Jona 1

1 Das Wort des Herrn erging an Jonas, den Sohn des Amittaj:

The worde of the Lord came also vnto Ionah the sonne of Amittai, saying,

2 "Auf! Zieh nach Ninive, der großen Stadt, und predige, daß ihre Bosheit bis vor mich gedrungen."

Arise, and goe to Nineueh, that great citie, and crye against it: for their wickednesse is come vp before mee.

3 Doch Jonas machte sich daran, zu fliehen vor dem Herrn nach Tarsis. Er stieg deshalb hinab nach Joppe und traf ein Schiff, das fuhr nach Tarsis. Als er den Preis dafür entrichtet, stieg er ein, um vor dem Herrn mit ihnen nach Tarsis zu gelangen.

But Ionah rose vp to flee into Tarshish from the presence of the Lord, and went downe to Iapho: and he founde a ship going to Tarshish: so he payed the fare thereof, and went downe into it, that he might go with them vnto Tarshish, from the presence of the Lord.

4 Der Herr jedoch warf einen starken Wind aufs Meer, ein großer Sturm ward auf dem Meer, so daß das Schiff zu scheitern drohte.

But the Lord sent out a great winde into the sea, and there was a mightie tempest in the sea, so that the ship was like to be broken.

5 Die Schiffer wurden voller Angst; ein jeder schrie zu seinem Gott. Sie warfen das Gepäck ins Meer aus ihrem Schiff, es dadurch zu erleichtern. Doch Jonas war ins Unterteil des Schiffs hinabgestiegen und hatte dort sich hingelegt und war fest eingeschlafen.

Then the mariners were afraide, and cryed euery man vnto his God, and cast the wares that were in the ship, into the sea to lighten it of the: but Ionah was gone downe into the sides of the ship, and he lay downe, and was fast a sleepe.

6 Da trat der Schiffshauptmann zu ihm und sprach zu ihm: "Was fällt dir ein, zu schlafen? Erheb dich! Fleh zu deinem Gott! Vielleicht nimmt dieser Gott sich unser an, daß wir nicht untergehn."

So the shipmaster came to him, and saide vnto him, What meanest thou, O sleeper? Arise, call vpon thy God, if so be that God wil thinke vpon vs, that we perish not.

7 Sie sprachen alsdann zueinander: "Auf! Laßt uns auch die Lose werfen, damit wir es erfahren, durch wessen Schuld uns dieses Unheil trifft!" Da warfen sie die Lose. Das Los traf Jonas.

And they saide euery one to his fellowe, Come, and let vs cast lottes, that we may know, for whose cause this euill is vpon vs. So they cast lottes, and the lot fell vpon Ionah.

8 Da sprachen sie zu ihm: "Sag uns, weshalb uns dieses Unheil trifft! Was hast du für Geschäfte? Wo kommst du her? Was ist dein Vaterland? Von welchem Volke stammst du denn?"

Then said they vnto him, Tell vs for whose cause this euill is vpon vs? what is thine occupation? and whence commest thou? which is thy countrey? and of what people art thou?

9 Er sprach zu ihnen: "Ich bin Hebräer und verehre Gott, den Herrn des Himmels, der das Meer geschaffen und das feste Land."

And he answered them, I am an Ebrewe, and I feare the Lord God of heauen, which hath made the sea, and the dry lande.

10 Da überfiel die Leute große Angst; sie fragten ihn: "Was hast du denn getan?" Die Leute wußten nämlich schon, daß er in Furcht war vor dem Herrn, wie er es ihnen angedeutet.

Then were the men exceedingly afrayde, and said vnto him, Why hast thou done this? (for the men knewe, that he fled from the presence of the Lord, because he had tolde them)

11 Da sprachen sie zu ihm: "Was sollen wir jetzt mit dir tun, damit von uns das Meer ablasse?" Denn immer ärger tobte jetzt die See.

Then saide they vnto him, What shall we doe vnto thee, that the sea may be calme vnto vs? (for the sea wrought and was troublous)

12 Er sprach zu ihnen: "Nehmt und werft mich in das Meer! Dann läßt das Meer von euch. Ich weiß ja, daß nur meinetwegen dieser große Sturm euch überfiel."

And he said vnto them, Take me, and cast me into the sea: so shall the sea be calme vnto you: for I knowe that for my sake this great tempest is vpon you.

13 Da mühten sich die Leute ab, ans feste Land zurückzukommen. Doch sie vermochten's nicht; denn immer stärker tobte gegen sie die See.

Neuerthelesse, the men rowed to bring it to the lande, but they coulde not: for the sea wrought, and was troublous against them.

14 Da riefen sie zum Herrn und sprachen: "Herr, laß uns nicht zugrunde gehen um des Lebens dieses Mannes willen! Bring über uns nicht schuldlos Blut! Herr, tu, was Dir gefällt!"

Wherefore they cryed vnto the Lord, and said, We beseech thee, O Lord, we beseech thee, let vs not perish for this mans life, and lay not vpon vs innocent blood: for thou, O Lord, hast done, as it pleased thee.

15 Da nahmen sie den Jonas und warfen ihn ins Meer. Nun legte sich des Meeres Ungestüm.

So they tooke vp Ionah, and cast him into the sea, and the sea ceased from her raging.

16 So fürchteten sich diese Leute mächtig vor dem Herrn und brachten ihm Schlachtopfer dar und machten ihm Gelübde.

Then the men feared the Lord exceedingly, and offered a sacrifice vnto the Lord, and made vowes.

17 Der Herr ersah sich einen großen Fisch, den Jonas zu verschlingen. Und Jonas blieb drei Tage und drei Nächte im Leib des Fisches.

Nowe the Lord had prepared a great fish to swallowe vp Ionah: and Ionah was in the belly of the fish three dayes, and three nightes.
