1 Hernach verlieh der König Ahasveros dem Haman, Hammedatas Sohn, dem Agagiter, eine hohe Stellung und zeichnete ihn aus und setzte seinen Stuhl dem aller Fürsten bei ihm vor.
Some time after this, King Xerxes honored Haman, son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, giving him a position higher than all his fellow officials.
2 Und alle königlichen Diener in dem königlichen Tore beugten ihre Knie und warfen sich vor Haman nieder. So hatte es der König für ihn angeordnet. Doch Mordekai wollte seine Knie nicht beugen und sich nicht niederwerfen.
All the officials in royal employment bowed down and showed respect to Haman, for this is what the king had commanded. But Mordecai would not bow down and show respect to him.
3 Die königlichen Diener in dem königlichen Tore fragten Mordekai: "Weswegen übertrittst du das Gebot des Königs?"
The king's officials asked Mordecai, “Why are you disobeying the king's command?”
4 Als sie's nun täglich zu ihm sagten, er aber niemals auf sie hörte, da zeigten sie's dem Haman an, damit sie sähen, ob Mordekais Ausrede gelte. Er hatte nämlich mitgeteilt, er sei ein Jude.
They talked to him about it day after day, but he refused to listen. So they told Haman about it to see if he would put up with what Mordecai was doing, for Mordecai had told them he was a Jew.
5 Als Haman sah, daß Mordekai seine Knie nicht vor ihm beugte und sich nicht niederwarf, ward Haman voller Zorn.
Haman was furious when he saw that Mordecai did not bow down and show respect to him.
6 Doch deuchte es ihm gar verächtlich, an Mordekai allein die Hand zu legen. Man hatte ihm das Volkstum Mordekais auch mitgeteilt. So trachtete Haman danach, die Juden all im ganzen Reich des Ahasveros, die Volksgenossen Mordekais, zu vernichten.
Having found out who Mordecai's people were, he dismissed the idea of just killing Mordecai. He decided to kill every Jew in the whole Persian Empire—all of Mordecai's people!
7 Am ersten Neumond, das ist im Monat Nisan, im zwölften Jahr des Königs Ahasveros, warf man das Pur, das ist das Los, vor Haman, von einem Tag zum anderen, von einem Monat zum anderen.
In the twelfth year of King Xerxes, in the first month, the month of Nisan, “pur” (meaning a “lot”) was cast in Haman's presence to choose a day and month, taking each day and each month one at a time. The lot fell on the twelfth month, the month of Adar.
8 Da sagte Haman zum König Ahasveros: "Es gibt ein ganz besonderes Volk, das bei den Völkern da in allen Ländern deines Reiches zerstreut und abgesondert lebt. Verschieden auch sind seine Vorschriften von denen jedes anderen Volkes. Sie folgen nicht den Satzungen des Königs, daß es dem König gar nichts nützt, sie so gewähren zu lassen.
Haman went to King Xerxes and said, “There's a particular people living among others in many different places throughout the provinces of your empire who cut themselves off from everybody else. They have their own laws which are different to those of any other people, and what's more, they don't obey the king's laws. So it's not a good idea for Your Majesty to ignore them.
9 Ist es dem König recht, so möge schriftlich angeordnet werden, sie zu vernichten. Dann kann ich zehntausend Talente Silber den Schatzbeamten darwägen, damit sie's in die Schatzkammern des Königs überführen."
If it please Your Majesty, issue a decree to destroy them, and I will personally contribute 10,000 silver talents to those who carry out the king's business to be placed in the royal treasury.”
10 Da zog der König seinen Siegelring von seiner Hand und übergab ihn Haman, Hammedatas Sohn, dem Agagiter, dem Feind der Juden.
The king took off his signet ring and handed it to Haman, son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, the enemy of the Jews.
11 Der König sprach dabei zu Haman: "Das Silber sei dir überlassen sowie das Volk, daß du ihm tust nach Belieben!"
The king told Haman, “You can have the money, and do to the people whatever you want.”
12 Des Königs Schreiber wurden in dem ersten Monat am dreizehnten berufen und so, wie's Haman angeordnet, erging ein schriftlicher Befehl, sowohl an die Satrapen wie an die Statthalter, die über den einzelnen Provinzen standen, an die Beamten all der Völker, der Schriftart einer jeden einzelnen Provinz entsprechend, sowie der Sprache jeder einzelnen Nation. Und der Befehl war in des Königs Ahasveros Namen abgefaßt und mit dem königlichen Siegelring versiegelt.
On the thirteenth day of the first month the king's secretaries were summoned. A decree was issued in accordance with everything Haman demanded and sent to the king's chief officers, the governors of the different provinces and the nobles of the various peoples in the provinces. It was sent in the script of each province and in the language of every people, with the authorization of King Xerxes and sealed with his signet ring.
13 Die Schreiben wurden abgesandt durch Eilboten in alle königlichen Länder mit dem Befehl, die Juden alle zu vertilgen, zu töten und sie zu vernichten, die jungen wie die Alten und Kinder mit den Weibern an einem Tag, am dreizehnten des zwölften Monds, das ist im Monat Adar, und ihre Habe als Beute zu verteilen.
Letters were sent by messenger to all the provinces in the king's empire with orders to destroy, kill, and annihilate all Jews, young and old, women and children, and confiscate their possessions, all in one day—the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, the month of Adar.
14 Des Schreibens Inhalt ging dahin, es solle ein Gesetz in jeder einzelnen Provinz erlassen werden und allen Völkern kundgetan, daß sie auf diesen Tag gerüstet wären.
A copy of the decree was to be issued as law in every province and publicized to the people so that they would be ready for the day.
15 Eilends zogen Eilboten auf königlich Geheiß hinaus, sobald das Gesetz zu Susan in der Burg erlassen war. Der König aber setzte sich zu einem Trinkgelage mit Haman nieder. Inzwischen aber kam die Stadt Susan in Aufregung.
By order of the king the messengers hurried on their way. The decree was also issued in the fortress of Susa. The king and Haman sat down for a drink while the people in city of Susa were very disturbed.
