Job 22
1 Darauf erwidert Eliphaz von Teman mit den Worten:
And Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,
2 "Hat Gott von einem Manne Nutzen? Nein, nur zum eigenen Nutzen ist man fromm.
Can a man be profitable to God? surely it is unto himself that the wise man is profitable.
3 Hat der Allmächtige etwas von deiner Tugend, Gewinn von deiner Lauterkeit?
Is it any pleasure to the Almighty if thou art righteous? And is it gain [to him] that thou makest thy ways perfect?
4 Zeiht er dich etwa deiner Frömmigkeit und zieht dich deshalb vor Gericht?
Will he reason with thee for fear of thee? Will he enter with thee into judgment?
5 Kann nicht dein Frevel mannigfaltig sein und deine Sünden ohne Maß?
Is not thy wickedness great? and thine iniquities without end?
6 Gewiß hast du den Bruder ohne Grund gepfändet und Nackten ihre Kleider ausgezogen.
For thou hast taken a pledge of thy brother for nought, and stripped off the clothing of the naked.
7 Dem Müden hast du keinen Trunk gespendet und Hungrigen das Brot versagt.
Thou hast not given water to the fainting to drink, and thou hast withholden bread from the hungry.
8 'Dem Mann der Faust gehört das Land, und nur der Stolze darf drin wohnen', so dachtest du.
But the powerful man, he had the land; and the man of high rank dwelt in it.
9 So hast du Witwen hilflos ziehen lassen; die Waisen hat dein Arm bedrückt.
Widows hast thou sent empty away, and the arms of the fatherless have been broken.
10 Deshalb sind Schlingen rings um dich und ängstigt jählings dich der Schrecken.
Therefore snares are round about thee, and sudden fear troubleth thee;
11 Ist's nicht so, daß du gar nichts siehst, wenn Finsternis und Wasserwolken dich bedecken?
Or darkness, that thou canst not see, and floods of waters cover thee.
12 Nun, ist nicht Gott so hoch in Himmelshöhen? Schau nur empor, wie hoch der Sterne Haupt!
Is not God in the height of the heavens? And behold the summit of the stars: how exalted are they!
13 Da denkst du wohl: Wie kann denn Gott etwas bemerken? Kann er denn hinterm Wolkendunkel etwas unterscheiden?
And thou sayest, What doth God know? will he judge through the dark cloud?
14 Umschleiern ihn doch Wolken, daß er nichts sehen kann, und auch der Himmelskreis ist in Bewegung.'
Thick clouds are a covering to him, that he seeth not; and he walketh on the vault of the heavens.
15 Willst du denn von der Vorzeit Pfaden den betreten, den jene alten Sünder gingen?
Dost thou mark the ancient path which wicked men have trodden?
16 Sie, die gepackt zur Unzeit wurden, und deren Sein die Wasserflut verschlang,
Who were carried off before the time, whose foundation was overflowed with a flood;
17 die einst zu Gott gesprochen: 'Bleib uns fern!' - Was tat doch ihnen der Allmächtige?
Who said unto God, Depart from us! and what could the Almighty do to them?
18 Er, der mit Segen ihre Häuser füllte. Der Plan mit diesen Frevlern ist mir unbegreiflich. -
Yet he filled their houses with good. But the counsel of the wicked is far from me.
19 Die Frommen sehen es noch heut und freuen sich; der Schuldlose verspottet sie!
The righteous see it, and are glad; and the innocent laugh them to scorn:
20 'Ist unser Widersacher nicht vernichtet? Und seinen Rest verzehrte noch das Feuer.'
Is not he who rose against us destroyed, and doth not the fire consume his residue?
21 Vertrau allein auf ihn, so hast du Frieden! Durch jene wird dir reichlicher Gewinn.
Reconcile thyself now with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto thee.
22 Laß dich von seinem Mund belehren! Zu Herzen nimm dir seine Worte!
Receive, I pray thee, instruction from his mouth, and lay up his words in thy heart.
23 Wenn du gebessert zum Allmächtigen dich kehrst, entfernst aus deinem Zelte unrecht Gut,
If thou return to the Almighty, thou shalt be built up. If thou remove unrighteousness far from thy tents,
24 Golderz für Staub erachtend und für der Bäche Kiesel Ophirgold,
And put the precious ore with the dust, and [the gold of] Ophir among the stones of the torrents,
25 daß dir so der Allmächtige zum Goldberg wird, zu einem Silberhaufen,
Then the Almighty will be thy precious ore, and silver heaped up unto thee;
26 dann kannst du vorm Allmächtigen dich dem verwöhnten Kinde gleich gebärden und kannst dein Angesicht zu Gott erheben.
Yea, then shalt thou delight thyself in the Almighty, and shalt lift up thy face unto God:
27 Du bittest ihn, er hört auf dich; was du gelobt, kannst du erfüllen.
Thou shalt make thy prayer unto him, and he will hear thee, and thou shalt pay thy vows;
28 Was du dir vornimmst, wird dir glücken, und hell vor dir liegt deine Straße.
And thou shalt decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee; and light shall shine upon thy ways.
29 Wenn du in Demut Hochmut eingestanden, dann hilft er auch dem Demutsvollen.
When they are made low, then thou shalt say, Rise up! and he shall save him that is of downcast eyes.
30 So rettet er den Nichtschuldlosen; doch wird er nur gerettet durch deiner Hände Reinigung."
[Even] him that is not innocent shall he deliver; yea, he shall be delivered by the pureness of thy hands.
