Johannes 5

1 Hernach war ein Fest der Juden, und Jesus ging nach Jerusalem hinauf.

Sometime after this there was a Jewish Festival; and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

2 Am Schaftor zu Jerusalem befindet sich ein Teich, der auf hebräisch Bethesda heißt; er hat fünf Hallen.

There is in Jerusalem, near the sheep-gate, a bath with five colonnades around it. It is called in Hebrew ‘Bethesda.’

3 In diesen lag eine Menge Kranker: Blinde, Lahme und Schwindsüchtige, die warteten, bis das Wasser in Wallung kam.

In these colonnades a large number of sick people were lying – blind, lame, and crippled.

4 Stieg doch von Zeit zu Zeit ein Engel des Herrn in den Teich herab und ließ das Wasser aufwallen. Wer zuerst in dieses wallende Wasser stieg, ward gesund, an welchem Übel er auch leiden mochte.

5 Dort war ein Mann, der schon achtunddreißig Jahre lang an einer Krankheit litt.

One man who was there had been crippled for thirty-eight years.

6 Jesus sah ihn daliegen, und er erfuhr, daß er schon lange leide. Er fragte ihn: "Willst du gesund werden?"

Jesus saw the man lying there, and, finding that he had been in this state a long time, said to him, “Do you wish to be cured?”

7 Der Kranke sprach zu ihm: "O Herr, ich habe ja keinen Menschen, der mich in den Teich brächte, wenn das Wasser in Wallung kommt. Bis ich dann komme, steigt ein anderer schon vor mir hinein."

“I have no one, Sir,” the sick man answered, “to put me into the bath when there is a troubling of the water, and, while I am getting to it, someone else steps down before me.”

8 Und Jesus sprach zu ihm: "Steh auf, nimm dein Bett und geh umher!"

“Stand up,” said Jesus, “take up your mat, and walk.”

9 Und sogleich ward der Mann gesund; er nahm sein Bett und ging umher. Jener Tag war aber ein Sabbat.

The man was cured immediately, and took up his mat and began walking.

10 Die Juden sagten deshalb zum Geheilten: "Es ist Sabbat; du darfst dein Bett nicht tragen."

Now it was the Sabbath. So the religious authorities said to the man who had been cured, “This is the Sabbath; you must not carry your mat.”

11 Er aber sprach zu ihnen: "Der mich gesund gemacht hat, sprach zu mir: 'Nimm dein Bett und geh!'"

“The man who cured me,” he answered, “said to me ‘Take up your mat and walk.’”

12 Sie fragten ihn: "Wer ist der Mensch, der dir gesagt hat: 'Nimm dein Bett und geh umher?'"

“Who was it,” they asked, “that said to you ‘Take up your mat and walk’?”

13 Doch der Geheilte wußte nicht, wer es war; denn Jesus hatte sich entfernt, weil auf dem Platz ein Gedränge herrschte.

But the man who had been restored did not know who it was; for Jesus had moved away, because there was a crowd there.

14 Später traf ihn Jesus im Tempel und sprach zu ihm: "Siehe, du bist gesund geworden; sündige nun nicht mehr, damit dir nicht noch Schlimmeres widerfahre."

Afterward Jesus found the man in the Temple Courts, and said to him, “You are cured now; do not sin again, or something worse may happen to you.”

15 Da ging der Mann weg und sagte es den Juden, daß Jesus es sei, der ihn gesund gemacht habe.

The man went away, and told the authorities that it was Jesus who had cured him.

16 Die Juden verfolgten nun Jesus, weil er solches am Sabbat tat.

And that was why they began to persecute Jesus – because he did things of this kind on the Sabbath.

17 Doch Jesus sprach zu ihnen: "Mein Vater wirkt bis zur Stunde, und ich wirke auch."

But Jesus replied, “My Father works to this very hour, and I work also.”

18 Deshalb trachteten ihm die Juden noch mehr nach dem Leben, nicht nur weil er den Sabbat brach, sondern auch weil er Gott seinen Vater nannte und sich so Gott gleichstellte.

This made the authorities all the more eager to kill him, because not only was he doing away with the Sabbath, but he actually called God his own Father – putting himself on an equality with God.

19 Doch Jesus sprach zu ihnen: "Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch: Der Sohn kann nichts von sich aus tun, vielmehr nur das, was er den Vater wirken sieht. Was dieser tut, das tut auf gleiche Weise auch der Sohn.

So Jesus made this further reply, “In truth I tell you, the Son can do nothing of himself; he does only what he sees the Father doing; whatever the Father does, the Son does also.

20 Der Vater liebt den Sohn und zeigt ihm alles, was er tut, ja, noch größere Werke als diese wird er ihm zeigen, so daß ihr staunen werdet.

For the Father loves his Son, and shows him everything that he is doing; and he will show him still greater things – so that you will be filled with wonder.

21 Denn wie der Vater Tote auferweckt und lebendig macht, so macht auch der Sohn lebendig, wen er will.

For, just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whom he pleases.

22 Auch richtet der Vater niemand, vielmehr hat er das Gericht ganz dem Sohn überlassen,

The Father himself does not judge any one, but has entrusted the work of judging entirely to his Son,

23 damit alle den Sohn ehren, wie sie den Vater ehren. Wer den Sohn nicht ehrt, ehrt auch den Vater nicht, der ihn gesandt hat.

so that everyone may honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. The person who does not honour the Son fails to honour the Father who sent him.

