Prediger 10

1 Vertilgt man giftige Fliegen, läßt man duftend Öl vergießen. So kann ein wenig Torheit auch begehrter sein als Weisheit und als Würde. -

fly death to stink to bubble oil to mix precious from wisdom from glory folly little

2 Der Weise hat zur Rechten den Verstand, der Tor zur Linken.

heart wise to/for right his and heart fool to/for left his

3 Selbst auf der Reise, die ein Tölpel unternimmt, zeigt sein Verstand sich als beschränkt und sagt es jedem, er sei ein Narr.

4 Wenn gegen dich des Herrschers Unmut sich erhebt, verlaß nicht deine Stellung! Gelassenheit kann große Frevel unterdrücken. -

5 Doch kaum ein Übel ist - ich sah es unter dieser Sonne - so groß wie das Versehen eines Herrschers.

6 Die Torheit wird zu hohen Stellungen erhoben, und Edle müssen in der Niedrigkeit verweilen.

7 Zu Pferde sah ich Sklaven, und Fürsten gingen Sklaven gleich zu Fuß.

8 Wer eine Grube gräbt, fällt leicht hinein. Wer eine Mauer einreißt, den sticht leicht die Schlange.

9 Wer Steine bricht, verletzt sich leicht daran. Wer Holz zerspaltet, bringt dabei gar leicht sich in Gefahr. -

10 Hat man das Eisen stumpf gemacht und schleift man nicht die Schneide, dann muß man seine Kräfte mehr anstrengen. Ein Vorteil ist's, die Klugheit richtig anzuwenden.

11 Wenn eine Schlange sticht, bevor es zur Beschwörung kommt, dann nützt es nichts, ist man ein Meister im Beschwören.

12 Die Worte aus des Weisen Mund sind anmutsvoll; in Widerspruch verwickeln sich des Toren Lippen.

13 Der Anfang seiner Worte ist schon Torheit; das letzte Wort aus seinem Munde schlimmste Tollheit.

14 Der Narr macht nämlich viele Worte: "Der Mensch weiß nicht, was kommen wird. Was späterhin geschieht, wer kündet's ihm?"

15 Die Arbeit mit den Toren macht ihn müde, ihn, der es nicht versteht, in Heiterkeit zu wandeln. -

16 Weh dir, du Land, des König ist ein Unfreier und dessen Fürsten schon am Morgen schmausen! -

17 Heil dir, du Land, des König ist ein freier Mann und dessen Fürsten tafeln stets zur rechten Zeit, als Helden, aber nicht als Zecher!

blessed you land: country/planet which/that king your son: child noble and ruler your in/on/with time to eat in/on/with might and not in/on/with drunkenness

18 Da, wo man faulenzt, senkt sich das Gebälk, und wo die Hände lässig, trieft das Haus. -

19 In Ausgelassenheit verwandeln sie die Speisen und den Wein, der sonst die Lebenden erquickt, und alles offenbart das Geld. -

20 Auch nicht in deinem Zimmer fluch dem König je! In deinem Schlafgemach beschimpfe keinen Reichen! Des Himmels Vögel könnten ja den Laut entführen und die Gefiederten das Wort verbreiten. -
