Esra 4

1 Judas Feinde aber und die Benjamins hörten, daß die Söhne der Gefangenschaft dem Herrn, dem Gotte Israels, einen Tempel bauten.

And they that afflicted Juda and Benjamin heard, that the children of the captivity were building a house to the Lord God of Israel.

2 Da traten sie zu Zerubbabel und zu den Familienhäuptern und sagten ihnen: "Wir wollen mit euch bauen; denn wir suchen euren Gott wie ihr. Wir opfern ihm seit den Tagen des Assyrerkönigs Assarhadon, der uns hierher gebracht hat."

And they drew near to Zorobabel, and to the heads of families, and said to them, We will build with you; for as you [do], we seek [to serve] our God, and we do sacrifice to him from the days of Asaradan king of Assur, who brought us hither.

3 Da sprachen Zerubbabel und Jesua und die übrigen Familienhäupter Israels zu ihnen: "Nein! Ihr und wir können kein Haus für unseren Gott bauen. Wir allein bauen es für den Herrn, Israels Gott, wie uns der König Cyrus, der Perserkönig, befohlen hat."

then Zorobabel, and Jesus and the rest of the heads of the families of Israel said to them, [It is] not for us and you to build a house to our God, for we ourselves will build together to the Lord our God, as Cyrus the king of the Persians commanded us.

4 Da machten die Völker der Länder das Volk Juda mutlos und schreckten es vom Bauen ab.

And the people of the land weakened the hands of the people of Juda, and hindered them in building,

5 Sie dingten wider sie Ratgeber, um ihren Plan zu vereiteln, die ganze Zeit des Perserkönigs Cyrus hindurch bis zur Herrschaft des Perserkönigs Darius.

and [continued] hiring [persons] against them, plotting to frustrate their counsel, all the days of Cyrus king of the Persians, and until the reign of Darius king of the Persians.

6 Unter der Regierung des Ahasveros, zu Anfang seiner Herrschaft, schrieben sie eine Klage gegen die Bewohner Judas und Jerusalems.

And in the reign of Assuerus, even in the beginning of his reign, they wrote a letter against the inhabitants of Juda and Jerusalem.

7 Und in der Zeit des Artachsast schrieben Bislam, Mitredat, Tabel und die anderen seiner Amtsgenossen an Artachsast, den Perserkönig. Das Klageschreiben war nach Schrift und Sprache aramäisch.

And in the days of Arthasastha, Tabeel wrote peaceably to Mithradates and to the rest of his fellow-servants: the tribute-gatherer wrote to Arthasastha king of the Persians a writing in the Syrian tongue, and [the same] interpreted.

8 Rechum, der Ratsherr, und der Schreiber Simsai schrieben einen Brief wider Jerusalem an den König Artachsast, folgenden Inhalts:

Reum the chancellor, and Sampsa the scribe wrote an epistle against Jerusalem to King Arthasastha, [saying, ]

9 "Rechum, der Ratsherr, und der Schreiber Simsai und ihre übrigen Amtsgenossen, die Gerichtsvollzieher und die Eparchen aus Tripolis, Babel, Susa, das ist aus Elam,

Thus has judged Reum the chancellor, and Sampsa the scribe, and the rest of our fellow-servants, the Dinaeans, the Apharsathachaeans, the Tarphalaeans, the Apharsaeans, the Archyaeans, the Babylonians, the Susanachaeans, Davaeans,

10 und solche der anderen Nationen, die Osnappar, der Große und Erlauchte, weggeführt und in den Städten Samarias und in dem übrigen Syrien angesiedelt hat usw."

and the rest of the nations whom the great and noble Assenaphar removed, and settled them in the cities of Somoron, and the rest [of them] beyond the river.

11 Dies ist eine Abschrift des Briefes, den sie dem König Artachsast sandten: "Deine Sklaven, die Leute von Syrien usw.

This [is] the purport of the letter, which they sent to him: Your servants the men beyond the river to king Arthasastha.

12 Dem König sei mitgeteilt, daß die Juden, die aus deiner Nähe zu uns gezogen, nach Jerusalem gelangt sind. Sie bauen die aufrührerische und böse Stadt auf, stellen ihre Mauer her und bessern die Wehren aus.

