3 Johannes 1
1 Der Presbyter an den geliebten Gajus, den ich in Wahrheit liebe.
From the elder to his dear friend Gaius, whom he sincerely loves.
2 Geliebtester! Ich wünsche, daß es dir in allem wohlergehe und daß du dich gesund befinden mögest, so wie es deiner Seele wirklich wohl ergeht.
Dear friend, I pray that all may be well with you and that you may have good health – I know that all is well with your soul.
3 Ich habe mich gar sehr gefreut, als Brüder kamen und deine Treue rühmten, mit der du in der Wahrheit wandelst.
For it was a great joy to me, when some followers of the Lord came and testified to your fidelity to the truth. I know that your own life is guided by the truth.
4 Ich kenne keine größere Freude, als zu hören, daß meine Kinder in der Wahrheit wandeln.
Nothing gives me greater pleasure than to hear from time to time that the lives of my children are guided by the truth.
5 Geliebtester! Getreu in allem handelst du, was immer du an den Brüdern tust, und dies an fremden.
Dear friend, you are faithful in all the things you do for other followers – even when they are strangers to you.
6 Sie rühmen dich ob solcher Liebe laut vor der Gemeinde, und trefflich handelst du, wenn du sie weiter förderst, so wie es Gottes würdig ist.
They themselves have testified before the church to your love. You will do well to help them on their way in a manner worthy of the service of God.
7 Sie sind ja um des Namens willen ausgezogen und haben nichts von den Heiden angenommen.
For it was on behalf of Christ’s name that they set out, not accepting even one thing from the Gentiles.
8 So ist es denn nur unsere Pflicht, uns solcher Männer anzunehmen; wir werden dadurch ihre Mitarbeiter für die Wahrheit sein.
Therefore, we should support people like them, and so take our share in their work for the truth.
9 Ich habe auch etwas an die Gemeinde selbst geschrieben; allein Diotrephes, der gern den Ersten unter ihnen spielt, erkennt uns nicht an.
I wrote something to the church, but Diotrephes (who loves to be the leader among them) doesn’t welcome us.
10 Darum will ich, wenn ich komme, sein Treiben zur Sprache bringen, wie er mit bösen Worten uns verdächtigt und, damit nicht zufrieden, die Brüder selbst nicht aufnimmt und denen, die sie gastfrei halten, wehrt, ja, sie sogar aus der Gemeinde ausschließt.
So if I come, I will bring up his actions in telling wicked nonsense about us. Not content with that, he not only refuses to personally welcome our friends who are followers, but actually stops those who would, and expels them from the church.
11 Geliebtester! Ahme nicht das Böse nach, vielmehr das Gute! Wer Gutes tut, ist aus Gott; wer aber Böses tut, hat Gott nicht gesehen.
Dear friend, do not follow a bad example, but a good one. The person who does what is good is from God; the person who does what is bad has never seen God.
12 Von allen erhält Demetrius ein gutes Zeugnis, auch von der Wahrheit selber. Auch wir bezeugen so, und unser Zeugnis ist, du weißt es, wahr.
Everyone has always had a good word for Demetrius, and the truth itself speaks for him. Yes, and we also add our good word, and you know that what we say is true.
13 Noch vieles hätte ich dir zu schreiben; doch wollte ich es nicht mit Tinte und Feder tun.
I have many things to tell you, but I would rather not use pen and ink.
14 Ich hoffe nämlich, dich bald zu sehen; dann werden wir uns mündlich sprechen. Friede sei mit dir! Die Freunde grüßen dich. Grüße auch du die Freunde, einen jeden einzeln!
