Hesekiel 18

1 Das Wort des Herrn erging an mich:

The word of Jehovah came to me again, saying:

2 "Wie kommt gerade ihr dazu, daß ihr vom Lande Israel das Sprichwort braucht: 'Die Väter aßen saure Trauben; doch erst den Kindern wurden ihre Zähne stumpf davon'?

What mean ye, that ye use this proverb concerning the land of Israel, saying, “The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge”?

3 So wahr ich lebe!" Ein Spruch des Herrn, des Herrn. "Ihr sollt in Israel nicht ferner diesen Spruch gebrauchen.

As I live, saith the Lord Jehovah, ye shall not have occasion any more to use this proverb in Israel.

4 Mir gelten alle Seelen gleich. Der Vater gilt das gleiche wie der Sohn. Und nur wer sündigt, der muß sterben.

Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son, is mine; the soul that sinneth, it shall die.

5 Ist jemand ein Gerechter und handhabt er Gerechtigkeit und Recht

But if a man be just, and do that which is lawful and right;

6 und nimmt er nicht am Mahl auf Bergen teil, erhebt er seine Augen nicht zu Götzenbildern in dem Hause Israel, entehrt er nicht des Nachbarn Weib und naht er nicht dem Weibe sich im Unreinsein

if he eat not upon the mountains, and lift not up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, and defile not his neighbor's wife, and come not near a woman during her uncleanness;

7 und unterdrückt er niemanden, nimmt keine Pfändung vor, begeht nicht Raub und teilt er mit den Hungrigen sein Brot, bedeckt die Nackten mit Gewändern,

if he oppress not any, if he restore to the debtor his pledge, spoil none by violence, give his bread to the hungry, and cover the naked with a garment;

8 leiht er kein Geld auf Wucher aus und nimmt nicht Zinsen, hält er vom Unrecht seine Hand zurück und handelt er nach wahrem Rechte gegen seine Nebenmenschen,

if he give not forth upon usury, and take not increase; if he withdraw his hand from iniquity, and give true judgment between man and man;

9 und lebt er auch nach meinen Vorschriften und hält genau, was ich befohlen: Solch ein Gerechter, der soll leben." Ein Spruch des Herrn, des Herrn.

if he walk in my statutes and keep my commandments, to deal uprightly, —he is just; he shall surely live, saith the Lord Jehovah.

10 "Und hat er einen Bösewicht zum Sohn, der Blut vergießt und etwas derart tut,

But if he have a son that is a robber, a shedder of blood, and that doeth to his brother any of these things,

11 was jener niemals sich erlaubte, daß er auf Bergen schmaust und seines Nachbarn Weib entehrt,

and doeth not all those duties, but eateth upon the mountains, and defileth his neighbor's wife,

12 daß er den Dürftigen und Armen unterdrückt und Raub begeht und nicht zurückgibt das Verpfändete, daß er zu Götzen seine Hände hebt und Greueltaten tut,

oppresseth the poor and needy, spoileth by violence, restoreth not the pledge, lifteth up his eyes to idols, and committeth abomination,

13 daß er auf Wucher leiht und Zinsen nimmt: Ein solcher sollte leben dürfen? Nein, leben soll er nicht, der solche Greuel tut. Doch er allein verdient den Tod; auf ihm soll seine Blutschuld lasten.

giveth forth upon usury, and taketh increase, shall he live? No! he shall not live. He hath done all these abominations; he shall surely die; his blood shall be upon him.

14 Hat dieser wieder einen Sohn, der seinen Vater sieht die vielen Sünden tun, er aber fürchtet sich und tut nicht so;

Yet lo, if he have a son that seeth all the sins which his father committed, that seeth them and doeth not such like,

15 er schmaust nicht auf den Bergen und hebt nicht seine Augen zu den Götzen im Haus Israel, entehrt nicht seines Nachbarn Weib

that eateth not upon the mountains, nor lifteth up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, nor defileth his neighbor's wife,

16 und unterdrückt niemanden, noch nimmt er Pfändung vor, begeht auch keinen Raub und teilt sein Brot mit Hungrigen, bedeckt mit Kleidern Nackte

nor oppresseth any, nor taketh a pledge, nor spoileth by violence, but giveth his food to the hungry, and covereth the naked with a garment,

17 und hält vom Unrecht seine Hand zurück und nimmt nicht Wuchervorteil an, nicht Zins, und tut, was ich befohlen, und lebt nach meinen Satzungen: Ein solcher stirbt nicht wegen seines Vaters Missetat; er soll am Leben bleiben.

keepeth back his hand from the poor, and taketh no usury or increase, keepeth my commandments, and walketh in my statutes, he shall not die for the iniquity of his father; he shall surely live.

