Job 28
1 "Für Silber gibt es eine Fundstätte und einen Ort fürs Gold, das man hier sieht.
“Surely there is a mine for silver, and a place for gold which they refine.
2 Man holt auch Eisen aus der Erde, Gestein, das man zu Erz umschmilzt.
Iron is taken out of the earth, and copper is smelted out of the ore.
3 Am Ende denkt man an die Finsternis; mit aller Tüchtigkeit durchforscht man das Gestein im Dunkeln und im Finstern.
Man sets an end to darkness, and searches out, to the furthest bound, the stones of obscurity and of thick darkness.
4 Man läßt sich einen Schacht von fremdem Volke brechen, das so herabgekommen, daß sie nimmer Männer sind, zu tief gesunken, um noch Menschen gleichzustehen,
He breaks open a shaft away from where people live. They are forgotten by the foot. They hang far from men, they swing back and forth.
5 das hingezogen ist nach einem Lande, aus dem zwar Brotkorn sprießt, wo's unten aber wird durch Feuer umgewühlt,
As for the earth, out of it comes bread. Underneath it is turned up as it were by fire.
6 nach einem Orte, dessen Steine Saphir sind und der daneben Goldstaub liefert
Sapphires come from its rocks. It has dust of gold.
7 und dessen Zugang Adler selbst nicht kennen und den des Geiers Augen nicht erspähen,
That path no bird of prey knows, neither has the falcon’s eye seen it.
8 den nie die Raubtiere betreten und den der Löwe nie beschreitet.
The proud animals have not trodden it, nor has the fierce lion passed by there.
9 Man legt die Hand dort an das Felsgestein und wühlt von Grund die Berge um.
He puts his hand on the flinty rock, and he overturns the mountains by the roots.
10 Man schneidet Wasseradern in den Felsen an, und Kostbarkeiten aller Art erblickt das Auge.
He cuts out channels among the rocks. His eye sees every precious thing.
11 Der Ströme Quellen unterbindet man und bringt Verborgenes ans Licht.
He binds the streams that they don’t trickle. The thing that is hidden he brings out to light.
12 Wo aber findet man die Weisheit? Wo ist der Fundort der Erkenntnis?
“But where will wisdom be found? Where is the place of understanding?
13 Kein Mensch kennt ihren Preis; sie findet nimmer sich im Lande der Lebendigen.
Man doesn’t know its price, and it isn’t found in the land of the living.
14 Der Ozean erklärt: 'Ich hab sie nicht'; das Meer sagt: 'Ich besitz sie nimmer'.
The deep says, ‘It isn’t in me.’ The sea says, ‘It isn’t with me.’
15 Mit gutem Golde kann man sie nicht kaufen; nicht wird ihr Preis mit Silber dargewogen.
It can’t be gotten for gold, neither will silver be weighed for its price.
16 Sie läßt sich nicht mit Ophirgold aufwiegen; auch nicht mit Onyx und mit Saphirstein.
It can’t be valued with the gold of Ophir, with the precious onyx, or the sapphire.
17 Nicht kommen Gold und Glas ihr gleich; noch tauscht man sie für goldene Geräte,
Gold and glass can’t equal it, neither will it be exchanged for jewels of fine gold.
18 geschweige um Korallen und Kristall. Ein Sack voll Weisheit übertrifft den voller Perlen.
No mention will be made of coral or of crystal. Yes, the price of wisdom is above rubies.
19 Nicht kommen Äthiopiens Topase ihr gleich; mit reinstem Gold wird sie nicht aufgewogen.
The topaz of Ethiopia will not equal it. It won’t be valued with pure gold.
20 Woher nun also kommt die Weisheit? Wo ist der Fundort der Erkenntnis?
Where then does wisdom come from? Where is the place of understanding?
21 Verhüllt ist sie vorm Blicke aller Lebenden; des Himmels Vögeln selbst ist sie verborgen.
Seeing it is hidden from the eyes of all living, and kept close from the birds of the sky.
22 Es sprechen Tod und Totenreich: 'Wir haben nur von ihr gehört.'
Destruction and Death say, ‘We have heard a rumor of it with our ears.’
23 Den Weg zu ihr kennt Gott allein; um ihren Wohnort weiß nur er.
“God understands its way, and he knows its place.
24 Bis zu der Erde Grenzen schaut er hin; er sieht, was irgend unterm Himmel ist.
For he looks to the ends of the earth, and sees under the whole sky.
25 Als er des Windes Wucht abwog, sein Maß dem Wasser fest bestimmte,
He establishes the force of the wind. Yes, he measures out the waters by measure.
26 als er des Regens Zeit bestellte und einen Pfad dem Donnerrollen,
When he made a decree for the rain, and a way for the lightning of the thunder,
27 da sah er sie und warb sie an, nachdem er sie vor sich gestellt und sie durchmustert hatte.
then he saw it, and declared it. He established it, yes, and searched it out.
28 Er sprach zum Menschen: 'Die Furcht des Herrn ist Weisheit, und Böses meiden heißt: Verständigsein!'
To man he said, ‘Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom. To depart from evil is understanding.’”
