Galater 5
1 Für die Freiheit hat Christus uns befreit. So steht denn fest und laßt euch nicht wieder das Joch der Sklaverei aufbürden.
It is for freedom that Christ set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not again be held under the yoke of slavery.
2 Seht! Ich, Paulus, sage euch: Wenn ihr euch beschneiden laßt, dann nützt euch Christus nichts.
Understand that I, Paul, myself tell you that if you allow yourselves to be circumcised, Christ will avail you nothing.
3 Und noch einmal versichere ich jedem, der sich beschneiden läßt: Er ist dann verpflichtet, das ganze Gesetz zu halten.
I again declare to everyone who receives circumcision, that he binds himself to obey the whole Law.
4 Ihr seid von Christus losgetrennt, wenn ihr euch durch das Gesetz Rechtfertigung zu verschaffen sucht; ihr geht dann der Gnade verlustig.
You have severed yourselves from Christ – you who are seeking to be pronounced righteous through Law; you have fallen away from love.
5 Denn wir erwarten die Rechtfertigung, auf die wir hoffen, durch den Geist in Kraft des Glaubens.
For we, by the help of the Spirit, are eagerly waiting for the fulfillment of our hope – that we may be pronounced righteous as the result of faith.
6 In Christus Jesus nützt die Beschneidung nichts noch das Unbeschnittensein, sondern Glaube, der durch die Liebe wirkt.
If we are in union with Christ Jesus, neither is circumcision nor the omission of it anything, but faith, working through love, is everything.
7 Ihr waret in so gutem Lauf. Wer hat euch aufgehalten, daß ihr der Wahrheit nicht mehr folgen wollt?
You were once making good progress! Who has hindered you from obeying the truth?
8 Die Umstimmung kommt nicht von dem, der euch berufen hat.
The persuasion brought to bear on you does not come from him who calls you.
9 Ein wenig Sauerteig durchsäuert den ganzen Teig.
A little yeast leavens all the dough.
10 Ich habe zu euch das Vertrauen im Herrn, daß ihr nicht anderen Sinnes werdet. Doch wird sein Urteil ertragen müssen, mag sein, wer es will, wer bei euch Verwirrung stiftet.
I, through my union with the Lord, am persuaded that you will learn to think with me. But the man who is disturbing your minds will have to bear his punishment, whoever he may be.
11 Wenn ich aber, liebe Brüder, noch die Beschneidung predigte, warum werde ich dann noch verfolgt? Dann ist ja das Ärgernis des Kreuzes aus der Welt geschafft.
If I, friends, am still proclaiming circumcision, why am I still persecuted? It seems that the cross has ceased to be an obstacle!
12 Möchten doch die, die euch verwirren, sich gleich entmannen lassen.
I could even wish that the people who are unsettling you would go further still and mutilate themselves.
13 Zur Freiheit seid ihr berufen worden, liebe Brüder. Mißbraucht aber die Freiheit nicht als einen Vorwand für ein Leben nach dem Fleische; nein, dient einander in Liebe!
Remember, friends, to you the call came to give you freedom. Only, do not make your freedom an opportunity for self-indulgence but serve one another in a loving spirit.
14 Denn das ganze Gesetz ist mit dem einen Wort erfüllt: "Du sollst deinen Nächsten lieben wie dich selbst!"
Indeed, the whole Law has been summed up in this one precept – ‘You must love your neighbor as you love yourself.’
15 Wenn ihr jedoch einander beißt und auffreßt, seht dann nur zu, daß ihr nicht voneinander aufgefressen werdet.
But, if you are continually wounding and preying on one another, take care that you are not destroyed by one another.
16 Ich sage: Wandelt im Geiste, dann werdet ihr die Lüste des Fleisches nicht mehr vollbringen.
This is what I have to say – Let your steps be guided by the Spirit, and then you will never gratify the cravings of your earthly nature.
17 Das Fleisch gelüstet es ja gegen den Geist, des Geistes Begehren widerspricht dem Fleische; sie liegen in Streit miteinander, so daß ihr das nicht tut, was ihr möchtet.
For these cravings of our earthly nature conflict with the Spirit, and the Spirit with our earthly nature – they are two contrary principles – so that you cannot do what you wish.
18 Laßt ihr euch aber vom Geiste leiten, dann steht ihr nicht unter dem Gesetze.
But, if you follow the guidance of the Spirit, you are not subject to Law.
19 Offenkundig sind die Werke des Fleisches, zum Beispiel Unzucht, Unkeuschheit Schamlosigkeit, Wollust,
The sins of our earthly nature are unmistakable. They are sins like these – sexual immorality, impurity, indecency,
20 Abgötterei, Zauberei, Feindschaft, Streit, Eifersucht, Zorn, Zwietracht, Spaltungen, Parteien,
idolatry, sorcery, quarrels, strife, jealousy, outbursts of passion, rivalries, dissensions, divisions,
21 Neid Mord, Trunkenheit, Schlemmerei und anderes dergleichen. Was ich euch früher schon gesagt habe, das wiederhole ich: Die solches treiben, werden das Reich Gottes nicht erben.
feelings of envy, drunkenness, revelry, and the like. And I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who indulge in such things will have no place in the kingdom of God.
22 Des Geistes Frucht dagegen ist: Liebe, Freude, Friede, Langmut, Wohlwollen, Güte, Vertrauen,
But the fruit produced by the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindliness, generosity, trustfulness, gentleness, self-control.
23 Sanftmut Keuschheit und Enthaltsamkeit. Dem steht das Gesetz auf keinen Fall entgegen.
Against such things there is no law!
24 Die aber Christus Jesus angehören, haben ihr Fleisch mitsamt den Leidenschaften und den Lüsten ans Kreuz geschlagen.
And those who belong to Jesus, the Christ, have already crucified their earthly nature, with its passions and its cravings.
25 Wenn wir nun durch den Geist das Leben haben, dann laßt uns auch im Geiste wandeln.
Since our life is due to the Spirit, let us rule our conduct also by the Spirit.
26 Laßt uns nicht nach eitlem Ruhme trachten und nicht einander reizen und gegenseitig uns beneiden!
Do not let us grow vain, and provoke or envy one another.
