Galater 4
1 Ich sage nun: Solange der Erbe noch nicht mündig ist, unterscheidet er sich in nichts von einem Sklaven, obgleich er Herr von allem ist.
What I am saying is that as long as the heir is a child, he is no different from a slave, although he is the owner of everything.
2 Er steht vielmehr unter Vormündern und Verwaltern bis auf die vom Vater festgesetzte Zeit.
He is subject to guardians and trustees until the date set by his father.
3 So war es auch bei uns: Solange wir noch nicht mündig waren, lebten wir geknechtet unter den Weltgeistern.
So also, when we were children, we were enslaved under the basic principles of the world.
4 Da kam die Fülle der Zeit, und Gott sandte seinen Sohn, der, vom Weib geboren, dem Gesetz unterworfen war.
But when the time had fully come, God sent His Son, born of a woman, born under the law,
5 Er sollte die, die unter dem Gesetze standen, loskaufen, und wir sollten die Annahme an Sohnes Statt erhalten.
to redeem those under the law, that we might receive our adoption as sons.
6 Weil ihr nun Söhne seid, so sandte Gott in unsere Herzen den Geist seines Sohnes, und dieser ruft:"Abba!" "Vater!"
And because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying out, “Abba, Father!”
7 So bist du also nicht mehr Sklave, sondern Sohn; wenn aber Sohn, dann Erbe durch Gott.
So you are no longer a slave, but a son; and since you are a son, you are also an heir through God.
8 Damals freilich, als ihr Gott nicht kanntet, da dientet ihr den Göttern, die es in Wirklichkeit doch gar nicht gibt.
Formerly, when you did not know God, you were slaves to those who by nature are not gods.
9 Jetzt aber erkennt ihr Gott, vielmehr, ihr seid von Gott erkannt. Wie könnt ihr euch wiederum den schwachen und armseligen Geistern zuwenden und ihnen noch einmal von neuem dienstbar werden?
But now that you know God, or rather are known by God, how is it that you are turning back to those weak and worthless principles? Do you wish to be enslaved by them all over again?
10 Ihr beobachtet ja Tage, Monate, Festzeiten und Jahre.
You are observing special days and months and seasons and years!
11 Ich fürchte für euch, ob ich mich nicht vergeblich unter euch abgemüht habe.
I fear for you, that my efforts for you may have been in vain.
12 Liebe Brüder, ich bitte euch, werdet wie ich! Auch ich bin euch gleich geworden, ihr habt mir nichts zuleid getan.
I beg you, brothers, become like me, for I became like you. You have done me no wrong.
13 Ihr wißt, wie ich in körperlicher Schwachheit euch damals das Evangelium verkündet habe.
You know that it was because of an illness that I first preached the gospel to you.
14 Jedoch trotz der Prüfung, die für euch in meinem schwachen Zustande lag, habt ihr mich nicht verachtet noch vor mir ausgespuckt, vielmehr mich aufgenommen wie einen Engel Gottes, ja wie Christus Jesus selbst.
And although my illness was a trial to you, you did not despise or reject me. Instead, you welcomed me as if I were an angel of God, as if I were Christ Jesus Himself.
15 Wo ist jetzt eure freudige Begeisterung? Ich kann es euch bezeugen: Ihr hättet, wenn es möglich wäre, euch die Augen ausgerissen und sie mir gegeben.
What then has become of your blessing? For I can testify that, if it were possible, you would have torn out your eyes and given them to me.
16 Bin ich denn nunmehr euer Feind geworden, weil ich euch die Wahrheit Sage?
Have I now become your enemy by telling you the truth?
17 Jene werben um euch nicht in guter Absicht. Sie möchten euch abwendig machen, damit ihr sie alsdann umwerbet.
Those people are zealous for you, but not in a good way. Instead, they want to isolate you from us, so that you may be zealous for them.
18 Es ist ja schön, wenn man umworben wird, allerdings nur in einer guten Sache und allezeit und nicht bloß, solange ich bei euch bin.
Nevertheless, it is good to be zealous if it serves a noble purpose—at any time, and not only when I am with you.
19 Liebe Kinder! Von neuem liege ich mit euch in Wehen, bis Christus in euch Gestalt gewonnen hat.
My children, for whom I am again in the pains of childbirth until Christ is formed in you,
20 Ich möchte jetzt bei euch sein und einen anderen Ton anschlagen können; in großer Sorge bin ich euretwegen.
how I wish I could be with you now and change my tone, because I am perplexed about you.
21 Sagt mir, ihr, die ihr so gern unter dem Gesetz stehen möchtet: Hört ihr das Gesetz nicht?
Tell me, you who want to be under the law, do you not understand what the law says?
22 Es steht geschrieben: "Abraham hatte zwei Söhne, den einen von der Magd, den anderen von der Freien.
For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by the slave woman and the other by the free woman.
23 Der Sohn der Magd war natürlich geboren worden; der Sohn der Freien aber durch Verheißung."
His son by the slave woman was born according to the flesh, but his son by the free woman was born through the promise.
24 Das ist bildlich zu verstehen: Diese (Frauen) sind die beiden Testamente; das eine das Testament vom Berge Sinai, das nur Knechte gebiert, das ist die Agar.
These things serve as illustrations, for the women represent two covenants. One covenant is from Mount Sinai and bears children into slavery: This is Hagar.
25 Agar bedeutet nämlich den Berg Sinai in Arabien. Es entspricht dem jetzigen Jerusalem, das samt den Kindern in der Knechtschaft ist.
Now Hagar stands for Mount Sinai in Arabia and corresponds to the present-day Jerusalem, because she is in slavery with her children.
26 Doch frei ist das Jerusalem dort oben, und das ist unsere Mutter.
But the Jerusalem above is free, and she is our mother.
27 Es steht ja auch geschrieben: "Freu dich, du unfruchtbare, die du nicht geboren hast, o juble laut du, die du keine Wehen kennst! Zahlreicher sind die Kinder der Vereinsamten als die der Vermählten."
For it is written: “Rejoice, O barren woman, who bears no children; break forth and cry aloud, you who have never travailed; because more are the children of the desolate woman than of her who has a husband.”
28 Ihr aber, liebe Brüder, seid, wie Isaak, Kinder der Verheißung.
Now you, brothers, like Isaac, are children of promise.
29 Wie aber damals der natürlich Geborene den nach dem Geiste Geborenen verfolgte, so ist es auch heute noch. Was sagt jedoch die Schrift?
At that time, however, the son born by the flesh persecuted the son born by the Spirit. It is the same now.
30 "Verstoße die Magd und ihren Sohn; der Sohn der Magd darf nicht mit dem Sohn der Freien erben!"
But what does the Scripture say? “Expel the slave woman and her son, for the slave woman’s son will never share in the inheritance with the free woman’s son.”
31 So sind wir also, meine lieben Brüder, nicht Kinder der Magd, sondern der Freien.
Therefore, brothers, we are not children of the slave woman, but of the free woman.
