Matthaeus 5
1 Als er die Scharen sah, ging er auf einen Berg. Dort setzte er sich nieder, und seine Jünger traten zu ihm.
On seeing the crowds of people, Jesus went up the hill; and, when he had taken his seat, his disciples came up to him;
2 Dann tat er seinen Mund auf, lehrte sie und sprach:
and he began to teach them, saying:
3 "Selig die Armen im Geiste; denn ihrer ist das Himmelreich.
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 Selig die Trauernden; denn sie werden getröstet werden.
Blessed are the mourners, for they will be comforted.
5 Selig die Sanftmütigen; denn sie werden das Land erhalten.
Blessed are the gentle, for they will inherit the earth.
6 Selig, die hungern und dürsten nach der Gerechtigkeit; denn sie werden gesättigt werden.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied.
7 Selig die Barmherzigen; denn sie werden Barmherzigkeit erlangen.
Blessed are the merciful, for they will find mercy.
8 Selig, die reinen Herzens sind; denn sie werden Gott schauen.
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
9 Selig die Friedensstifter; denn sie werden Söhne Gottes heißen.
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
10 Selig, die Verfolgung leiden der Gerechtigkeit zulieb; denn ihrer ist das Himmelreich.
Blessed are those who have been persecuted in the cause of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11 Selig seid ihr, wenn man euch schmäht und verfolgt und alles Schlechte in lügenhafter Weise wider euch aussagt um meinetwillen.
“Blessed are you when people insult you, and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil lies about you because of me.
12 Dann freuet euch und jubelt; denn groß ist euer Lohn in den Himmeln! So hat man schon vor euch die Propheten verfolgt
Be glad and rejoice, because your reward in heaven will be great; this is the way they persecuted the prophets who lived before you.
13 Ihr seid das Salz der Erde. Wenn aber das Salz fade wird, womit soll man es salzen? Es ist zu nichts mehr zu gebrauchen; man wirft es eben weg, und es wird von den Leuten zertreten.
“You are salt for the world. But if salt becomes tasteless, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, but is thrown away, and trampled underfoot.
14 Ihr seid das Licht der Welt: Eine Stadt, die oben auf dem Berge liegt, kann nicht verborgen bleiben.
It is you who are the light of the world. A town that stands on a hill cannot be hidden.
15 Auch zündet man kein Licht an und stellt es unter den Scheffel, sondern auf den Leuchter. Dann leuchtet es allen im Hause.
People do not light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lamp-stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house.
16 So leuchte euer Licht vor den Menschen, damit sie eure guten Werke sehen und euern Vater preisen, der in den Himmeln ist.
Let your light so shine before the eyes of others so that, seeing your good actions, they will praise your Father who is in heaven.
17 Denkt nicht, ich sei gekommen, das Gesetz oder die Propheten abzuschaffen. Ich komme nicht abzuschaffen, vielmehr zu vollenden.
“Do not think that I have come to do away with the Law or the prophets; I have not come to do away with them, but to complete them.
18 Wahrlich, ich sage euch: Eher werden Himmel und Erde untergehen, als daß auch nur ein Jota oder Strichlein vom Gesetz vergeht, bevor nicht alles geschehen ist.
For I tell you, until the heavens and the earth disappear, not even the smallest letter, nor one stroke of a letter, will disappear from the Law until all is done.
19 Jedoch, wenn einer eines dieser kleineren Gebote nicht beachtet und so die Menschen lehrt, der wird als der Geringste im Himmelreich gelten. Nur wer sie hält und halten lehrt, der wird als Großer im Himmelreich gelten.
Whoever, therefore, breaks one of these commandments, even the least of them, and teaches others to do so, will be the least esteemed in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever keeps them, and teaches others to do so, will be esteemed great in the kingdom of heaven.
20 Nein, ich sage euch: Wenn eure Gerechtigkeit nicht weitaus besser ist als die der Schriftgelehrten und Pharisäer, so kommt ihr überhaupt nicht in das Himmelreich hinein.
Indeed I tell you that, unless you obey God’s commands better than of the teachers of the Law, and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.
21 Ihr habt gehört, daß zu den Alten gesprochen ward: 'Du sollst nicht töten'; wer aber tötet, wird dem Gerichte verfallen.
“You have heard that to our ancestors it was said – ‘You must not commit murder,’ and ‘Whoever commits murder will be brought to trial.’
22 Ich aber sage euch: Wer seinem Bruder zürnt, wird dem Gerichte verfallen. Wer seinen Bruder 'Raka' schimpft, der wird dem Hohen Rate verfallen. Und wer ihn 'gottlos' heißt, verfällt der Feuerhölle. (Geenna g1067)
But I say to you that anyone who is angry at their brother or sister will be brought to trial; and whoever insults their brother or sister will be brought before the High Council, while whoever calls them a fool will be in danger of the fires of Gehenna. (Geenna g1067)
23 Wenn du zum Beispiel deine Gabe zum Altare bringst, und dort fällt es dir ein, daß dein Bruder etwas gegen dich habe,
Therefore, when presenting your gift at the altar, if even there you remember that your brother or sister has something against you,
24 dann laß deine Gabe dort vor dem Altare liegen, geh hin, versöhne dich zuvor mit deinem Bruder, und dann erst magst du deine Gabe opfern.
leave your gift there, before the altar, go and be reconciled to them, first, then come and present your gift.
25 Sei bereit, dich schnell mit deinem Gegner zu versöhnen, solange du mit ihm noch auf dem Wege bist. Es könnte sonst dein Gegner dich dem Richter übergeben, der Richter dem Kerkermeister, und du könntest in den Kerker geworfen werden.
