1 Mose 20

1 Und Abraham zog von dort ins Gebiet des Südlands und wohnte zwischen Kades und Schur. Als er einst zu Gerar weilte,

Now Abraham journeyed from there to the region of the Negev and settled between Kadesh and Shur. While he was staying in Gerar,

2 sprach Abraham von seinem Weibe Sara: "Sie ist meine Schwester." Da sandte der König von Gerar, Abimelech, hin und ließ Sara holen.

Abraham said of his wife Sarah, “She is my sister.” So Abimelech king of Gerar had Sarah brought to him.

3 Gott aber kam im nächtlichen Traume zu Abimelech und sprach zu ihm: "Des Weibes wegen, das du geholt, mußt du sterben, ist sie doch eine Ehefrau."

One night, however, God came to Abimelech in a dream and told him, “You are as good as dead because of the woman you have taken, for she is a married woman.”

4 Abimelech aber war ihr noch nicht genaht; so sprach er: "Herr, bringst du auch schuldlose Leute um?

Now Abimelech had not gone near her, so he replied, “Lord, would You destroy a nation even though it is innocent?

5 Er hat doch selbst zu mir gesagt: 'Sie ist meine Schwester' und auch sie hat gesagt: 'Er ist mein Bruder.' In meines Herzens Einfalt und mit reinen Händen habe ich das getan."

Didn’t Abraham tell me, ‘She is my sister’? And she herself said, ‘He is my brother.’ I have done this in the integrity of my heart and the innocence of my hands.”

6 Da sprach Gott zu ihm im Traume: "Auch ich weiß, daß du in deines Herzens Einfalt so gehandelt, und so bewahrte ich selbst dich davor, gegen mich zu sündigen; darum habe ich dir nicht zugelassen, sie zu berühren.

Then God said to Abimelech in the dream, “Yes, I know that you did this with a clear conscience, and so I have kept you from sinning against Me. That is why I did not let you touch her.

7 Gib aber jetzt dem Manne sein Weib heraus! Weil er ein Prophet ist, soll er für dich beten, daß du am Leben bleibst. Gibst du sie aber nicht heraus, so wisse, daß du sterben mußt, du samt all den Deinen!"

Now return the man’s wife, for he is a prophet; he will pray for you and you will live. But if you do not restore her, be aware that you will surely die—you and all who belong to you.”

8 Da rief frühmorgens Abimelech alle seine Diener zusammen und erzählte ihnen all das, und die Männer erschraken sehr.

Early the next morning Abimelech got up and summoned all his servants; and when he described to them all that had happened, the men were terrified.

9 Dann ließ Abimelech Abraham rufen und sprach zu ihm: "Was hast du uns angetan? Womit habe ich gegen dich gefehlt, daß du so schwere Schuld über mich und über mein Gebiet gebracht hast? Was nimmermehr geschehen durfte, hast du mir angetan."

Then Abimelech called Abraham and asked, “What have you done to us? How have I sinned against you, that you have brought such tremendous guilt upon me and my kingdom? You have done things to me that should not be done.”

10 Dann sprach Abimelech zu Abraham: "Was ist dir eingefallen, daß du dies getan hast?"

Abimelech also asked Abraham, “What prompted you to do such a thing?”

11 Da sprach Abraham: "Ich habe eben gedacht: 'Gar keine Furcht vor Gott herrscht an diesem Ort; sie bringen mich meines Weibes wegen um.'

Abraham replied, “I thought to myself, ‘Surely there is no fear of God in this place. They will kill me on account of my wife.’

12 Auch ist sie wirklich meine Schwester, meines Vaters Tochter, nur nicht meiner Mutter Tochter, und so ist sie mein Weib geworden.

Besides, she really is my sister, the daughter of my father—though not the daughter of my mother—and she became my wife.

13 Als mich die Himmlischen aus meines Vaters Hause auf die Irrfahrt schickten, sprach ich zu ihr. 'Tu mir dies zuliebe! Wohin wir kommen, sag von mir: Es ist mein Bruder.'"

So when God had me journey from my father’s house, I said to Sarah, ‘This is how you can show your loyalty to me: Wherever we go, say of me, “He is my brother.”’”

14 Da nahm Abimelech Schafe und Rinder, Sklaven und Mägde und gab sie Abraham; auch gab er ihm sein Weib Sara heraus.

So Abimelech brought sheep and cattle, menservants and maidservants, and he gave them to Abraham and restored his wife Sarah to him.

15 Und Abimelech sprach: "Mein Land steht dir offen. Laß dich nieder, wo es dir beliebt!"

And Abimelech said, “Look, my land is before you. Settle wherever you please.”

16 Zu Sara aber sprach er: "Ich schenke deinem Bruder tausend Silberstücke. Dies sei dir Ersatz für alles, was dir, deinen Knechten und Mägden widerfahren ist."

And he said to Sarah, “See, I am giving your brother a thousand pieces of silver. It is your vindication before all who are with you; you are completely cleared.”

17 Abraham aber betete zu Gott, und Gott heilte Abimelech, sein Weib und seine Mägde, daß sie Geburten hatten;

Then Abraham prayed to God, and God healed Abimelech and his wife and his maidservants, so that they could again bear children—

18 denn der Herr hatte jeden Schoß in Abimelechs Hause wegen Sara, des Weibes Abrahams, verschlossen.

for on account of Abraham’s wife Sarah, the LORD had completely closed all the wombs in Abimelech’s household.
