1 "Wir machten kehrt, zogen nach der Steppe auf das Schilfmeer zu, wie der Herr zu mir gesagt, und kreisten lange Zeit um das Gebirge Seïr.
Then we turned, and took our journey into the wilderness by the way of the Red Sea, as the Lord had spoken unto me: and we traveled around mount Seir many days.
2 Da sprach der Herr zu mir:
And the Lord said unto me, as followeth,
3 'Genug eures Kreisens um dieses Gebirge! Wendet euch nach Norden!
Ye have traveled long enough around this mountain; turn yourselves northward.
4 Dem Volke befiehl also: "Ihr wollt durch das Gebiet der Söhne Esaus ziehen, eurer Brüder, die in Seïr wohnen. Sie werden euch fürchten. Aber nehmt euch in acht!
And the people command thou, saying, Ye are passing by the border of your brethren the children of Esau, who dwell in Seir; and they will be afraid of you; therefore take ye good heed unto yourselves;
5 Befehdet sie nicht! Ich gebe euch keinen Fußbreit von ihrem Land; denn ich habe Esau das Gebirge Seïr zum Besitz verliehen.
Do not contend with them; for I will not give unto you of their land, even so much as a foot's breadth; because unto Esau have I given mount Seir for an inheritance.
6 Ihr sollt ihnen für Geld Speise abkaufen, die ihr eßt, und Wasser von ihnen erhandeln, das ihr trinkt!'
Food shall ye buy of them for money, that ye may eat; and water also shall ye buy of them for money, that ye may drink.
7 Der Herr, dein Gott, hat dich ja gesegnet in all deinem Händewerk. Er sorgt für deinen Marsch durch diese große Steppe. Vierzig Jahre ist der Herr, dein Gott, mit dir. Dir hat nichts gefehlt.
For the Lord thy God hath blessed thee in all the works of thy hand; he hath provided for thy wandering through this great wilderness: these forty years the Lord thy God hath been with thee; thou hast lacked nothing.
8 Wir zogen vorüber an unseren Brüdern, den Söhnen Esaus zu Seïr, auf der Arabastraße, vorüber an Elat und Esiongeber. Wir wandten uns und zogen auf Moabs Steppe zu.
And we passed away from our brethren the children of Esau, who dwell in Seir, from the way through the plain, from Elath, and from 'Ezyon-gaber. And we turned and passed the way of the wilderness of Moab.
9 Da sprach der Herr zu mir: 'Befehde nicht die Moabiter! Stürze dich in keinen Kampf mit ihnen! Ich gebe dir ja von ihrem Lande nichts zu eigen; denn ich habe Ar den Söhnen Lots zum Besitz verliehen.'
And the Lord said unto me, Do not attack the Moabites, nor contend with them in battle; for I will not give thee from their land any inheritance, because unto the children of Lot have I given 'Ar for an inheritance.
10 Vordem wohnten die Emiter darin, ein Volk, so groß, zahlreich und hochgewachsen wie die Enakiter.
The Emim in times past dwelt therein, a people great, and numerous, and tall as the 'Anakim;
11 Auch sie gelten als Rephaiter, wie die Enakiter. Die Moabiter nennen sie Emiter.
As Rephaim were also they accounted, equally with the 'Anakim; and the Moabites called the[[m]] Emim.
12 In Seïr saßen vordem die Choriter. Die Esausöhne aber besiegten und vertilgten sie und siedelten an ihrer Stelle, wie Israel mit dem Land getan, das ihm der Herr zu eigen gegeben.
And in Seir dwelt the Chorim in times past; but the children of Esau drove them out, and they destroyed them from before them, and dwelt in their stead; as Israel hath done unto the land of his inheritance, which the Lord hath given unto them.
13 'Nun auf! Setzt über den Zaredbach!' Da überschritten wir den Bach Zared.
Now rise up, and get you over the brook Zered; and we passed over the brook Zered.
14 Wir sind achtunddreißig Jahre unterwegs gewesen, von Kades Barnea bis zur Überschreitung des Zaredbaches. Bis dahin war das ganze Geschlecht der Kriegsmänner aus dem Lager weggestorben, wie es ihnen der Herr geschworen hatte.
And the time which we came from Kadesh-barnea', until we had passed over the brook Zered, was thirty and eight years; until all the generation of the men of war were spent from out the midst of the camp, as the Lord had sworn unto them.
15 Die Hand des Herrn war aber gegen sie gewesen, um sie voll aus dem Lager zu vertilgen.
And also the hand of the Lord was against them, to destroy them from the midst of the camp; until they were spent.
16 Als alle Kriegsmänner aus dem Volke weggestorben waren,
So it came to pass, when all the men of war were spent by, dying from the midst of the people,
17 sprach der Herr zu mir:
That the Lord spoke unto me, saying,
18 'Du ziehst heute durch die Grenzmark Moabs und an Ar vorüber
Thou art passing this day by the border of Moab, by 'Ar,
19 und näherst dich den Ammonitem. Befehde und befeinde sie nicht! Ich gebe dir ja vom Ammoniterlande nichts zu eigen; denn ich habe es den Söhnen Lots zu eigen gegeben.'
And thou comest nigh opposite the children of 'Ammon: do not attack them, nor contend with them; for I will not give unto thee of the land of the children of 'Ammon any inheritance; because unto the children of Lot have I given it for an inheritance.
