Maleachi 3

1 "Ich sende meinen Boten schon, um meinen Weg vor mir zu ebnen. Ganz unvermutet kommt der Herr in seinen Tempel. Er, den ihr vermißt. Dazu des Bundes Bote, dem ihr entgegenharrt. Er kommt", so spricht der Herr der Heerscharen.

Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall clear out the way before me: and suddenly will come to his temple the Lord, whom ye seek; and the messenger of the covenant, whom ye desire for, behold, he is coming, saith the Lord of hosts.

2 Wer hält ihn aus, den Tag, an dem er kommt? Wer kann bestehn, wenn er erscheint? Er gleicht dem Feuer eines Schmelzofens und gleicht der Wäscherlauge.

But who can sustain the day of his coming? and who can stand when he appeareth? for he is like the fire of the melter, and like the lye of the washers:

3 Und die sonst Silber läutert und es reinigt, wird jetzt die Levisöhne reinigen und läutern wie Gold und Silber. So hat der Herr nur solche, die Speiseopfer bringen in Gerechtigkeit.

And he will sit as a melter and purifier of silver; and he will purify the sons of Levi, and refine them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the Lord an offering in righteousness

4 Dem Herrn gefallen abermals die Speiseopfer Judas und Jerusalems wie einst in alten Tagen, in längst vergangenen Jahren.

And then shall be pleasant unto the Lord the offerings of Judah and Jerusalem, as in the days of old, and as in former years.

5 "Ich trete zum Gericht an euch heran; ein schneller Kläger werde ich für Mädchenjäger und für Ehebrecher und für die, die falsche Eide schwören und die entziehn dem Tagelöhner seinen Lohn, die Witwen, Waisen, Fremdlinge bedrücken und keine Ehrfurcht vor mir haben." So spricht der Herr der Heerscharen.

And I will come near unto you to [hold] judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against those that swear falsely, and against those that withhold the wages of the hired laborer, [oppress] the widow, and the fatherless, and that do injustice to the stranger, and fear me not, saith the Lord of hosts.

6 "Ja, ich, der Herr, ich habe niemals mich geändert, und ihr habt auch nicht aufgehört, des Jakobs Söhne immer noch zu sein.

For I the Lord, —I have not changed: and ye sons of Jacob—ye have not ceased to be.

7 Seit eurer Väter Tagen seid ihr von meinen Satzungen gewichen und habt sie nicht befolgt. Zu mir kehrt euch! Dann kehre ich mich auch zu euch." So spricht der Herr der Heerscharen. "Ihr fragt: 'Weswegen müssen wir umkehren?'

From the days of your fathers did ye depart from my statutes, and did not keep them; return unto me, and I will return unto you, saith the Lord of hosts; but ye say, Wherein shall we return?

8 Darf denn ein Mensch wohl Gott berauben, daß ihr mich selbst beraubt? Ihr fragt: 'Wie haben wir Dich nur beraubt?' In Zehnten und in Abgaben!

Can a man rob God, that ye will rob me? But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and in heave-offerings.

9 Bei der Verkürzung ziehet ihr nur selbst den kürzeren, und doch beraubt ihr mich, das ganze Volk.

With the curse are ye cursed, and yet me do ye rob, O ye entire nation!

10 Herbei mit allen Zehnten in das Vorratshaus, daß Zehrung sich in meinem Hause finde! Versucht's mit mir einmal auf diese Weise", so spricht der Herr der Heerscharen, "ob ich euch nicht des Himmels Fenster öffne und Segen über euch ergieße ohne Maß!

Bring ye all the tithes into the store-house, that there may be provision in my house, and prove me but herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open for you the windows of heaven, and pour out for you a blessing, until it be more than enough.

11 Der Freßheuschrecke wehre ich dann euretwegen, daß sie euch nicht des Bodens Frucht verderbe und daß der Weinstock auf dem Felde nicht zu eurem Schaden ohne Trauben bleibe." So spricht der Herr der Heerscharen.

And I will rebuke for you the devourer, and he shall not destroy for you the fruit of the ground: and the vine shall not cast its fruit for you before the time in the field, saith the Lord of hosts.

12 "Dann preisen euch die Heiden alle glücklich; ihr seid ja dann ein Land der Lust." So spricht der Herr der Heerscharen. -

And all the nations shall call you blessed; for ye shall be a land of delight, saith the Lord of hosts.

13 "Ihr nehmt euch viel in euren Reden wider mich heraus" So spricht der Herr: "Ihr fragt: 'Was reden wir denn gegen Dich?'

Your words have been strong against me, saith the Lord; but ye say, What have we spoken among us against thee?

14 Ihr sagt: 'Umsonst ist's, Gott zu dienen. Was haben wir davon, daß seine Satzung wir befolgen, daß wir in Trauer wandeln vor dem Herrn der Heerscharen?

Ye have said, It is vain to serve God: and what profit is it that we have kept his charge, and that we have walked contritely before the Lord of hosts?

15 Nun preisen wir Vermeßne glücklich. Nur Lasterhaften geht es gut; sie stellen auf die Probe Gott und kommen ungestraft davon.'"

And now we call the presumptuous happy: yea, built up are those that practise wickedness; yea, they have even tempted God and are [yet] suffered to escape.

16 Dagegen sprechen so des Herrn Verehrer unter sich: "Der Herr vernimmt es und behält es." In ein Gedächtnisbuch, das vor ihm liegt, wird eingeschrieben, was alle die betrifft, die vor dem Herrn sich fürchten und die vor seinem Namen Ehrfurcht haben.

Then conversed they that fear the Lord one with the other: and the Lord listened and heard it, and there was written a book of remembrance before him for those who fear the Lord, and for those who respect his name.

17 "Sie werden mir", so spricht der Herr der Heerscharen, "am Tage, da ich einschreite, zum ganz besonderen Eigentum. Mit ihnen habe ich so Mitleid, wie jemand Mitleid hat mit seinem Sohne, der ihm dient."

And they shall be mine, saith the Lord of hosts, on that day which I create as a special treasure: and I will spare them, as a man spareth his son that serveth him.

18 Aufs neue werdet ihr den Unterschied erkennen, der zwischen fromm und gottvergessen ist, und zwischen dem, der Gott verehrt, und dem, der ihn nicht ehrt.

And ye shall return, and see the difference between the righteous and the wicked, between him that serveth God and him that hath not served him.
