Job 15
1 Darauf erwidert Eliphaz von Teman also:
And Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,
2 "Kann denn ein Weiser so unsinnige Beweise bringen und sich in solcher Hohlheit blähen?
Should a wise man answer with windy knowledge, and fill his belly with the east wind,
3 Kann er Beweis mit Reden führen, die nichts taugen, mit Sprüchen, die nichts nütze sind?
Reasoning with unprofitable talk, and with speeches which do no good?
4 Du machst die Gottesfurcht zunichte, zerstörst die Andacht vor der Gottheit,
Yea, thou makest piety of none effect, and restrainest meditation before God.
5 wenn deine Schuld dich lehrt, also zu reden, und du Verschmitzter Redeweise wählst.
For thy mouth uttereth thine iniquity, and thou hast chosen the tongue of the crafty.
6 Dein eigener Mund verdammt dich und nicht ich; die eigenen Lippen strafen dich.
Thine own mouth condemneth thee, and not I; and thy lips testify against thee.
7 Warst du als Erstlingsmensch geboren und kamst du vor den Hügeln auf die Welt,
Art thou the first man that was born? and wast thou brought forth before the hills?
8 und hörtest du im Rate Gottes zu und holtest Weisheit dir allein?
Hast thou listened in the secret council of God? And hast thou absorbed wisdom for thyself?
9 Was weißt du, und wir wüßten's nicht, verstehst, was unbekannt uns wäre?
What knowest thou that we know not? [what] understandest thou which is not in us?
10 Sind unter uns doch graue Häupter, mehr als betagt genug, um Vater dir zu sein.
Both the greyheaded and the aged are with us, older than thy father.
11 Ist dir die Gotteströstung zu gering, das Wort, das sanft an dich ergeht?
Are the consolations of God too small for thee? and the word gently spoken to thee?
12 Warum reißt dich ein Unmut fort? Was blicken deine Augen finster,
Why doth thy heart carry thee away? and why do thine eyes wink?
13 daß deinen Geist du Gott zurückzugeben trachtest? Nur mit dem Munde freilich hast du das gesagt.
That thou turnest thy spirit against God, and lettest words go out of thy mouth?
14 Was ist der Mensch, daß rein er wäre, gerecht der Weibgeborene?
What is man, that he should be pure? and he that is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?
15 Selbst seinen Heiligen traut er nicht; der Himmel ist nicht rein in seinen Augen,
Behold, he putteth no trust in his holy ones, and the heavens are not pure in his sight:
16 geschweige der Abscheuliche, Verdorbene, der Mensch, der Sünde wie das Wasser trinkt.
How much less the abominable and corrupt, — man, that drinketh unrighteousness like water!
17 Ich will dich lehren; hör mir zu. Was ich geschaut, will ich dir sagen,
I will shew thee, listen to me; and what I have seen I will declare;
18 was Weise einst verkündet, was ihre Väter ihnen nicht verhehlt,
Which wise men have told from their fathers, and have not hidden;
19 die noch allein im Lande saßen, zu denen noch kein Fremder kam.
Unto whom alone the earth was given, and no stranger passed among them.
20 Des Bösen Leben ist voll Angst; nur wenig Jahre sind für den Gewaltmenschen bestimmt.
All his days the wicked man is tormented, and numbered years are allotted to the violent.
21 Der Schrecken hallt in seinem Ohr; wiewohl in Sicherheit, wird er vom Räuber überfallen schon.
The sound of terrors is in his ears: in prosperity the destroyer cometh upon him.
22 Er gibt den Glauben auf, dem Dunkel zu entrinnen; er ist bestimmt für blutigen Tod
He believeth not that he shall return out of darkness, and he is singled out for the sword.
23 und wird ein Fraß der Geier. Er weiß, ihm ist ein finsterer Tag von ihm bestimmt.
He wandereth abroad for bread, — where may it be? He knoweth that the day of darkness is ready at his hand.
24 Ihn schreckt die Not; ihn überfällt die Drangsalszeit gleich einem kampfbereiten Hahn.
Distress and anguish make him afraid; they prevail against him, as a king ready for the battle.
25 Weil gegen Gott die Hand er ausgestreckt und dem Allmächtigen er Trotz geboten,
For he hath stretched out his hand against God, and strengthened himself against the Almighty:
26 so stürmt er gegen ihn, mit seines rauhen Schildes Wölbung.
He runneth against him, with [outstretched] neck, with the thick bosses of his bucklers;
27 Er deckt mit dem Visier sein Angesicht, legt einen Panzerschurz um seine Lenden.
For he hath covered his face with his fatness, and gathered fat upon [his] flanks.
28 Nur in verfemten Städten noch kann jener siedeln, in unbewohnbaren Gebäuden, die schon dem Abbruch sind verfallen.
And he dwelleth in desolate cities, in houses that no man inhabiteth, which are destined to become heaps.
29 Er wird nicht wieder reich, noch hat Bestand je seine Habe; er schlägt im Boden nimmer Wurzel.
He shall not become rich, neither shall his substance continue, and their possessions shall not extend upon the earth.
30 Der Finsternis entgeht er nicht, es dörrt die Hitze seine Zweige, und seine Blüten fallen durch den Sturmwind ab.
He shall not depart out of darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches; and by the breath of his mouth shall he go away.
31 Zu denen, die auf Nichtiges vertrauen, irrt er hin; sein Entgelt ist das Nichts.
Let him not trust in vanity: he is deceived, for vanity shall be his recompense;
32 Noch vor der Zeit verwelken sie, und seine Zweige grünen nimmer.
It shall be complete before his day, and his branch shall not be green.
33 Er wirft gleich einem Weinstock seine Früchte ab, wirft wie der Ölbaum seine Blüte hin.
He shall shake off his unripe grapes as a vine, and shall cast his flower as an olive.
34 Des Frevlers Rotte ist ja unfruchtbar, und Feuer frißt des Unrechts Zelte.
For the family of the ungodly shall be barren, and fire shall consume the tents of bribery.
35 Sie brüten Unheil, hecken Ungemach, und ihres Leibes Frucht ist Trug."
They conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity, and their belly prepareth deceit.
