17 Es sind demnach im ganzen von Abraham bis David 14 Geschlechter, von David bis zur babylonischen Gefangenschaft vierzehn Geschlechter, von der babylonischen Gefangenschaft bis auf Christus vierzehn Geschlechter.
There are therefore, in all, fourteen generations from Abraham to David; fourteen from David to the Removal to Babylon; and fourteen from the Removal to Babylon to the Christ.
18 Mit der Geburt Jesu Christi verhielt es sich also: Maria, seine Mutter, war mit Joseph verlobt. Da fand es sich, noch ehe sie zusammenwohnten, daß sie durch den Heiligen Geist empfangen hatte.
The circumstances of the birth of Jesus Christ were these. After his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they were united in marriage, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit.
19 Indes Joseph, ihr Mann, war rechtlich denkend und wollte sie nicht bloßstellen, und so gedachte er, sie im stillen zu entlassen.
But Joseph her husband, being a kind-hearted man and unwilling publicly to disgrace her, had determined to release her privately from the betrothal.
20 Noch trug er sich mit diesen Gedanken, siehe, da erschien ihm im Traum ein Engel des Herrn. Er sprach: "Joseph, Sohn Davids, trage kein Bedenken, Maria, dein Weib, zu dir ins Haus zu nehmen; denn, was in ihr erzeugt ist, stammt vom Heiligen Geist.
But while he was contemplating this step, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to bring home your wife Mary, for she is with child through the Holy Spirit.
21 Sie wird einen Sohn gebären, dem du den Namen Jesus geben sollst; denn dieser wird sein Volk von seinen Sünden retten".
She will give birth to a Son, and you are to call His name JESUS for He it is who will save His People from their sins."
22 Dies alles aber ist geschehen, damit erfüllt werde, was von dem Herrn durch den Propheten gesprochen ward, wenn er sagt:
All this took place in fulfilment of what the Lord had spoken through the Prophet,
23 "Siehe, die Jungfrau wird empfangen und einen Sohn gebären, und man wird ihn Emmanuel - d. h. 'Gott mit uns' - heißen".
"Mark! The maiden will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call His name Immanuel" --a word which signifies 'God with us'.
24 Joseph stand auf vom Schlaf und tat, wie ihm der Engel des Herrn geboten hatte; er nahm sein Weib zu sich ins Haus.
When Joseph awoke, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded, and brought home his wife,
25 Jedoch erkannte er sie nicht, bis sie ein Kind (das Erstgeborene) geboren hatte; und er gab ihm den Namen Jesus.
but did not live with her until she had given birth to a son. The child's name he called JESUS.