20 Es gilt auch als Rephaiterland. Vordem wohnten darin Rephaiter, von den Ammonitern Samsummiter genannt.
As the land of Rephaim was it also accounted: Rephaim dwelt therein in times past; and the 'Ammonites called them Zamzummim;
21 Leute waren es, so groß, zahlreich und hochgewachsen wie die Enakiter. Der Herr aber vertilgte sie vor ihnen. Und so nahmen sie ihr Land und siedelten an ihrer Stelle.
A people great, and numerous, and tall, as the 'Anakim; but the Lord destroyed them before them; and they drove them out, and dwelt in their stead:
22 So hatte er auch für die Esausöhne zu Seïr getan. Vor ihnen vertilgte er die Choriter. So nahmen sie ihr Land und wohnten an ihrer Stelle bis auf den heutigen Tag.
As he hath done to the children of Esau, who dwell in Seir, from before whom he destroyed the Chorim; and they drove them out and dwelt in their stead, even unto this day.
23 Auch die Awwiter, die in Gehöften bis nach Gaza wohnten, waren vernichtet worden durch die Kaphtoriter, die aus Kaphtor auswanderten, und diese siedelten an ihrer Stelle.
And the 'Avvim, who dwelt in open towns, as far as unto Gazzah, —the Caphtorim, who came forth out of Caphtor, destroyed them, and dwelt in their stead.
24 'Auf! Zieht hin und setzt über den Arnonbach! Siehe! Ich gebe in deine Hand den Amoriter Sichon, Chesbons König, mit seinem Lande. Fang an mit dem Erobern! Greif sie an!
Rise ye up, set forward, and pass over the brook Arnon; behold I have given into thy hand Sichon the king of Cheshbon, the Emorite, and his land: begin to drive him out, and contend with him in battle.
25 Von jetzt an breite ich Furcht und Schrecken vor dir auf die Völker unter dem ganzen Himmel. Sobald sie von dir hören, sollen sie vor dir zittern und beben.'
This day will I begin to put the dread of thee and the fear of thee upon the nations that are under the whole heaven; whoever will hear the report of thee, shall tremble, and shall quake because of thee.
26 Da sandte ich von der Steppe Kedemot Boten an Chesbons König Sichon mit friedlichen Worten:
And I sent messengers out of the wilderness of Kedemoth unto Sichon, the king of Cheshbon, with words of peace, saying,
27 'Ich möchte dein Land durchziehen, will aber nur auf der Straße bleiben und weder rechts noch links abbiegen.
Let me pass through thy land: always by the highway will I go along; I will not turn unto the right hand or unto the left.
28 Speise sollst du mir um Geld verkaufen, damit ich esse, und Wasser um Geld mir geben, damit ich trinke! Ich will nur durchziehen.'
Food shalt thou sell me for money, that I may eat; and water for money shalt thou give me, that I may drink: only let me pass through on foot;
29 Dies haben mir die Esausöhne zu Seïr und die Moabiter zu Ar gestattet, bis ich über den Jordan in das Land ziehe, das der Herr, unser Gott, uns geben will.
(As the children of Esau who dwell in Seir, and the Moabites who dwell in 'Ar, have done unto me: ) until that I shall pass over the Jordan into the land which the Lord our God giveth us.
30 Doch Chesbons König, Sichon, wollte uns nicht durchziehen lassen; denn der Herr, dein Gott, hatte seinen Sinn verhärtet und sein Herz verstockt, um ihn in deine Hand zu geben, wie es jetzt ist.
But Sichon, the king of Cheshbon, would not suffer our passing by him; for the Lord thy God had hardened his spirit, and had made obstinate his heart, that he might deliver him into thy hand, as [hath happened] this day.
31 Da sprach der Herr zu mir: 'Siehe! Ich mache den Anfang damit, daß ich dir Sichon und sein Land preisgebe. Fang an, sein Land zu besetzen!'
And the Lord said unto me, Behold, I have begun to give up Sichon and his land before thee: begin to drive him out, that thou mayest inherit his land.
32 Und Sichon zog uns mit seinem gesamten Volke zum Streite nach Jahas entgegen.
And Sichon came out against us, he and all his people, to the battle at Yahaz.
33 Da gab ihn der Herr, unser Gott, uns preis. Wir schlugen ihn samt seinen Söhnen und seinem ganzen Volke.
And the Lord our God gave him up before us; and we smote him, and his sons, and all his people.
34 Damals nahmen wir auch alle seine Städte und bannten jede Stadt, selbst schwächliche Männer, Weiber und Kinder. Niemanden haben wir entrinnen lassen.
And we conquered all his cities at that time, and devoted every inhabited city, and the women, and the little ones; we left none that escaped.
35 Nur das Vieh und das Plündergut der von uns eroberten Städte haben wir für uns erbeutet.
Only the cattle we took as booty unto ourselves, and the spoil of the cities which we had captured.
36 Von Aroër am Ufer des Arnonflusses und von der Stadt im Tale bis nach Gilead ist keine Feste uns zu steil gewesen. Alles hat der Herr, unser Gott, uns preisgegeben.
From 'Aro'er, which is by the bank of the brook of Arnon, and the city that is in the brook, even unto Gil'ad, there was not one city which was too strong for us; the whole did the Lord our God give up before us.
37 Nur dem Ammoniterlande bist du nicht genaht, allem, was seitwärts vom Jabbokflusse liegt, samt den Städten im Gebirge, wie der Herr, unser Gott, befohlen hatte."
Only unto the land of the children of 'Ammon didst thou not come nigh, unto the whole margin of the brook Yabbok, and the cities in the mountain, and unto whatsoever the Lord our God had forbidden us.
