Jona 4
1 Doch dies verdroß den Jonas schwer; er war entrüstet.
But this displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was very angry.
2 Er betete zum Herrn und sprach: "Ach, Herr, war das nicht mein Gedanke, als ich noch in meiner Heimat war? Deshalb floh ich zuvor nach Tarsis. Ich wußte wohl, daß Du ein Gott bist, gnädig und barmherzig, zum Zorne langsam, reich an Huld, der sich gereuen läßt des Unheils.
And he prayed to Jehovah and said, Ah! Jehovah, was not this what I said, when I was yet in my own country? Therefore I made haste to flee to Tarshish. For I knew that thou art a gracious and merciful God, slow to anger and abundant in mercy, and that thou repentest of a threatened evil.
3 Nun, Herr, nimm mir das Leben! Besser ist's für mich, zu sterben als zu leben."
And now, O Jehovah, take, I pray thee, my life from me! for it is better for me to die than to live.
4 Da sprach der Herr: "Bist du mit Recht erzürnt?"
And Jehovah said, Is it right that thou shouldst be angry?
5 Darauf ging Jonas aus der Stadt und ließ sich nieder, östlich von der Stadt. Er baute sich dort eine Hütte und wollte sich darunter in den Schatten setzen, bis daß er sähe, was mit der Stadt geschehe.
Now Jonah had gone out of the city, and had sat on the east side of the city, and had made himself a booth there, and had sat under it in the shade, till he should see what would become of the city.
6 Da ließ der Herr Gott einen Wunderbaum erstehen und ihn hoch über Jonas aufwachsen, um durch den Schatten, den er seinem Haupte spendete, ihn seiner üblen Laune zu entreißen. Und Jonas hatte große Freude an dem Wunderbaum.
And God, Jehovah, appointed a gourd; and it grew up over Jonah to be a shadow over his head, to deliver him from his distress. And Jonah was exceedingly glad of the gourd.
7 Die Gottheit aber ließ den Tag darauf zur Zeit der Morgendämmrung einen Wurm entstehen. Er stach den Wunderbaum, daß er verdorrte.
But God appointed a worm when the morning rose the next day, and it smote the gourd so that it withered.
8 Und als die Sonne aufgegangen war, bestellte Gott auch einen schwülen Ostwind. Da stach die Sonne Jonas auf das Haupt. So ward er ganz erschöpft und wünschte sich den Tod und sprach: "Zu sterben ist mir besser als zu leben."
And when the sun arose, God appointed a sultry east wind; and the sun beat upon the head of Jonah, and he was faint, and he asked for himself death, and said, It is better for me to die than to live.
9 Da sprach zu Jonas Gott: "Zürnst du des Wunderbaumes wegen?" Er sprach: "Mit Recht bin ich bis in den Tod erzürnt."
And God said to Jonah, Is it right that thou shouldst be angry for the gourd? And he said, It is right that I should be angry even to death.
10 Da sprach der Herr: "Dir ist es schade um den Wunderbaum, um den du dich nicht abgemüht, den du nicht großgezogen hast, der da in einer Nacht entstand und in der anderen Nacht verging.
And Jehovah said, Thou hast had pity on the gourd for which thou hast not labored, and which thou madest not to grow, which grew up in a night and perished in a night;
11 Mir aber sollte es um Ninive nicht leid sein, diese große Stadt, in der mehr als einhundertzwanzigtausend Menschen sind, die nicht die Linke von der Rechten unterscheiden, und eine Menge Vieh?"
and should not I spare Nineveh, the great city, wherein are more than a hundred and twenty thousand persons that cannot discern between their right hand and their left hand, and also many cattle?
