Job 33
1 "Nun aber höre, Job, auf meine Rede! All meinen Worten leih' dein Ohr!
Hear therefore, O Job, my speeches, and hearken to all my words.
2 Ich öffne nunmehr meinen Mund; nach Kräften redet meine Zunge.
Behold now I have opened my mouth, let my tongue speak within my jaws.
3 Geradem Sinn entstammen meine Worte; was meine Lippen wissen, sprechen sie auch lauter aus.
My words are from my upright heart, and my lips shall speak a pure sentence.
4 Erschaffen hat mich Gottes Geist, und mich belebt der Odem des Allmächtigen.
The spirit of God made me, and the breath of the Almighty gave me life.
5 Kannst du's, so widerlege mich! Ja, rüste dich zum Kampfe gegen mich!
If thou canst, answer me, and stand up against my face.
6 Fürwahr, ich bin nach deiner Art, mit Gott verglichen; aus gleichem Ton wie du bin ich geschnitten.
Behold God hath made me as well as thee, and of the same clay I also was formed.
7 Nein, Furcht vor mir, die braucht dich nicht zu schrecken, und meine Wucht soll dich nicht niederdrücken.
But yet let not my wonder terrify thee, and let not my eloquence be burdensome to thee.
8 Allein vor meinen Ohren sagtest du; den Wortlaut hörte ich genau:
Now thou has said in my hearing, and I have heard the voice of thy words:
9 'Rein bin ich, ohne Missetat, und lauter bin ich, ohne Fehl.
I am clean, and without sin: I am unspotted, and there is no iniquity in me.
10 Wahrhaftig, er erfindet gegen mich nur Vorwände, erachtet mich für seinen Feind,
Because he hath found complaints against me, therefore he hath counted me for his enemy.
11 und meine Füße legt er in den Block und gibt auf alle meine Wege acht.'
He hath put my feet in the stocks, he hath observed all my paths.
12 Sieh, darin hast du unrecht und darin widerspreche ich dir auch; denn Gott ist größer als der Mensch.
Now this is the thing in which thou art not justified: I will answer thee, that God is greater than man.
13 Warum hast du mit ihm gehadert, weil er auf alle deine Worte keine Antwort gibt?
Dost thou strive against him, because he hath not answered thee to all words?
14 Denn Gott spricht auf die eine und die andere Weise; man faßt es nur nicht auf.
God speaketh once, and repeateth not the selfsame thing the second time.
15 Im Traume und im Nachtgesichte, wenn Tiefschlaf auf die Menschen fällt im Schlummer auf der Lagerstätte,
By a dream in a vision by night, when deep sleep falleth upon men, and they are sleeping in their beds:
16 dann öffnet er der Menschen Ohr und gibt so ihnen Zeichen,
Then he openeth the ears of men, and teaching instructeth them in what they are to learn.
17 um von der Tat den Menschen abzubringen und vor dem Übermut den Mann zu schützen,
That he may withdraw a man from the things he is doing, and may deliver him from pride.
18 auf daß er seine Seele vor der Finsternis bewahre, sein Leben vor dem Gang zur Unterwelt.
Rescuing his soul from corruption: and his life from passing to the sword.
19 Hernach wird er gezüchtiget durch Schmerz auf seinem Lager; in seinen Gliedern wütet immerfort ein Krampf.
He rebuketh also by sorrow in the bed, and he maketh all his bones to wither.
20 Sein Lebenstrieb macht ihm das Brot zum Ekel und seine Seele seine Lieblingsspeise.
Bread becometh abominable to him in his life, and to his soul the meat which before he desired.
21 Sein Fleisch vergeht; man kann es nimmer sehen. Sein dürr Gebein wird unscheinbar,
His flesh shall be consumed away, and his bones that were covered shall be made bare.
22 so daß dem Grab sich seine Seele nähert, den Würgern schon sein Leben.
His soul hath drawn near to corruption, and his life to the destroyers.
23 Wenn dann ein Fürsprechbote zu ihm tritt, so einer aus dem Freundeskreise, um einem das, was recht, zu melden,
If there shall be an angel speaking for him, one among thousands, to declare man’s uprightness,
24 und, seiner sich erbarmend, spricht: 'Erlöse ihn! Laß ihn doch nicht zur Grube fahren! Ich habe Dank empfangen',
He shall have mercy on him, and shall say: Deliver him, that he may not go down to corruption: I have found wherein I may be merciful to him.
25 dann strotzt sein Leib von Jugendfrische wieder und wird wie einst in seiner Jugendzeit.
His flesh is consumed with punishment, let him return to the days of his youth.
26 Er fleht zu Gott, und der erweist ihm Gnade und läßt sein Angesicht ihn unter Jauchzen schauen und gibt zurück dem Armen sein Verdienst.
He shall pray to God, and he will be gracious to him: and he shall see his face with joy, and he will render to man his justice.
27 Er singt den Leuten vor und spricht: 'Ich hatte schwer gesündigt, das Recht verkehrt; doch ward's mir nicht vergolten.
He shall look upon men, and shall say: I have sinned, and indeed I have offended, and I have not received what I have deserved.
28 Erlöst hat er jetzt meine Seele, auf daß sie nicht zur Grube fahre. Mein Leben freut sich noch am Tageslicht.'
He hath delivered his soul from going into destruction, that it may live and see the light.
29 Sieh, Gott tut dieses alles zwei-, dreimal mit einem Manne,
Behold, all these things God worketh three times within every one.
30 um seine Seele so der Grube zu entreißen, daß er des Lichtes der Lebendigen sich freue.
That he may withdraw their souls from corruption, and enlighten them with the light of the living.
31 Merk auf, Job! Hör mir zu! So schweige! Laß mich reden!
Attend, Job, and hearken to me: and hold thy peace, whilst I speak.
32 Hast du dann Gründe noch, so widerlege mich! Dann sprich! Ich gebe gern dir recht.
But if thou hast any thing to say, answer me, speak: for I would have thee to appear just.
33 Wo nicht, so hör mir zu und schweige, damit ich dich jetzt Weisheit lehre!"
And if thou have not, hear me: hold thy peace, and I will teach thee wisdom.