24 Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch: Wer auf mein Wort hört und dem glaubt, der mich gesandt hat, hat ewiges Leben; er kommt nicht ins Gericht; vielmehr ist er bereits vom Tode zum Leben übergegangen. (aiōnios g166)

In truth I tell you that the person who listens to my message and believes him who sent me, has eternal life, and does not come under condemnation, but has already passed out of death into life. (aiōnios g166)

25 Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch: Die Stunde kommt, und sie ist jetzt da, in der die Toten die Stimme des Sohnes Gottes hören werden; und die sie hören, werden leben.

In truth I tell you that a time is coming, indeed it is already here, when the dead will listen to the voice of the Son of God, and when those who listen will live.

26 Denn wie der Vater in sich selber das Leben hat, so hat er auch dem Sohn verliehen, das Leben in sich selbst zu haben.

For, just as the Father has inherent life within him, so also he has granted to the Son to have inherent life within him;

27 Auch gab er ihm die Macht, Gericht zu halten; weil er Menschensohn ist.

and, because he is Son of Man, he has also given him authority to act as judge.

28 Wundert euch nicht darüber! Die Stunde kommt, da alle, die in den Gräbern ruhen, seine Stimme hören werden.

Do not wonder at this; for the time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice,

29 Die Gutes getan haben, werden auferstehen zur Auferstehung für das Leben, die Böses getan haben, zur Auferstehung der Verdammnis.

and will come out – those who have done good rising to life, and those who have lived evil lives rising for condemnation.

30 Aus mir selber kann ich nichts tun; ich richte, wie ich es höre; mein Urteil ist gerecht: ich suche ja nicht meinen Willen, sondern den Willen dessen, der mich gesandt, hat.

I can do nothing of myself; I judge as I am taught; and the judgment that I give is just, because my aim is not to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me.

31 Wenn ich für mich selber Zeugnis geben würde, so wäre mein Zeugnis nicht wahr.

“If I bear testimony to myself, my testimony is not trustworthy;

32 Ein anderer legt für mich Zeugnis ab; ich weiß aber, daß das Zeugnis, das er über mich ablegt, wahr ist

it is another who bears testimony to me, and I know that the testimony which he bears to me is trustworthy.

33 Ihr habt zu Johannes gesandt, und er hat für die Wahrheit Zeugnis abgelegt.

You have yourselves sent to John, and he has testified to the truth.

34 Ich aber brauche das Zeugnis eines Menschen nicht, sondern ich sage das nur, damit ihr Rettung findet.

But the testimony which I receive is not from people; I am saying this for your salvation.

35 Er war die Lampe, die hell brannte; ihr aber wolltet euch in ihrem Scheine nur eine Zeitlang ergötzen.

He was the Lamp that was burning and shining, and you were ready to rejoice, for a time, in his light.

36 Nein, ich habe ein Zeugnis, wertvoller als das des Johannes: die Werke, die mir der Vater übertragen hat, damit ich sie vollende; gerade sie, die Werke, die ich vollbringe, bezeugen es von mir, daß mich der Vater gesandt hat.

But the testimony which I have is of greater weight than John’s; for the work that the Father has given me to carry out – the work that I am doing – is in itself proof that the Father has sent me as his messenger.

37 Der Vater, der mich gesandt hat, ist es auch, der selber Zeugnis über mich gegeben hat. Ihr freilich habt seine Stimme nie gehört, seine Gestalt nie gesehen;

The Father who has sent me has himself borne testimony to me. You have neither listened to his voice, not seen his form;

38 sein Wort habt ihr nicht in euch bewahrt, weil ihr nicht an den glaubt, den er gesandt hat.

and you have not taken his message home to your hearts, because you do not believe him whom he sent as his messenger.

39 Ihr forscht in den Schriften, weil ihr glaubt, darin das ewige Leben zu besitzen; doch gerade diese legen Zeugnis von mir ab. (aiōnios g166)

You search the scriptures, because you think that you find in them immortal life; and, though it is those scriptures that bear testimony to me, (aiōnios g166)

40 Indes zu mir wollt ihr nicht kommen, um so das Leben zu haben.

you refuse to come to me to have life.

41 Mir ist es nicht darum zu tun, von Menschen Ehre zu empfangen.

“I do not receive honor from people,

42 Ich aber habe erkannt, daß ihr die Liebe Gottes nicht in euch habt.

but I know this of you, that you have not the love of God in your hearts.

43 Ich bin im Namen meines Vaters gekommen, und doch, ihr nehmt mich nicht auf. Kommt dann ein anderer in seinem eigenen Namen, den nehmt ihr auf.

I have come in my Father’s name, and you do not receive me; if another comes in his own name, you will receive him.

44 Wie könnt ihr zum Glauben kommen, da ihr auf Ehre voneinander bedacht seid und die Ehre vor dem einen Gott nicht sucht?

How can you believe in me, when you receive honor from one another and do not desire the honor which comes from the only God?

45 Glaubt nicht, daß ich euch beim Vater anklagen werde. Wer euch anklagt, ist Moses, auf den ihr eure Hoffnung gesetzt habt.

Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father; your accuser is Moses, on whom you have been resting your hopes.

46 Denn würdet ihr an Moses glauben, dann würdet ihr auch mir glauben; von mir hat er nämlich geschrieben.

For, had you believed Moses, you would have believed me, for it was of me that Moses wrote;

47 Wenn ihr nicht an seine Schriften glaubt, wie solltet ihr dann meinen Worten glauben?"

but, if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my teaching?”
