Job 9
1 Darauf gab Job zur Antwort:
Then Job answered and said,
2 "Wahrhaft, ich weiß, daß es so ist. Wie könnte gegen Gott ein Mensch obsiegen?
I know of a truth that it is so: for how shall a mortal man be just before the Lord?
3 Hat einer Lust, mit ihm zu streiten, gibt er auf tausend nicht ein Wort zu hören.
For if he would enter into judgement with him, [God] would not listen to him, so that he should answer to one of his charges of a thousand.
4 Ist einer noch so klug und stark, wer trotzte ihm und bliebe heil?
For he is wise in mind, and mighty, and great: who has hardened himself against him and endured?
5 Der Berge so versetzt, daß man nicht merkt, daß er im Zorn sie umgestürzt,
Who wears out the mountains, and [men] know it not: who overturns them in anger.
6 der zittern macht der Erde Bau, daß ihre Säulen wanken,
Who shakes the [earth] under heaven from its foundations, and its pillars totter.
7 der nicht mehr scheinen heißt die Sonne, und Sterne unter Siegel legt,
Who commands the sun, and it rises not; and he seals up the stars.
8 der ganz allein den Himmel spannte, auf Wolken schreitet,
Who alone has stretched out the heavens, and walks on the sea as on firm ground.
9 den Bären und Orion schuf, den Siebenstern, des Südens Kreuz,
Who makes Pleias, and Hesperus, and Arcturus, and the chambers of the south.
10 der groß und unerforschlich waltet und Wunder wirket ohne Zahl:
Who does great and unsearchable things; glorious also and excellent things, innumerable.
11 Er macht sich an mich her, bevor ich's sehe, dringt auf mich ein, eh ich's bemerke.
If ever he should go beyond me, I shall not see him: if he should pass by me, neither thus have I known [it].
12 Und packt er zu, wer hält ihn ab? Wer sagt zu ihm: 'Was tust du da?'
If he would take away, who shall turn him back? or who shall say to him, What have you done?
13 Wenn seinem Zorne Gott nicht wehrt, dann winden sich zu seinen Füßen selbst des Ungestüms Gehilfen.
For [if] he has turned away [his] anger, the whales under heaven have stooped under him.
14 Wie kann dann ich ihm Rede stehen, ihm gegenüber meine Worte wählen,
Oh then that he would listen to me, or judge my cause.
15 ich, der ich nicht Bescheid darf geben, mag ich im Recht auch sein, nein, meinen Richter noch anwinseln muß?
For though I be righteous, he will not listen to me: I will entreat his judgement.
16 Wenn ich ihn riefe, gäbe er mir Antwort? Ich glaub' es nicht, daß er auf meine Stimme hörte,
And if I should call and he should not listen, I can’t believe that he has listened to my voice.
17 er, der mich für ein Härchen packt, mir grundlos viele Wunden schlägt.
Let him not crush me with a dark storm: but he has made by bruises many without cause.
18 Er läßt mich nicht zu Atem kommen, weil er mit Bitterkeit mich sättigt.
For he suffers me not to take breath, but he has filled me with bitterness.
19 Wenn's auf die Kraft ankommt, dann ist er stark, und gilt es zu beweisen, wer zeugt für mich?
For indeed he is strong in power: who then shall resist his judgement?
20 Bin ich im Recht, dann zeiht mich doch sein Mund des Unrechts, bin ich unschuldig, stellt er mich doch als schuldig hin.
For though I should seem righteous, my mouth will be profane: and though I should seem blameless, I shall be proved perverse.
21 Und wüßte ich nicht selber, daß ich schuldlos bin, wegwürfe ich mein Leben.
For even if I have sinned, I know it not [in] my soul: but my life is taken away.
22 Nun ist es so; drum sage ich es offen. Er bringt den Frommen gleich dem Frevler um.
Therefore I said, Wrath slays the great and mighty man.
23 Die Geißel tötet blindlings; er lacht ob der Unschuldigen Verzweiflung.
For the worthless die, but the righteous are laughed to scorn.
24 Die Welt ist somit ausgeliefert in eines Ungerechten Hand, der seinen Strafgerichten das Gesicht verhüllt. Ist's dem nicht so, wie ist es dann?
For they are delivered into the hands of the unrighteous [man]: he covers the faces of the judges [of the earth]: but if it be not he, who is it?
25 Und meine Zeit läuft schneller als ein Läufer; sie flieht und sieht das Glück nicht mehr,
But my life is swifter than a post: [my days] have fled away, and they knew it not.
26 so flüchtig wie die Binsenschiffe, rasch wie der beutegierige Aar.
Or again, is there a trace of [their] path [left] by ships? or is there one of the flying eagle as it seeks [its] prey?
27 Nie kann ich sagen: 'Ich will mein Leid vergessen, mein Trauern lassen, heiter sein.'
And if I should say, I will forget to speak, I will bow down my face and groan;
28 Mir graut vor allen meinen Schmerzen; ich weiß: Du sprichst mich nimmer los.
I quake in all my limbs, for I know that you will not leave me alone [as] innocent.
29 Ich soll nun einmal schuldig sein. Wozu mich zwecklos mühen?
But since I am ungodly, why have I not died?
30 Und wüsche ich mich weiß wie Schnee und reinigte mit Lauge mir die Hände,
For if I should wash myself with snow, and purge myself with pure hands,
31 dann tauchtest Du mich um so tiefer in den Kot, daß meine Kleider selbst vor mir sich ekelten.
you had thoroughly plunged me in filth, and my garment had abhorred me.
32 Er ist kein Mensch wie ich, dem ich erwiderte: 'Gehn wir zusammen vor Gericht!'
For you are not man like me, with whom I could contend, that we might come together to judgement.
33 Wenn einen Schiedsmann zwischen uns es gäbe, der beide unter seine Aufsicht stellte,
Would that [he] our mediator were [present], and a reprover, and one who should hear [the cause] between both.
34 der seinen Stock von mir fernhielte; daß mich die Angst vor jenem nicht betäubte,
Let him remove [his] rod from me, and let not his fear terrify me:
35 dann wollt' ich furchtlos frei aussprechen, daß er - ich weiß es - gegen mich nicht ehrlich ist."
so shall I not be afraid, but I will speak: for I am not thus conscious [of guilt].
