1 Die Prophetensöhne aber sprachen zu Elisäus: "Der Ort, an dem wir bei dir wohnen, ist uns zu eng.
And sons of the prophet say unto Elisha, 'Lo, we pray thee, the place where we are dwelling before thee is too strait for us;
2 Wir wollen an den Jordan gehen. Dort hole jeder einen Balken! Und wir schaffen uns eine Stätte zum Wohnen." Er sprach: "Geht hin!"
let us go, we pray thee, unto the Jordan, and we take thence each one beam, and we make for ourselves there a place to dwell there;' and he saith, 'Go.'
3 Einer aber sprach: "Sei so gut und gehe mit deinen Dienern!" Er sprach: "Gut! Ich gehe mit."
And the one saith, 'Be pleased, I pray thee, and go with thy servants;' and he saith, 'I — I go.'
4 So ging er mit ihnen. Da kamen sie an den Jordan und fällten Bäume.
And he goeth with them, and they come in to the Jordan, and cut down the trees,
5 Als einer an einem Balken hieb, fiel ihm das Eisen ins Wasser. Er schrie und rief: "Ach, mein Herr! Und dazu ist es entlehnt."
and it cometh to pass, the one is felling the beam, and the iron hath fallen into the water, and he crieth and saith, 'Alas! my lord, and it asked!'
6 Da fragte der Gottesmann: "Wohin ist es gefallen?" Da wies er ihm die Stelle. Nun schnitzte er ein Holz und warf es dorthin. Da schwamm das Eisen herbei.
And the man of God saith, 'Whither hath it fallen?' and he sheweth him the place, and he cutteth a stick, and casteth thither, and causeth the iron to swim,
7 Er sprach: "Hol's dir herauf!" Da streckte er seine Hand aus und holte es. -
and saith, 'Raise to thee;' and he putteth forth his hand and taketh it.
8 Der König von Aram fing mit Israel Krieg an. Da beriet er sich mit seinen Dienern und sprach: "An dem und dem Ort sei mein Lager!"
And the king of Aram hath been fighting against Israel, and taketh counsel with his servants, saying, 'At such and such a place [is] my encamping.'
9 Da sandte der Gottesmann zum König von Israel und ließ sagen: "Hüte dich, an diesem Ort vorüberzuziehen! Denn dort liegen die Aramäer im Hinterhalt."
And the man of God sendeth unto the king of Israel, saying, 'Take heed of passing by this place, for thither are the Aramaeans coming down;
10 Da sandte der König von Israel an den Ort, den ihm der Gottesmann genannt hatte. So warnte er ihn. Und er beobachtete dort, nicht bloß ein- oder zweimal.
and the king of Israel sendeth unto the place of which the man of God spake to him, and warned him, and he is preserved there not once nor twice.
11 Darüber ward der König von Aram aufgeregt. Er rief seine Diener und sagte zu ihnen: "Könnt ihr mir nicht sagen, wer von uns es mit dem König von Israel hält!"
And the heart of the king of Aram is tossed about concerning this thing, and he calleth unto his servants, and saith unto them, 'Do ye not declare to me who of us [is] for the king of Israel?'
12 Da sprach einer seiner Diener: "Nicht doch! Mein Herr, König! Der Prophet Elisäus in Israel teilt dem König von Israel die Worte mit, die du in deinem Schlafgemach sprichst."
And one of his servants saith, 'Nay, my lord, O king, for Elisha the prophet, who [is] in Israel, declareth to the king of Israel the words that thou speakest in the inner part of thy bed-chamber.'
13 Da sprach er: "Geht und seht, wo er ist, daß ich schicke und ihn holen lasse!" Da ward ihm gemeldet: "Er ist in Dotan."
And he saith, 'Go ye and see where he [is], and I send and take him;' and it is declared to him, saying, 'Lo — in Dothan.'
14 Da sandte er dorthin Rosse, Wagen und eine starke Kriegerschar. Sie kamen bei Nacht und umzingelten die Stadt.
And he sendeth thither horses and chariot, and a heavy force, and they come in by night, and go round against the city.
15 Der Diener des Gottesmannes aber stand in der Frühe auf und trat hinaus. Da lag eine Kriegerschar rings um die Stadt mit Rossen und Wagen. Sein Diener sprach zu ihm: "Wehe, mein Herr! Was sollen wir tun?"
And the servant of the man of God riseth early, and goeth out, and lo, a force is surrounding the city, and horse and chariot, and his young man saith unto him, 'Alas! my lord, how do we do?'
16 Er sprach: "Fürchte nichts! Denn mehr sind der Unsrigen als der Ihrigen."
And he saith, 'Fear not, for more [are] they who [are] with us than they who [are] with them.'
17 Und Elisäus betete und sprach: "Herr, öffne ihm die Augen, daß er sehe!" Da öffnete der Herr dem Diener die Augen, und er sah den Berg voll von feurigen Rossen und Wagen rings um Elisäus.
And Elisha prayeth, and saith, 'Jehovah, open, I pray Thee, his eyes, and he doth see;' and Jehovah openeth the eyes of the young man, and he seeth, and lo, the hill is full of horses and chariots of fire, round about Elisha.
18 Als sie nun gegen ihn anrückten, betete Elisäus zum Herrn und sprach: "Schlage dieses Kriegsvolk mit Blindheit!" Da schlug er sie mit Blindheit nach des Elisäus Wort.
And they come down unto it, and Elisha prayeth unto Jehovah, and saith, 'Smite, I pray Thee, this nation with blindness;' and He smiteth them with blindness, according to the word of Elisha.
