Nehemia 13
1 An jenem Tage wurde dem Volke aus dem Buche Mosis laut vorgelesen. Man fand da geschrieben, daß nie Ammoniter oder Moabiter in die Gemeinde Gottes kommen dürfen.
On that day they read in the Book of Moses in the hearing of the people. It was found written in it that no Ammonite or Moabite should come into the assembly of God, forever.
2 Sie hatten den Söhnen Israels nicht Brot noch Wasser angeboten, sondern den Bileam gedungen, sie zu verfluchen. Aber unser Gott wandelte den Fluch in Segen.
This was because they had not come to the people of Israel with bread and with water, but they had hired Balaam to curse Israel. However, our God turned the curse into a blessing.
3 Als sie die Lehre hörten, schieden sie alle Mischlinge aus Israel aus.
As soon as they heard the law, they separated out from Israel every foreign person.
4 Vordem war der Priester Eljasib, der über unseres Gotteshauses Zellen gesetzt war, mit dem Tobia verwandt geworden.
Now before this Eliashib the priest was appointed over the storerooms of the house of our God. He was related to Tobiah.
5 Er richtete ihm eine große Zelle ein, in der man sonst das Speiseopfer, den Weihrauch und die anderen Sachen tat, sowie den Zehnten von Korn, Most und Öl, Pflichtteil für die Leviten, Sänger und Torhüter und die Gaben für die Priester.
Eliashib prepared for Tobiah a large storeroom, where previously they kept the grain offering, the incense, the articles, and the tithes of the grain, new wine, and the oil, which were designated for the Levites, the singers, the gatekeepers, and the contributions for the priests.
6 Ich bin während alldem nicht in Jerusalem gewesen. Denn im zweiunddreißigsten Jahre des Babelkönigs Artachsast war ich zum König gekommen. Nach einiger Zeit hatte ich mir aber vom König Urlaub genommen.
But in all this time I was not in Jerusalem. For in the thirty-second year of Artaxerxes king of Babylon I went to the king. After some time I asked the king for permission to leave,
7 Dann kam ich wieder nach Jerusalem. Dann merkte ich den Frevel, den Eljasib Tobia zulieb verübt hatte, daß er ihm eine Zelle in den Höfen des Gotteshauses eingeräumt hatte.
and I returned to Jerusalem. I understood the evil that Eliashib had done by giving Tobiah a storeroom in the courts of the house of God.
8 Dies empörte mich aufs tiefste. Und so warf ich alle Sachen aus dem Hause des Tobia, aus jener Zelle, auf die Straße.
I was very angry and I threw all Tobiah's household articles out of the storeroom.
9 Dann hieß ich die Zellen reinigen und brachte dorthin die Sachen aus dem Gotteshause, das Speiseopfer und den Weihrauch.
I ordered that they purify the storerooms, and I put back in them the articles of the house of God, the grain offerings, and the incense.
10 Auch erfuhr ich, daß die Gaben an die Leviten nicht abgeliefert worden waren und daß von den Leviten und den Sängern, die den Dienst besorgen sollten, jeder auf sein Landgut gelaufen war.
I learned that the Levites' portions had not been given to them, and they had run away, each to his own field, the Levites and the singers who did the work.
11 Da schalt ich die Vorsteher und sprach: "Warum ist das Gotteshaus vernachlässigt?" Dann holte ich sie zusammen und stellte sie auf ihre Posten.
So I confronted the officials and said, “Why is the house of God neglected?” I gathered them together and stationed them at their posts.
12 Nun brachte ganz Juda den Zehnten von Korn, Most und Öl in die Speicher.
Then all Judah brought in the tithe of the grain, the new wine, and the oil to the storerooms.
13 Dann setzte ich über die Speicher den Priester Selemja, den Schreiber Sadok und von den Leviten Pedaja und als ihren Helfer Chanan, Zakkurs Sohn, den Enkel des Mattanja. Denn sie galten als zuverlässig. Ihre Pflicht war es, für ihre Brüder zu teilen.
I appointed as treasurers over the storehouses Shelemiah the priest and Zadok the scribe, and from the Levites, Pedaiah. Next to them was Hanan son of Zaccur son of Mattaniah, for they were counted as trustworthy. Their duties were to distribute the supplies to their associates.
14 Gedenke mir dies, mein Gott, und lösche nicht meine guten Werke aus, die ich dem Hause meines Gottes und seinen Abteilungen getan habe!
Call me to mind, my God, concerning this, and do not wipe out the good deeds that I have done for the house of my God and its services.
15 In jenen Tagen hatte ich in Judäa Leute gesehen, die am Sabbat Kelter traten und Korn einfuhren, die Esel beluden und Wein, Trauben, Feigen und allerlei Ware am Sabbattage nach Jerusalem einführten. Ich warnte um des Tages willen, an dem sie die Lebensmittel feilboten.
In those days I saw in Judah people treading winepresses on the Sabbath and bringing in heaps of grain and loading them on donkeys, and also wine, grapes, figs, and all kinds of heavy loads, which they brought into Jerusalem on the Sabbath day. I protested that they were selling food on that day.
