1 Mose 44

1 Hierauf gebot er seinem Hausverwalter: "Fülle die Säcke der Männer mit Korn, soviel sie tragen können, und leg eines jeden Geld oben in seinen Sack!

And Joseph charged the steward of his house, saying, Fill the men's sacks with food, as much as they can carry, and put the money of each in the mouth of his sack.

2 Und meinen silbernen Becher leg oben in den Sack des jüngsten samt dem Geld für sein Getreide!" Er tat so, wie Joseph gesagt.

And put my silver cup into the sack of the youngest, and the price of his corn. And it was done according to the word of Joseph, as he said.

3 Als der Morgen anbrach, entließ man die Männer mit ihren Eseln.

The morning dawned, and the men were sent away, they and their asses.

4 Eben waren sie zur Stadt hinausgegangen, noch nicht weit, da sprach Joseph zu seinem Hausverwalter: "Auf! Jag den Männern nach! Holst du sie ein, dann sprich zu ihnen: 'Warum vergeltet ihr Gutes mit Bösem?

And when they had gone out of the city, [and] were not far off, then Joseph said to his steward, Arise, and pursue after the men; and thou shalt overtake them, and say to them, Why have ye returned evil for good?

5 Ist es nicht der Becher, aus dem mein Herr trinkt und weissagt? Ihr habt übel daran getan, daß ihr so gehandelt.'"

Why have ye stolen my silver cup? is it not this out of which my lord drinks? and he divines augury with it; ye have accomplished evil in that which ye have done.

6 Er holte sie ein und redete also zu ihnen.

And he found them, and spoke to them according to these words.

7 Sie sprachen zu ihm: "Warum spricht mein Herr solcherlei? Ferne sei es deinen Sklaven, so etwas zu tun!

And they said to him, Why does our lord speak according to these words? far be it from thy servants to do according to this word.

8 Haben wir doch das Geld, das wir in unseren Säcken oben fanden, dir aus dem Lande Kanaan zurückgebracht. Wie sollten wir aus deines Herren Haus Silber oder Gold stehlen?

If we brought back to thee out of the land of Chanaan the money which we found in our sacks, how should we steal silver or gold out of the house of thy lord?

9 Bei wem von deinen Sklaven er sich findet, der soll sterben! Wir anderen wollen meinem Herrn leibeigen sein!"

With whomsoever of thy servants thou shalt find the cup, let him die; and, moreover, we will be servants to our lord.

10 Da sprach er: "So sollte es eigentlich sein, wie ihr sagt. Doch soll nur der, bei dem er sich findet, mir leibeigen sein; ihr anderen aber geht frei aus."

And he said, Now then it shall be as ye say; with whomsoever the cup shall be found, he shall be my servant, and ye shall be clear.

11 Da ließ jeder eilends seinen Sack zur Erde und öffnete seinen Sack.

And they hasted, and took down every man his sack on the ground, and they opened every man his sack.

12 Er aber fing zu suchen an. Beim Ältesten hatte er angefangen und endete beim jüngsten. Da fand sich der Becher in Benjamins Sack.

And he searched, beginning from the eldest, until he came to the youngest; and he found the cup in Benjamin's sack.

13 Darauf zerrissen sie ihre Kleider, beluden jeder seinen Esel und kehrten in die Stadt zurück.

And they rent their garments, and laid each man his sack on his ass, and returned to the city.

14 So kam Juda mit seinen Brüdern in Josephs Haus; dieser aber war noch dort, und sie fielen vor ihm zu Boden.

And Judas and his brethren came in to Joseph, while he was yet there, and fell on the ground before him.

15 Joseph aber sprach zu ihnen: "Was ist das für eine Tat, die ihr getan? Habt ihr nicht gewußt, daß ein Mann wie ich richtig ahnen kann?"

And Joseph said to them, What is this thing that ye have done? know ye not that a man such as I can surely divine?

16 Da sprach Juda: "Was sollen wir meinem Herrn sagen? Was reden? Wie uns rechtfertigen? Gott hat die Schuld deiner Sklaven gefunden. Wir sind jetzt Sklaven unseres Herrn, wir so gut wie der, bei dem sich der Becher gefunden hat."

And Judas said, What shall we answer to our lord, or what shall we say, or wherein should we be justified? whereas God has discovered the unrighteousness of thy servants; behold, we are slaves to our lord, both we and he with whom the cup has been found.

17 Er sprach: "Ferne sei es nur, das zu tun! Der Mann, bei dem sich der Becher gefunden hat, soll allein mir leibeigen sein. Ihr anderen aber zieht in Frieden zu eurem Vater!"

And Joseph said, Far be it from me to do this thing; the man with whom the cup has been found, he shall be my servant; but do ye go up with safety to your father.