19 Dann sprach Elisäus zu ihnen: "Dies ist nicht der Weg und dies ist nicht die Stadt. Folgt mir! Ich führe euch zu dem Mann, den ihr suchet." Da führte er sie nach Samaria.
And Elisha saith unto them, 'This [is] not the way, nor [is] this the city; come after me, and I lead you unto the man whom ye seek;' and he leadeth them to Samaria.
20 Als sie nach Samaria gekommen waren, sprach Elisäus: "Herr, öffne diesen die Augen, daß sie sehen!" Da öffnete ihnen der Herr die Augen, und sie sahen sich mitten in Samaria.
And it cometh to pass, at their coming in to Samaria, that Elisha saith, 'Jehovah, open the eyes of these, and they see;' and Jehovah openeth their eyes, and they see, and lo, in the midst of Samaria!
21 Da sprach der König von Israel zu Elisäus, als er sie sah: "Soll ich dreinschlagen lassen, mein Vater?"
And the king of Israel saith unto Elisha, at his seeing them, 'Do I smite — do I smite — my father?'
22 Da sprach er: "Nein! Willst du solche, die du nicht mit deinem Schwert und Bogen gefangennimmst, niederschlagen? Setz ihnen Brot und Wasser vor, daß sie essen und trinken! Dann mögen sie zu ihrem Herrn ziehen!"
And he saith, 'Thou dost not smite; those whom thou hast taken captive with thy sword and with thy bow art thou smiting? set bread and water before them, and they eat, and drink, and go unto their lord.'
23 Da ließ er für sie ein großes Mahl herrichten, und sie aßen und tranken. Dann entließ er sie, und sie zogen zu ihrem Herrn. Seitdem kamen keine aramäischen Streitscharen mehr ins Land Israel.
And he prepareth for them great provision, and they eat and drink, and he sendeth them away, and they go unto their lord: and troops of Aram have not added any more to come in to the land of Israel.
24 Hernach zog Arams König Benhadad sein ganzes Heer zusammen. Er zog heran und belagerte Samaria.
And it cometh to pass afterwards, that Ben-Hadad king of Aram gathereth all his camp, and goeth up, and layeth siege to Samaria,
25 Da ward eine große Hungersnot in Samaria, als jene es belagerten, bis ein Eselskopf achtzig Silberlinge galt und ein Viertelmaß Vogelmilch fünf Silberlinge.
and there is a great famine in Samaria, and lo, they are laying siege to it, till the head of an ass is at eighty silverlings, and a forth of the cab of dovesdung at five silverlings.
26 Als nun der König von Israel die Mauern untersuchte, schrie ein Weib ihn an und sprach: "Hilf doch, mein Herr, König!"
And it cometh to pass, the king of Israel is passing by on the wall, and a woman hath cried unto him, saying, 'Save, my lord, O king.'
27 Er sprach: "Hilft dir der Herr nicht? Woher sollte ich dir helfen können? Von der Tenne oder von der Kelter?"
And he saith, 'Jehovah doth not save thee — whence do I save thee? out of the threshing-floor, or out of the wine-vat?'
28 Dann sprach der König zu ihr: "Was hast du?" Da sprach sie: "Das Weib da sprach zu mir: 'Gib deinen Sohn her, daß wir ihn heute verzehren! Morgen wollen wir meinen Sohn verzehren.'
And the king saith to her, 'What — to thee?' and she saith, 'This woman said unto me, Give thy son, and we eat him to-day, and my son we eat to-morrow;
29 So kochten wir meinen Sohn und verzehrten ihn. Da sprach ich zu ihr am anderen Tage: 'Gib deinen Sohn her, daß wir ihn essen!' Da versteckte sie ihren Sohn."
and we boil my son and eat him, and I say unto her on the next day, Give thy son, and we eat him; and she hideth her son.'
30 Als aber der König die Worte des Weibes vernahm, zerriß er seine Kleider. Er untersuchte eben die Mauer. Da sah das Volk, daß er darunter ein Bußgewand auf seinem Leib hatte.
And it cometh to pass, at the king's hearing the words of the woman, that he rendeth his garments, and he is passing by on the wall, and the people see, and lo, the sackcloth [is] on his flesh within.
31 Er sprach: "Gott tue mir das und das, wenn des Saphatsohnes Elisäus Haupt noch heute auf ihm bleibt!"
And he saith, 'Thus doth God do to me, and thus He doth add — if it remain — the head of Elisha son of Shaphat — upon him this day.'
32 Elisäus aber saß in seinem Hause, und die Ältesten saßen bei ihm. Jener aber sandte einen Mann vor sich her. Bevor aber der Bote zu ihm kam, sprach er zu den Ältesten: "Wißt ihr, daß dieser Mördersohn herschickt, mir den Kopf abzuschlagen? Seht zu! Sobald der Bote kommt, schließt die Tür und stemmt euch mit der Tür gegen ihn! Ist nicht der Schall der Tritte seines Herrn hinter ihm zu hören?"
And Elisha is sitting in his house, and the elders are sitting with him, and [the king] sendeth a man from before him; before the messenger doth come unto him, even he himself said unto the elders, 'Have ye seen that this son of the murderer hath sent to turn aside my head? see, at the coming in of the messenger, shut the door, and ye have held him fast at the door, is not the sound of the feet of his lord behind him?'
33 Noch redete er mit ihnen, da kam der König zu ihm herab. Er sprach: "Das ist das Schlimmste vom Herrn. Was warte ich noch länger auf den Herrn?"
He is yet speaking with them, and lo, the messenger is coming down unto him, and he saith, 'Lo, this [is] the evil from Jehovah: what — do I wait for Jehovah any more?'