16 Die Fremden, die darin wohnten, führten Fische und sonstige Ware ein und verkauften sie am Sabbattag den Söhnen Judas zu Jerusalem.
Men from Tyre living in Jerusalem brought in fish and all kinds of goods, and they sold them on the Sabbath to the people of Judah and in the city!
17 Da schalt ich Judas Edle und sprach zu ihnen: "Welcher Frevel ist das, den ihr tut, daß ihr den Sabbattag entweiht?
Then I confronted the leaders of Judah, “What is this evil thing you are doing, profaning the Sabbath day?
18 Haben nicht also eure Väter getan? Da brachte unser Gott über uns und diese Stadt all dies Unheil. Wollt ihr über Israel noch mehr Zorn bringen, daß ihr den Sabbattag entweiht?"
Did not your fathers do this? Did not our God bring all this evil on us and on this city? Now you are bringing more wrath on Israel by profaning the Sabbath.”
19 Sobald nun vor dem Sabbat die Tore Jerusalems dunkelten, hieß ich die Tore schließen. Auch befahl ich, daß man sie vor Sabbatschluß nicht öffne. Ich stellte auch einige von meinen Knappen an die Tore, daß keine Ware am Sabbattag hereinkäme.
As soon as it became dark at the gates of Jerusalem before the Sabbath, I commanded that the doors be shut and that they should not be opened until after the Sabbath. I stationed some of my servants at the gates so no load could be brought in on the Sabbath day.
20 So übernachteten die Händler und die Verkäufer von allerhand Waren draußen vor Jerusalem, so ein-, zweimal.
The merchants and sellers of all kinds of wares camped outside Jerusalem once or twice.
21 Ich verwarnte sie und sprach zu ihnen: "Warum übernachtet ihr vor der Mauer? Tut ihr dies nochmals, dann lege ich Hand an euch." Von dieser Zeit an kamen sie nicht mehr am Sabbat.
But I warned them, “Why do you camp outside the wall? If you do so again, I will lay hands on you!” From that time on they did not come on the Sabbath.
22 Dann sagte ich den Leviten, sie sollten sich reinigen, hingehen und die Tore hüten, um den Sabbattag zu heiligen. Auch dies gedenke mir, mein Gott! Erbarm Dich meiner nach Deiner großen Huld!
Then I commanded the Levites to purify themselves, and come and guard the gates, to sanctify the Sabbath day. Call me to mind for this also, my God, and have mercy on me because of the covenant loyalty you have toward me.
23 An jenen Tagen sah ich nach den Judäern, die asdoditische, ammonitische und moabitische Weiber heimgeführt hatten.
In those days I also saw Jews that had married women of Ashdod, Ammon, and Moab.
24 Die Hälfte ihrer Kinder redete asdoditisch; aber jüdisch konnten sie nicht reden, sondern nur in der Sprache irgendeines Volkes.
Half of their children spoke the language of Ashdod. None of them could speak the language of Judah, but only the language of one of the other peoples.
25 Da schalt ich sie und fluchte ihnen. Einige von ihnen schlug ich und zerzauste sie. Bei Gott beschwor ich sie: "Gebt nicht eure Töchter ihren Söhnen und nicht von ihren Töchtern euren Söhnen und nehmt euch selbst nicht solche!
I confronted them, and I cursed them, and I hit some of them and pulled out their hair. I made them swear by God, saying, “You shall not give your daughters to their sons, or take their daughters for your sons, or for yourselves.
26 Hat nicht um solcher willen Salomo, Israels König, gesündigt? Obwohl unter den vielen Völkern kein König gewesen wie er und er seines Gottes Liebling gewesen ist, so daß ihn Gott zum König über ganz Israel machte, so haben ihn doch die fremden Weiber zur Sünde verführt.
Did not Solomon king of Israel sin on account of these women? Among many nations there was no king like him, and he was loved by his God, and God made him king over all Israel. Nevertheless, his foreign wives caused him to sin.
27 Ist es recht von euch, daß ihr all diesen großen Frevel tut und gegen unseren Gott untreu werdet durch Heimführung fremder Weiber?"
Should we then listen to you and do all this great evil, and act treacherously against our God by marrying foreign women?”
28 Von den Söhnen Jojadas, des Sohnes des Hohenpriesters Eljasib, war einer Schwiegersohn des Sanballat aus Choronaim. Ich jagte ihn von mir fort.
One of the sons of Joiada son of Eliashib the high priest was son-in-law to Sanballat the Horonite. Therefore I caused him to flee from my presence.
29 Gedenke es ihnen, mein Gott, wie sie das Priestertum befleckt haben, den Bund des Priestertums und der Leviten!
Call them to mind, my God, because they have defiled the priesthood, and the covenant of the priesthood and the Levites.
30 Von allem Fremden reinigte ich sie; dann bestellte ich die Posten der Priester und der Leviten, jeden für sein Amt.
Thus I cleansed them from everything foreign, and established the duties of the priests and the Levites, each to his own task.
31 Auch für die Holzspenden zu bestimmten Zeiten und für die Erstlingsfrüchte. Gedenke mir dies, mein Gott, rechne es mir zum Besten!
I provided for the wood offering at the appointed times and for the firstfruits. Call me to mind, my God, for good.
