Josua 2

1 Und Josue, Nuns Sohn, sandte von Sittim heimlich zwei Männer aus als Kundschafter und sprach: "Geht! Beseht die Gegend, besonders Jericho!" Sie gingen und kamen zum Hause einer Wirtin namens Rachab. Hier kehrten sie ein.

And Joshua, the son of Nun, had sent out from Shittim two men as spies, secretly, saying, Go ye, view the land and especially Jericho; and they went, and came unto the house of a woman, a harlot, whose name was Rachab, and they lodged there.

2 Da ward dem König von Jericho gemeldet: "Heute nacht sind Männer von den Söhnen Israels hierher gekommen, das Land auszuspähen!"

And it was told unto the king of Jericho, saying, Behold, men came in hither this night, of the children of Israel, to search out the country.

3 Da sandte Jerichos König zu Rachab und ließ sagen: "Gib die Männer heraus, die zu dir gekommen und dein Haus betreten haben! Sie sind nur gekommen, die ganze Gegend auszuspähen."

And the king of Jericho sent to Rachab, saying, Bring forth the men who are come to thee, who came to thy house; for, to search out all the country are they come.

4 Das Weib aber nahm die beiden Männer und verbarg sie. Dann sprach sie: "Gewiß! Die Männer sind zu mir gekommen. Aber ich habe nicht gewußt, woher sie waren.

But the woman had taken the two men, and hidden them; and she said, It is true, the men came unto me, but I knew not whence they were.

5 Um die Zeit des Torschlusses, beim Dunkelwerden, sind die Männer fortgegangen. Ich weiß nicht, wohin die Männer gegangen sind. Jagt ihnen schnell nach! Dann könnt ihr sie einholen."

And it came to pass, about the time of shutting the gate, when it was dark, that the men went out; I know not whither the men are gone: pursue quickly after them, for ye can overtake them.

6 Sie hatte sie aber aufs Dach geführt und unter Flachsstengeln versteckt, die sie auf dem Dache ausgebreitet hatte.

But she had brought them up to the roof, and had hidden them among the stalks of flax, which she had laid in order upon the roof.

7 Die Männer aber jagten ihnen nach, dem Jordan zu, an die Furten. Das Tor schloß man zu, sobald ihre Verfolger draußen waren.

And the men pursued after them, by the way to the Jordan unto the fords; and the gate was closed, as soon as those who pursued after them were gone out.

8 Sie hatten sich aber noch nicht hingelegt, da kam sie zu ihnen auf das Dach

But they had not yet laid themselves down, when she came up unto them upon the roof.

9 und sprach zu den Männern: Ich weiß: Der Herr gibt euch das Land. Der Schrecken vor euch hat uns befallen, und alle Insassen des Landes zagen vor euch.

And she said unto them, I know that the Lord hath given you the land, and that the terror of you hath fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land are become faint-hearted, because of you.

10 Denn wir haben gehört, wie der Herr das Wasser des Schilfmeeres vor euch ausgetrocknet hat bei eurem Auszug aus Ägypten und was ihr den beiden Amoriterkönigen jenseits des Jordan getan, Sichon und Og, wie ihr sie gebannt habt.

For we have heard, how that the Lord dried up the waters of the Red Sea before you, when ye went forth out of Egypt; and what ye have done unto the two kings of the Emorites, who were on the other side of the Jordan, unto Sichon and 'Og, whom ye have utterly destroyed.

11 Wir hörten dies; da verzagte unser Herz, und in niemandem hat sich ein Mut wider euch geregt. Denn der Herr, euer Gott, ist droben im Himmel und auf Erden unten Gott.

And when we heard this, our heart melted, and there remained not any more courage in any man, because of you; for the Lord your God is alone God in the heavens above, and upon the earth beneath.

12 Und nun schwört mir beim Herrn, daß ihr auch dem Hause meines Vaters Gutes tun wollt, wie ich euch Gutes getan! Gebt mir ein Zeichen der Gewähr dafür,

And now swear, I pray you, unto me by the Lord, because I have shown you kindness, that ye will also, for your part, show kindness, unto my father's house; and give me a sure token,

13 daß ihr meinen Vater, meine Mutter, meine Brüder und Schwestern und all die Ihrigen leben lasset und unser Leben vom Tode rettet!"