Be ready to make friends with your opponent, even when you meet them on your way to the court; otherwise they might hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the judicial officer, and you will be thrown into prison.
26 Wahrlich, ich sage dir: Du kämest sicher nicht von da heraus, bevor du nicht den letzten Pfennig bezahlt hast.
I tell you, you will not come out until you have paid the last cent.
27 Ihr habt gehört, es ward gesagt: 'Du sollst nicht ehebrechen!'
“You have heard that it was said – ‘You must not commit adultery.’
28 Ich aber sage euch: Jeder, der ein Weib auch nur begehrlich ansieht, hat in seinem Herzen schon Ehebruch mit ihr begangen.
But I say to you that anyone who looks at a woman and desires her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
29 Gibt dir dein rechtes Auge zur Sünde Anlaß, so reiß es aus und wirf es weg. Denn besser ist's für dich, eines deiner Glieder gehe zugrunde, als daß dein ganzer Leib in die Hölle geworfen werde. (Geenna g1067)
If your right eye causes you to sin, take it out and throw it away. It would be best for you to lose one part of your body, and not to have the whole of it thrown into Gehenna. (Geenna g1067)
30 Gibt dir deine rechte Hand zur Sünde Anlaß, so haue sie ab und wirf sie weg. Denn besser ist's für dich, eines deiner Glieder gehe zugrunde, als daß dein ganzer Leib zur Hölle fahre. (Geenna g1067)
And, if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It would be best for you to lose one part of your body, and not to have the whole of it go down to Gehenna. (Geenna g1067)
31 Und weiter ward gesagt: 'Wer sein Weib entlassen will, der gebe ihr einen Scheidebrief!'
“It was also said – ‘Let anyone who divorces his wife serve her with a notice of separation.’
32 Ich aber sage euch: Jeder, der sein Weib entläßt -auch nicht im Falle des Ehebruchs- ist schuld, daß sie die Ehe bricht, und wer eine Entlassene heiratet, bricht die Ehe.
But I say to you that anyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of some serious sexual sin, leads to her committing adultery; while anyone who marries her after her divorce is guilty of adultery.
33 Und wieder habt ihr gehört, daß zu den Alten gesprochen ward: 'Du sollst keinen Meineid schwören'; 'Du sollst dem Herrn halten, was du geschworen hast.'
Again, you have heard that our ancestors were told – ‘Do not break your oaths, keep your vows to the Lord.’
34 Ich aber sage euch: Ihr sollt überhaupt nicht schwören, nicht bei dem Himmel; denn er ist der Thron Gottes,
But I say to you that you must not swear at all, either by heaven, since that is God’s throne,
35 Nicht bei der Erde; denn sie ist der Schemel seiner Füße, nicht bei Jerusalem; denn es ist die Stadt des großen Königs.
or by the earth, since that is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, since that is the city of the Great King.
36 Auch bei deinem Haupte sollst du nicht schwören; du kannst ja kein einziges Härchen weiß oder schwarz machen.
Nor should you swear by your head, since you cannot make a single hair either white or black.
37 Ein einfaches Ja, ein einfaches Nein sei eure Rede. Was darüber ist, stammt vom Bösen.
Let your words be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything beyond this comes from what is evil.
38 Ihr habt gehört, es ward gesagt: 'Aug` um Aug` und Zahn um Zahn.'
“You have heard that it was said – ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’
39 Ich aber sage euch: Leistet dem Bösen keinen Widerstand; vielmehr schlägt dich einer auf die rechte Wange, so halte ihm auch die andere hin.
But I say to you that you must not resist those who wrong you; but, if anyone strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other to them also.
40 Und wer dir vor Gericht den Rock abstreiten will, dem laß auch noch den Mantel.
If someone sues you for your shirt, let them have your cloak as well.
41 Wer dich zu einer Meile zwingt, mit dem geh zwei.
If you are forced to carry a soldier’s pack for one mile, carry it two.
42 Dem, der dich bittet, gib; wenn einer von dir borgen will, weise ihn nicht ab.
Give to anyone who asks and, if someone wants to borrow from you, do not turn them away.
43 Ihr habt gehört, es ward gesagt: 'Du sollst deinen Nächsten lieben'; doch hassen magst du deinen Feind.
You have heard that it was said – ‘You must love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’
44 Ich aber sage euch: Liebet eure Feinde tut Gutes denen, die euch hassen und betet für die, die euch verfolgen und verleumden,
But what I tell you is this: love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you,
45 auf daß ihr Kinder eures Vaters werdet, der in den Himmeln ist. Er läßt ja seine Sonne aufgehen über Böse und Gute und läßt regnen über Gerechte und Ungerechte.
so that you may become children of your Father who is in heaven; for he causes his sun to rise on bad and good alike, and sends rain on the righteous and on the unrighteous.
46 Denn wolltet ihr nur jene lieben, die euch lieben, auf welchen Lohn könnt ihr dann Anspruch machen? Handeln denn nicht auch die Zöllner ebenso?
For, if you love only those who love you, what reward will you have? Even the tax collectors do this!
47 Und wolltet ihr nur eure Brüder grüßen, was tut ihr da besonderes? Handeln denn nicht auch die Heiden ebenso?
And, if you only welcome your brothers and sisters, what are you doing more than others? Even the Gentiles do this!
48 Ihr aber sollt vollkommen sein, wie euer himmlischer Vater vollkommen ist."
You, then, must become perfect – as your heavenly Father is perfect.
