1 Die Worte des Davidsohnes Kohelet, des Königs von Jerusalem, lauten:

3 Was hat der Mensch von seiner Mühe all, mit der er unter dieser Sonne regsam ist; ,

4 Geschlechter gehn, Geschlechter kommen; doch ewig bleibt die Erde stehen.

5 Aufgeht die Sonne, untergeht die Sonne, sie keucht nach ihrem Ort und geht doch wieder auf.

6 Der Wind weht nach dem Süden und kreist zum Norden; er geht im Kreis, und nur zu seinem Kreislauf kehrt der Wind zurück.

7 Die Ströme ziehen all zum Meere; doch wird das Meer nicht voll. Zur Stätte, wo der Ströme Quelle, kehren sie zu neuem Laufe.

8 Die Worte all versagen; kein Mensch kann es erklären; kein Auge völlig übersehen, kein Ohr erschöpfend es vernehmen.

9 Was einst gewesen, das ist jetzt, und was geschehen, das geschieht. Nichts Neues gibt es unter dieser Sonne.

13 Ich war bedacht, zu forschen, zu ergründen an der Weisheit Hand, was unterm Himmel sich vollzieht. Ein leidig Ding, was Gott den Menschenkindern zugeteilt zu ihrer Plage.

14 Ich sah, was unter dieser Sonne je geschehen. Sieh, alles war nur eitel und Geistesspiel,

15 nur Krummes, das man nie gerade macht, nur Mangelhaftes, das man nicht berechnen kann.

16 Ich sagte mir: "Fürwahr, ich wurde groß und wuchs an Weisheit über alle, die vor mir zu Jerusalem geherrscht. Viel Weisheit und viel Wissen sah mein Geist."

17 Doch als ich meinen Sinn darauf gelenkt, herauszubringen, was es um die Weisheit und um Wissen sei, um Torheit und um Tollheit, da kam ich zu der Einsicht: Auch das ist selbst ein Hirngespinst.

18 Denn wo viel Weisheit, ist viel Ärger. Wer Wissen mehrt, der mehrt auch Leid.