That ye will preserve the life of my father, and my mother, and my brothers, and my sisters, and all that they have, and deliver our lives from death.

14 Da sprachen die Männer zu ihr: "Wir bürgen mit unserem eigenen Leben für das eurige, wenn ihr diese unsere Verabredung nicht verratet. Gibt uns der Herr das Land, dann wollen wir dir in Treue Gutes tun."

And the men said unto her, Our life shall be [doomed] to death instead of yours, if ye tell not this our business; and it shall be, when the Lord giveth us the land, that we will show thee kindness and truth.

15 Sie ließ sie darauf an einem Seil durchs Fenster hinab. Denn ihr Haus war in die Stadtmauer eingebaut, und so wohnte sie an der Stadtmauer.

Then she let them down by a cord through the window; for her house was within the town wall, and within the wall she dwelt.

16 Sie sprach zu ihnen: "Geht ins Gebirge, daß die Verfolger euch nicht treffen! Verbergt euch dort drei Tage, bis die Verfolger heimgekehrt sind! Dann geht eures Weges!"

And she said unto them, Get you to the mountain, lest the pursuers meet with you; and hide yourselves there three days, until the pursuers be returned; and afterward ye may go your way.

17 Da sprachen die Männer zu ihr: "Wir wollen frei von deinem Eidfluche bleiben, den du uns hast aussprechen lassen.

And the men said unto her, We will be blameless of this thy oath which thou hast caused us to swear.

18 Kommen wir in das Land, so sollst du die rote Tuchfahne hier an das Fenster knüpfen, durch das du uns heruntergelassen, und Vater, Mutter, Brüder und dein ganzes Vaterhaus zu dir ins Haus nehmen!

Behold, when we come into the land, this line of scarlet thread shalt thou bind in the window by which thou hast let us down; and thy father, and thy mother, and thy brothers, and all thy father's household, thou must bring together unto thee into the house.

19 Wer dann vor die Tür deines Hauses auf die Straße geht, dessen Blut fällt auf sein Haupt. Wir aber sind schuldfrei. Legt aber jemand Hand an irgendeinen, der bei dir im Hause ist, dann fällt sein Blut auf unser Haupt.

And it shall be, that whosoever will go out of the doors of thy house into the street, his blood shall be upon his head, and we will be guiltless; and whosoever will remain with thee in the house, his blood shall be on our head, if a hand be laid upon him.

20 Verrätst du aber unsere Verabredung, so sind wir deines Eidfluches frei, den du uns hast aussprechen lassen."

And if thou tell this our business, then will we be free of thy oath which thou hast caused us to swear.

21 Sie sprach: "So sei es, wie ihr sagt!" Sie entließ sie, und sie gingen weg. Sie aber band die rote Fahne an das Fenster.

And she said, According unto your words, so be it; and she dismissed them, and they departed; and she bound the scarlet line in the window.

22 Sie gingen nun weg und kamen ins Gebirge. Dort blieben sie drei Tage, bis die Verfolger zurück waren. Die Verfolger aber hatten den Weg überall abgesucht, aber sie nicht gefunden.

And they went, and came unto the mountain, and they remained there three days, until the pursuers were returned; and the pursuers sought throughout all the way, but found nothing.

23 Dann stiegen die beiden Männer wieder vom Gebirge herab, setzten über und kamen zu Josue, Nuns Sohn. Und sie erzählten ihm alles, was ihnen begegnet war.

And the two men returned, and descended from the mountain, and passed over, and came to Joshua the son of Nun, and related to him all the things that had befallen them.

24 Sie sprachen zu Josue: "Wahrhaftig! Der Herr gibt uns das ganze Land die Hand; denn alle Insassen des Landes haben Angst vor uns."

And they said unto Joshua, Truly the Lord hath given up into our hand all the country; for all the inhabitants of the country are already become faint-hearted because of us.
