Job 20
1 Da antwortete Sophar von Naama und sprach:
Then answered Zophar the Na'amathite, and said,
2 "Mich bringen die Gedanken wieder auf den gleichen Punkt; mein Eifer wählt in mir.
Even therefore do my inmost thoughts give me an answer, and for this reason do I feel a strong excitement within me.
3 Ich höre schmähliche Belehrung; mir antwortet ein Geist, für den ich kein Verständnis habe.
Reproof which casteth shame on me must I hear; yet out of my understanding will the spirit give me an answer.
4 Du weißt das nicht, daß schon von altersher, seit Menschen auf der Erde sind,
Dost thou know this? from the very beginning of things, from the very time when man was placed upon earth it was,
5 der Frevler Jubel gar nicht lange währt, die Freude des Verruchten höchstens einen Augenblick?
That the triumphal shouting of the wicked is ever of but a recent date, and the joy of the hypocrite endureth only for a moment.
6 Erhebt er sich bis in den Himmel und streckt sein Haupt bis in die Wolken,
Though his exaltation should mount up to the heavens, and his head should reach unto the clouds;
7 mit seinem Unterschlupf verschwindet er für alle Zeit. Die eben ihn gesehen, fragen, wo er sei.
Yet when he but turneth round will he vanish for ever; those who have seen him will say, Where is he?
8 Traumgleich zerfließt er, ohne Spuren, verschwindet wie ein Nachtgesicht.
Like a dream will he fly away, and men will find him no more; yea, he will be chased away like a vision of the night.
9 Das Auge, das ihn sah, wird ihn nicht wieder schauen, und seine Heimat sieht ihn nimmer.
If an eye have surveyed him, it will not do so again, and it will not behold him any more in his place.
10 Ersatz den Armen seine Kinder leisten; die eignen Hände liefern seine Kinder ab.
His children will suffer oppression from the indigent, and his hands will have to restore his [ill-gotten] wealth.
11 Er stand in voller Lebenskraft; nun muß sie mit ihm in den Staub.
[Now] his bones are full of his youthful vigor; but it will [suddenly] lie down with him in the dust.
12 Wenn ihm das Böse noch so süß im Munde schmeckt, und birgt er's unter seiner Zunge,
If the evil be sweet in his mouth, he will conceal it under his tongue;
13 und spart er's auf und läßt's nicht los, behält es recht in seinem Gaumen,
He will cherish it, and not forsake it; and hold it back within his palate;
14 dann ändert seine Speise sich in seinem Innern, wird Otterngift in seinem Leibe.
His food is thus changed within his bowels, and becometh the venom of asps within him.
15 Er speit das Gut, das er verschlang; aus seinem Leibe treibt es Gott. -
The wealth which he hath swallowed, will he have to vomit up again; God will drive it out of his belly.
16 Er saugt der Nattern Gift; der Viper Zunge tötet ihn. -
The poison of asps will he have to suck; the viper's tongue will slay him.
17 Er labt sich nicht an Strömen, an Bächen voll von Honig und von Milch.
He shall not look with pleasure on streams, on flowing brooks of honey and cream.
18 Er führt zwar sein Erworbenes zum Munde, verschluckt es aber nicht; so, wie's ihm sein Gewinn erlaubt, genießt er's nicht.
He restoreth what he hath labored for, and will not swallow it down; however much he may have obtained by toil, he will not have any joy of it.
19 Weil er der Armen Hütten eingerissen, so darf er nichts auf dem geraubten Baugrund bauen.
Because he oppressed and forsook the indigent; because he took violently away a house, shall he not rebuild it;
20 Er kannte nie für seinen Bauch Zufriedenheit; in seiner Lust bekam er nie genug.
Because he knew not quietness in his bosom, shall he not escape through what is the most precious to him.
21 Wen zu verzehren er sich vorgenommen, der ist ihm nicht entgangen; drum ist sein Wohlstand nicht von Dauer.
Nothing was spared from his craving to eat: therefore shall his wealth not prosper.
22 In vollem Glück befällt ihn Angst; was Elende an Leid bedrückt, kommt über ihn.
In the fulness of his abundance will distress assail him: every hand of [those he] troubled will come against him.
23 Wenn er sich anschickt, seinen Leib zu füllen, entsendet gegen ihn er seines Zornes Glut, und macht er sich ans Essen, beschießt er ihn von oben.
In order to fill his belly, [God] will send out against him the fury of his wrath, and will rain it upon him for his eating.
24 Vom eisernen Geschoß wird er durchbohrt; ihn trifft der eherne Bogen.
If he flee from the iron weapon, the brazen bow will strike him through.
25 Hinein dringt es und kommt heraus aus seinem Rücken. Ein Strahl von Galle fährt heraus; ein Schrecken lagert sich auf ihn.
He draweth it, and it cometh out of the body; yea, out of his gall the glittering [arrow] cometh forth: over him come the terrors [of death].
26 Den Seinigen, die er geborgen glaubt, ist alles Unheil aufgespart. Sie frißt ein Feuer, das von selber brennt. Wer noch in seinem Zelte übrig ist, dem geht es schlimm.
Entire darkness is laid by for his treasures: a fire not urged by blowing will consume him; it will destroy any one that is left in his tent.
27 Die Himmel offenbaren seine Schuld; die Erde selbst erhebt sich wider ihn.
The heavens will lay open his iniquity; and the earth will raise herself up against him.
28 Hinschwinden seines Hauses Einkünfte und Ausgaben an seinem Zornestag.
The product of his house will be banished, flowing away on the day of his wrath.
29 Das ist des Frevlers Los vor Gott, des Widerspenstigen Geschick vom Höchsten."
This is the portion of a wicked man from God, and his decreed heritage from God.