18 Sein Vater aber, der Gewalt verübt und Raub getan an seinen Brüdern, der unter seinem Volke Schlechtigkeiten trieb, der muß um seiner Sünden willen sterben.

As for his father, because he cruelly oppressed, spoiled his brother by violence, and did that which is not good among his people, lo, he shall die for his iniquity.

19 Und saget ihr: Warum büßt nicht der Sohn des Vaters Missetat? Es hat der Sohn Gerechtigkeit und Recht geübt, all meine Vorschriften gehalten und befolgt; er darf am Leben bleiben.

Yet say ye, “Why? Doth not the son bear the iniquity of the father?” When the son doeth that which is lawful and right, keepeth all my statutes and doeth them, he shall surely live.

20 Wer sündigt, der allein soll sterben; kein Sohn soll büßen für des Vaters Schuld. Den Frommen soll die Frömmigkeit, den Bösen schlimmes Tun in Rechnung kommen.

The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son. The righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.

21 Doch kehrt der Bösewicht sich ab von allen Sünden, die er tat, und hält, was ich geboten, und übt Gerechtigkeit und Recht, so soll er leben und nicht sterben.

But if the wicked will turn from all his sins which he hath committed, and keep all my statutes, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall surely live, he shall not die.

22 Von seinen Sünden all, die er begangen, soll keine einzige ihm angerechnet werden. Er lebe wegen der Gerechtigkeit, die er geübt!

None of his transgressions which he hath committed shall be remembered unto him; for his righteousness, which he hath done, he shall live.

23 Soll ich Gefallen finden an des Sünders Tod?" Ein Spruch des Herrn, des Herrn. "Und nicht daran, daß er, von seinem Wandel sich bekehrend, lebe?

Have I any pleasure at all that the wicked should die, saith the Lord Jehovah, and not that he should turn from his ways and live?

24 Wenn sich der Fromme seiner Frömmigkeit entäußert und Schlechtes tut, und treibt er alle Greuel, die der Schlechte treibt, soll er am Leben bleiben? Gedacht wird nicht mehr aller seiner frommen Taten. Er stirbt des Frevels wegen, den er tut.

But when the righteous turneth from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, and doeth according to all the abominations which the wicked man doeth, shall he live? All his righteousness which he hath done shall not be remembered; for his trespass which he hath trespassed, and for his sin which he hath sinned, for them shall he die.

25 Doch wenn ihr sagt: 'Des Herrn Verfahren ist nicht in der Ordnung', so hört doch, ihr vom Hause Israel! Ja, sollte mein Verfahren nicht in Ordnung sein? Ist nicht vielmehr euer Verhalten nicht in Ordnung?

Yet ye say, “The way of the Lord is not right.” Hear now, O house of Israel! “Is not my way right?” Is it not your ways that are not right?

26 Wenn seiner Frömmigkeit der Fromme sich entäußert und übt er Frevel aus und stirbt darüber, so stirbt er wegen seines Frevels, den er tat.

When a righteous man turneth from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, and on this account dieth, for his iniquity which he hath done doth he die.

27 Doch kehrt der Schlechte um von seinem schlimmen Wesen, das er trieb, und übt Gerechtigkeit und Recht, sein Leben wird er dann behalten.

And when the wicked man turneth from his iniquity which he hath committed, and doeth that which is lawful and right, he shall save his soul alive.

28 Weil er zur Einsicht kam und sich von allen den begangnen Sünden wandte, soll er leben und nicht sterben.

Because he considereth and turneth from all his transgressions which he hath committed, he shall surely live, he shall not die.

29 Und spricht das Haus von Israel: 'Des Herrn Verfahren ist nicht in der Ordnung', ja, mein Verfahren wäre nicht in Ordnung, Haus Israel? Ist eures vielmehr nicht in Ordnung?

Yet saith the house of Israel, “The way of the Lord is not right.” O house of Israel, are not my ways right? Is it not your ways that are not right?

30 So richte ich denn jeglichen von euch nach seinem Richten, Haus Israel." Ein Spruch des Herrn, des Herrn. "Kehrt um! Laßt ab von allen euren Sünden, daß nicht die Sünde euch zum Sturz gereiche!

Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways, saith the Lord Jehovah. Turn ye, turn yourselves from all your transgressions, so that iniquity may not be your ruin.

31 Werft weg von euch all eure Sünden, durch die ihr euch vergangen! Ein neues Herz schafft euch und einen neuen Geist! Warum denn wollt ihr sterben, du Haus Israel?

Cast away from you all your transgressions which ye have committed, and make you a new heart, and a new spirit! For why will ye die, O house of Israel?

32 Ich habe kein Gefallen an dem Tode dessen, der ihn verdient", ein Spruch des Herrn, des Herrn. "Damit ihr lebet, kehret um!"

For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, saith the Lord Jehovah. Wherefore turn yourselves and live!