Be it known to the king, that the Jews who came up from you to us have come to Jerusalem the rebellious and wicked city, which they are building, and its walls are set in order, and they have established the foundations of it.

13 Deshalb sei dem König mitgeteilt: Falls jene Stadt aufgebaut und die Mauern hergestellt werden, entrichten sie keine Steuer, keine Abgabe und keinen Zoll mehr. So wird das Einkommen der Könige geschädigt.

Now then be it known to the king, that if that city be built up, and its walls completed, you shall have no tribute, neither will they pay [anything], and this injures kings.

14 Weil wir das Salz des Palastes essen und weil uns des Königs Verunglimpfungen anzusehen nicht ansteht, darum schicken wir her und melden es dem König.

And it is not lawful for us to see the dishonor of the king: therefore have we sent and made known [the matter] to the king;

15 Man forsche im Buche der Denkwürdigkeiten deiner Väter! Du findest und erfährst im Buche der Denkwürdigkeiten, daß jene Stadt eine aufrührerische Stadt gewesen ist und daß sie Könige und Provinzen geschädigt und daß man in ihr Empörung seit alter Zeit gestiftet hat. Eben darum ist jene Stadt zerstört worden.

That examination may be made in your fathers' book of record; and you shall find, and you shall know that city [is] rebellious, and does harm to kings and countries, and there are in the midst of it from very old time refuges for [runaway] slaves: therefore this city has been made desolate.

16 Wir melden dem König: Falls jene Stadt aufgebaut und ihre Mauern hergestellt werden, hast du keinen Teil mehr an Syrien."

We therefore declare to the king, that, if that city be built, and its walls be set up, you shall not have peace.

17 Dann sandte der König Bescheid an Rechum, den Ratsherrn, an Simsai, den Schreiber, und an die anderen Amtsgenossen, die in Samaria und sonst in Syrien wohnten: "Gruß usw.

Then the king sent to Reum the chancellor, and Sampsa the scribe, and the rest of their fellow-servants who lived in Samaria, and the rest beyond the river, [saying, ]Peace; and he says,

18 Das Schreiben, das ihr uns gesandt habt, ist in Übersetzung vor mir verlesen worden.

The tribute-gatherer whom you sent to us, has been called before me.

19 Von mir ist der Befehl ergangen, und man hat nachgeforscht und gefunden, daß sich jene Stadt seit alter Zeit gegen Könige erhob und daß Aufruhr und Empörung darin gestiftet wurden.

And a decree has been made by me, and we have examined, and found that city of old time exalts itself against kings, and that rebellions and desertions take place within it.

20 Mächtige Könige herrschten über Jerusalem und schalteten in ganz Syrien. Ihnen wurde Steuer, Abgabe und Zoll entrichtet.

And there were powerful kings in Jerusalem, and they ruled over all the [country] beyond the river, and abundant revenues and tribute were given to them.

21 Darum gebt Befehl, daß jenen Männern gewehrt werde! Jene Stadt soll nicht mehr aufgebaut werden, bis von mir Befehl hierzu erteilt wird.

Now therefore make a decree to stop the work of those men, and that city shall no more be built.

22 Nehmt euch aber in acht, hierin keinen Fehler zu tun, damit nicht ein Schaden zum Nachteil der Könige erwachse!"

[See] that you be careful of the decree, [not] to be remiss concerning this matter, lest at any time destruction should abound to the harm of kings.

23 Sobald nun die Abschrift des Schreibens vom König Artachsast vor dem Ratsherrn Rechum, dem Schreiber Simsai und ihren Amtsgenossen verlesen worden war, zogen sie eilends nach Jerusalem gegen die Judäer und hinderten sie mit Zwang und Gewalt.

Then the tribute-gatherer of king Arthasastha read [the letter] before Reum the chancellor, and Sampsa the scribe, and his fellow-servants: and they went in haste to Jerusalem and through Juda, and caused them to cease with horses and an [armed] force.

24 Damals war die Arbeit am Gotteshaus zu Jerusalem gehindert. Und sie unterblieb bis zum zweiten Regierungsjahr des Perserkönigs Darius.

Then ceased the work of the house of God in Jerusalem, and it was at a stand until the second year of the reign of Darius king of the Persians.
