thee unto another place, —peradventure, it may be right in the eyes of God, that thou revile me him. from thence.

28 Und Balak nahm Bileam auf den Gipfel des Peor, der auf das Ödland herabschaut.

So Balak took Balaam, —unto the head of Peor, that looketh over the face of the Jeshimon.

29 Da sprach Bileam zu Balak: "Bau mir hier der Altäre sieben und richte mir hier sieben junge Stiere und sieben Widder her!"

And Balaam said unto Balak, Build me here, seven altars, —and prepare me here, seven bullocks and seven rams.

30 Da tat Balak, wie Bileam gesagt, und opferte auf den Altären Stiere und Widder.

And Balak did as Balaam said, —and caused to ascend a bullock and a ram on each altar.
