Josua 5

1 Sobald die Amoriterkönige alle jenseits des Jordan im Westen und alle Kanaaniter am Meere hörten, wie der Herr das Wasser des Jordan vor den Israeliten hatte vertrocknen lassen, bis sie hinüber waren, verzagte ihr Herz, und sie hatten keinen Mut mehr gegen die Israeliten.

And it happened, when all the kings of the Amorites, who were beyond the Jordan westward, and all the kings of the Canaanites, who were by the sea, heard how that Jehovah had dried up the waters of the Jordan from before the children of Israel, until they had passed over, that their heart melted, neither was there spirit in them any more, because of the children of Israel.

2 In jener Zeit gebot der Herr dem Josue: "Mach dir Steinmesser! Beschneide zum zweitenmal die Söhne Israels!"

At that time, Jehovah said to Joshua, "Make flint knives, and circumcise again the children of Israel the second time."

3 Da machte sich Josue Steinmesser und beschnitt die Israeliten wieder an der Spitze der Glieder.

Joshua made himself flint knives, and circumcised the children of Israel at the Hill of the Foreskins.

4 Dies war der Grund, weshalb Josue beschnitten hatte: Das ganze Volk, das aus Ägypten zog, die Männer, alle Kriegsleute, waren unterwegs in der Wüste gestorben nach ihrem Auszuge aus Ägypten.

This is the reason Joshua circumcised: all the people who came out of Egypt, who were males, even all the men of war, died in the wilderness by the way, after they came out of Egypt.

5 Denn das ganze Volk, das aus Ägypten auszog, war beschnitten gewesen. Dagegen hatte man niemand von dem Volke beschnitten, das nach dem Auszug aus Ägypten unterwegs in der Wüste geboren ward.

For all the people who came out were circumcised; but all the people who were born in the wilderness by the way as they came out of Egypt had not been circumcised.

6 Denn vierzig Jahre zogen die Israeliten in der Wüste umher, bis das ganze Geschlecht weggestorben war, die Kriegsleute, die aus Ägypten gezogen, aber des Herrn Weisung nicht gehorcht hatten und denen der Herr geschworen, daß er sie das Land nicht sehen lasse, das uns zu geben der Herr ihren Vätern zugeschworen, ein Land von Milch und Honig fließend.

For the children of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness, until all the nation, that is, the men of war who came out of Egypt, perished, because they did not listen to the voice of Jehovah, those to whom Jehovah swore that they would not see the land which Jehovah swore to their ancestors that he would give us, a land flowing with milk and honey.

7 Ihre Söhne aber hatte er an ihrer Statt aufkommen lassen, und sie hatte Josue beschnitten. Denn sie waren unbeschnitten gewesen, weil man sie unterwegs nicht beschnitten hatte.

And their children, whom he raised up in their place, were circumcised by Joshua; for they were uncircumcised, because they had not circumcised them on the way.

8 Als alles Volk zu Ende beschnitten war, blieben sie an ihrer Stelle im Lager bis zu ihrer Genesung.

And it happened, when they were done circumcising all the nation, that they stayed in their places in the camp until they were healed.

9 Und der Herr sprach zu Josue: "Heute habe ich Ägyptens Schande von euch gewälzt." Daher heißt der Ort Gilgal bis auf diesen Tag.

And Jehovah said to Joshua, "Today I have rolled away the disgrace of Egypt from off you." Therefore the name of that place was called Gilgal, to this day.

10 Die Israeliten lagerten im Gilgal, und sie hielten am vierzehnten Tage des Monats am Abend in Jerichos Steppe das Passah.

The children of Israel camped in Gilgal. They kept the Passover on the fourteenth day of the month at evening in the plains of Jericho.

11 Sie aßen am nächsten Tage nach dem Passah von den Früchten des Bodens, ungesäuerte Brote und geröstetes Korn noch am selben Tage.

They ate unleavened cakes and parched grain of the produce of the land on the next day after the Passover, in the same day.

12 Am nächsten Tage aber blieb das Manna aus, als sie von den Früchten des Bodens aßen. Für die Israeliten gab es kein Manna mehr. So aßen sie in jenem Jahr von dem Ertrag des Landes Kanaan.

The manna ceased on the next day, after they had eaten of the produce of the land. The children of Israel did not have manna any more; but they ate of the fruit of the land of Canaan that year.

13 Als aber Josue bei Jericho war, schaute er auf. Da sah er sich gegenüber einem Mann mit gezücktem Schwert in der Hand. Josue ging auf ihn zu und sprach zu ihm: "Bist du für uns oder für unsere Feinde?"

It happened, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and look, a man stood in front of him with his sword drawn in his hand. Joshua went to him, and said to him, "Are you for us, or for our adversaries?"

14 Er sprach: "Nein! Ich bin der Führer der Kriegsschar des Herrn. Eigens bin ich gekommen." Da fiel Josue auf sein Antlitz zur Erde, huldigte und fragte ihn. "Was hat mein Herr seinem Sklaven zu sagen?"

And he said to him, "Truly I am the commander of the army of Jehovah. Now I have come." And Joshua fell facedown to the ground and worshipped, and said to him, "What does my lord say to his servant?"

15 Da sprach der Anführer der Kriegsschar des Herrn zu Josue: "Zieh deine Schuhe aus! Denn heilig ist der Ort, worauf du stehst." Und Josue tat so.

The commander of the army of Jehovah said to Joshua, "Take your shoes off of your feet; for the place on which you stand is holy." Joshua did so.