18 Da trat Juda zu ihm und sprach: "Bitte, mein Herr! Möchte dein Sklave ein Wort an meinen Herrn richten dürfen, ohne daß dein Zorn gegen deinen Sklaven entbrenne! Du bist ja wie Pharao.

And Judas drew near him, and said, I pray, Sir, let thy servant speak a word before thee, and be not angry with thy servant, for thou art next to Pharao.

19 Mein Herr hat seine Sklaven gefragt: 'Habt ihr noch einen Vater oder einen Bruder?'

Sir, thou askedst thy servants, saying, Have ye a father or a brother?

20 Da sagten wir zu meinem Herrn: 'Wir haben noch einen alten Vater. Ein kleiner, spätgeborener Sohn ist auch da. Sein Bruder aber ist tot, und so ist er allein von seiner Mutter übrig und ist seines Vaters Liebling.'

And we said to [my] lord, We have a father, an old man, and he has a son of his old age, a young one, and his brother is dead, and he alone has been left behind to his mother, and his father loves him.

21 Du sprachst zu deinen Sklaven: 'Bringt ihn zu mir herab, damit ich ihn mit eigenen Augen sehe!'

And thou saidst to they servants, Bring him down to me, and I will take care of him.

22 Da sprachen wir zu meinem Herrn: 'Der Knabe kann seinen Vater nicht verlassen; denn verließe er seinen Vater, so stürbe dieser.'

And we said to [my] lord, The child will not be able to leave his father; but if he should leave his father, he will die.

23 Du aber sprachest zu deinen Sklaven: 'Kommt euer jüngster Bruder nicht mit euch herab, dann dürft ihr nimmermehr mein Antlitz schauen.'

But thou saidst to they servants, Except your younger brother come down with you, ye shall not see my face again.

24 Als wir zu deinem Sklaven, unserem Vater, hinaufgezogen, berichteten wir ihm meines Herrn Wort.

And it came to pass, when we went up to thy servant our father, we reported to him the words of our lord.

25 Da sprach unser Vater: 'Kauft uns nochmals etwas Korn.'

And our father said, Go again, and buy us a little food.

26 Da sagten wir: 'Wir können nicht hinabziehen; nur wenn unser jüngster Bruder mit uns geht, ziehen wir hinab. Wir dürfen ja dem Manne nicht mehr unter die Augen kommen, ist unser jüngster Bruder nicht bei uns.'

And we said, We shall not be able to go down; but if our younger brother go down with us, we will go down; for we shall not be able to see the man's face, our younger brother not being with us.

27 Da sprach zu uns dein Sklave, mein Vater: 'Ihr wißt: Mein Weib hat mir zwei Söhne geboren.

And thy servant our father said to us, Ye know that my wife bore me two [sons];

28 Der eine ist von mir gegangen. Ich sagte mir: Sicherlich ist er zerrissen worden. Bis heute habe ich ihn nicht mehr gesehen.

and one is departed from me; and ye said that he was devoured of wild beasts, and I have not seen him until now.

29 Nehmt ihr mir auch diesen weg und träfe ihn ein Leid, dann senktet ihr mein graues Haar im Leid zur Unterwelt.' (Sheol h7585)

If then ye take this one also from my presence, and an affliction happen to him by the way, then shall ye bring down my old age with sorrow to the grave. (Sheol h7585)

30 Und nun, komme ich zu deinem Sklaven, meinem Vater, und ist der Knabe nicht bei uns, an dem seine Seele hängt,

Now then, if I should go in to they servant, and our father, and the boy should not be with us, (and his life depends on this [lad's] life)

31 dann stürbe er, sobald er sieht, der Knabe ist nicht mehr da, und deine Sklaven senkten deines Sklaven, unseres Vaters, graues Haar in Jammer zur Unterwelt. (Sheol h7585)

—it shall even come to pass, when he sees the boy is not with us, [that] he will die, and thy servants will bring down the old age of thy servant, and our father, with sorrow to the grave. (Sheol h7585)

32 Weil sich dein Sklave für den Knaben meinem Vater so verbürgt hat: 'Wenn ich ihn dir nicht bringe, dann will ich lebenslang vor meinem Vater schuldig sein',

For thy servant has received the boy [in charge] from his father, saying, If I bring him not to thee, and place him before thee, I shall be guilty towards my father for ever.

33 so möchte dein Sklave an des Knaben Statt bleiben, als meines Herren Leibeigener! Der Knabe aber ziehe mit seinen Brüdern hinauf.

Now then I will remain a servant with thee instead of the lad, a domestic of my lord; but let the lad go up with his brethren.

34 Wie könnte ich zu meinem Vater ziehen ohne den Knaben bei mir? Nie könnte ich das Leid ansehen, das meinen Vater überkäme."

For how shall I go up to my father, the lad not being with us? lest I behold the evils which will befall my father.
