Prediger 8
1 Wer gleicht dem Weisen? Wer kennt der Dinge Deutung? - Die Klugheit macht des Menschen Antlitz hell und wandelt seines Angesichtes Trotz.
Who is as the wise man? and who knoweth the interpretation of a thing? the wisedome of a man doth make his face to shine: and the strength of his face shalbe changed.
2 Ich sag: Beachte das Geheiß des Königs, des Gotteseides wegen!
I aduertise thee to take heede to ye mouth of the King, and to the worde of the othe of God.
3 Nicht vorschnell falle von ihm ab! Tritt keiner bösen Sache bei! Denn was er will, das tut er auch.
Haste not to goe forth of his sight: stand not in an euill thing: for he will doe whatsoeuer pleaseth him.
4 Dem Königswort ist Macht. Wer sagt zu ihm: "Was tust du da?"
Where the word of ye King is, there is power, and who shall say vnto him, What doest thou?
5 Wer das Gebot befolgt, erfährt nichts Schlimmes. Die rechte Zeit erfährt ein weises Herz.
He that keepeth the commandement, shall knowe none euill thing, and the heart of the wise shall knowe the time and iudgement.
6 Für jeglich Ding gibt es die rechte Zeit. - Gar schwer liegt auf dem Menschen dieses Übel,
For to euery purpose there is a time and iudgement, because the miserie of man is great vpon him.
7 daß er nicht weiß, was wird. Wer zeigt ihm an, wie's werden wird?
For he knoweth not that which shalbe: for who can tell him when it shalbe?
8 Kein Mensch ist Herr des Lebensodems, daß er den Lebenshauch behalten könnte. Kein Machtgebot gilt für den Sterbetag, im Todeskampf hilft keine Kriegerschar. - Doch hilft auch nicht der Frevel seinem Herrn. -
Man is not lorde ouer the spirit to retaine the spirite: neither hath hee power in the day of death, nor deliuerance in the battell, neither shall wickednesse deliuer the possessers thereof.
9 Dies habe ich genau gesehn, weil ich den Sinn auf alles Tun gerichtet, das unter dieser Sonne wird vollbracht zu einer Zeit, wo Menschen über andere zum Unheil herrschen.
All this haue I seene, and haue giuen mine heart to euery worke, which is wrought vnder the sunne, and I sawe a time that man ruleth ouer man to his owne hurt.
10 Ich sah, wie Frevler sich hervordrängten und kamen, wie aber die, die recht gehandelt, fort von heiliger Stätte mußten und in der Stadt vergessen wurden. Auch das ist eitel.
And likewise I sawe the wicked buried, and they returned, and they that came from the holy place, were yet forgotten in the citie where they had done right: this also is vanitie.
11 Weil böser Tat das Urteil nicht sogleich gesprochen wird, schwillt Mut den Menschenkindern, Böses zu verüben,
Because sentence against an euill worke is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the children of men is fully set in them to doe euill.
12 weil hundertmal der Sünder Böses tut und trotzdem lange lebt. Doch weiß ich auch: Den Gottesfürchtigen allein geht's gut, weil sie vor Ihm sich fürchten.
Though a sinner doe euill an hundreth times, and God prolongeth his dayes, yet I knowe that it shalbe well with them that feare the Lord, and doe reuerence before him.
13 Dem Frevler aber geht's nicht gut, ob er auch, einem Schatten gleich, die Lebensfrist verlängert, weil er sich vor Gott nicht fürchtet. -
But it shall not be well to the wicked, neither shall he prolong his dayes: he shall be like a shadowe, because he feareth not before God.
14 Auf Erden gibt's noch etwas Eitles. Gerechte gibt's und diesen geht's, wie's Frevlern gehen sollte, und Frevler gibt's, und diesen geht's, wie's Frommen gehen sollte. Ich sprach: "Auch dies ist eitel." -
There is a vanitie, which is done vpon the earth, that there be righteous men to whom it commeth according to the worke of the wicked: and there be wicked men to whom it commeth according to the worke of the iust: I thought also that this is vanitie.
15 Da pries ich laut die Freude, weil's für den Menschen gar nichts Besseres unter dieser Sonne gibt, als daß er esse, trinke und sich freue, und er verbinde dies mit seiner Arbeit während seiner Lebenszeit, die ihm die Gottheit unter dieser Sonne schenkt!
And I praysed ioy: for there is no goodnesse to man vnder the sunne, saue to eate and to drinke and to reioyce: for this is adioyned to his labour, the dayes of his life that God hath giuen him vnder the sunne.
16 Als ich mein Herz darauf gerichtet, die Weisheit zu erkennen Und zu betrachten all das Treiben, das auf Erden vor sich geht, wie man dabei den Schlaf nicht sieht, am Tage nicht und nicht bei Nacht,
When I applied mine heart to knowe wisedome, and to behold the busines that is done on earth, that neither day nor night the eyes of man take sleepe,
17 da sah ich ein: Der Gottheit Walten ganz und gar kann nie ein Mensch ergründen, das Walten nämlich, das unter dieser Sonne vor sich geht. Wie sehr der Mensch sich müht, es aufzusuchen, er kann es nicht ergründen. Selbst wenn der Weise meint, es zu erkennen, er kann es nicht ergründen.
Then I behelde the whole worke of God, that man cannot finde out ye worke that is wrought vnder the sunne: for the which man laboureth to seeke it, and cannot finde it: yea, and though the wise man thinke to knowe it, he cannot finde it.
