1 Da sandte der König hin, und man versammelte bei ihm alle Ältesten Judas und Jerusalems.

So the king sent messengers who gathered to him all the elders of Judah and of Jerusalem.

2 Dann ging der König zum Hause des Herrn hinauf, mit ihm alle Männer Judas und alle Einwohner Jerusalems, ebenso die Priester und Propheten sowie das ganze Volk, groß und klein. Nun las er vor ihren Ohren alle Worte des Bundesbuches vor, das im Hause des Herrn gefunden worden.

Then the king went up to the house of Yahweh, and all the men of Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem with him, and the priests, prophets, and all the people, from small to great. He then read in their hearing all the words of the book of the Covenant that had been found in the house of Yahweh.

3 Dann trat der König an die Säule und schloß vor dem Herrn den Bund, dem Herrn nachzufolgen und seine Gebote, Gebräuche und Satzungen von ganzem Herzen und aus ganzer Seele zu beobachten und so dieses Bundes Worte, die in diesem Buch standen, zu erfüllen. Alles Volk trat in den Bund.

The king stood by the pillar and made a covenant before Yahweh, to walk after Yahweh and to keep his commandments, his regulations, and his statutes, with all his heart and all his soul, to confirm the words of this covenant that were written in this book. So all the people agreed to stand by the covenant.

4 Der König gebot nun dem Hohenpriester Chilkia, dem zweiten Priester und den Schwellenhütern, aus dem Tempel des Herrn alle Geräte hinauszuschaffen, die für den Baal, die Aschera und das ganze Himmelsheer gemacht waren. Dann verbrannte er sie außerhalb Jerusalems in den Fluren am Kidron. Ihren Staub aber brachte er nach Betel.

The king commanded Hilkiah the high priest, the priests under him, and the gatekeepers to bring out of the temple of Yahweh all the vessels that were made for Baal and Asherah, and for all the stars of heaven. He burned them outside Jerusalem in the fields in the Kidron Valley and carried their ashes to Bethel.

5 Auch entfernte er die Götzenpriester, die die Könige Judas eingesetzt hatten und die auf den Höhen in Judas Städten und in Jerusalems Umgebung räucherten, ebenso die, die dem Baal, der Sonne, dem Mond und den Tierkreisbildern räucherten, sowie dem ganzen Himmelsheer.

He got rid of the idolatrous priests whom the kings of Judah had chosen to burn incense at the high places in the cities of Judah and in the places around Jerusalem—those who burned incense to Baal, to the sun and the moon, to the planets, and to all the stars of heaven.

6 Er schaffte die Aschera aus dem Hause des Herrn vor Jerusalem hinaus ins Kidrontal. Er verbrannte sie im Kidrontale, zermalmte sie zu Staub und warf ihren Staub hier auf die Gräber der gemeinen Leute.

He brought out the Asherah pole from the temple of Yahweh, outside Jerusalem to the Kidron Valley and burned it there. He beat it to dust and threw that dust onto the graves of the common people.

7 Er vernichtete die Geschenke der Tempeldirnen im Hause des Herrn, wo die Weiber Geschenke für die Aschera webten.

He cleared out the rooms of the cultic prostitutes who were in the temple of Yahweh, where the women wove garments for Asherah.

8 Dann ließ er aus Judas Städten alle Priester kommen und verunreinigte die Höhen, auf denen die Priester räucherten, von Geba bis Beerseba. Auch riß er die Höhen der Bocksgestalten nieder am Eingang zum Tor des Stadthauptmanns Josue, links am Stadttor.

Josiah brought all the priests out of the cities of Judah and defiled the high places where the priests had burned incense, from Geba to Beersheba. He destroyed the high places at the gates that were at the entrance to the gate of Joshua (the city governor), on the left side of the city gate.

9 Die Höhenpriester aber hatten keinen Teil mehr an dem Altar des Herrn zu Jerusalem, sondern mußten inmitten ihrer Brüder gewöhnliches Brot essen.

Although the priests of those high places were not allowed to serve at the altar of Yahweh in Jerusalem, they ate unleavened bread among their brothers.

10 Er verunreinigte auch das Tophet im Hinnomstal, daß keiner mehr seinen Sohn und seine Tochter für den Moloch durchs Feuer führte.

Josiah defiled Topheth, which is in the Valley of Ben Hinnom, so that no one might cause his son or his daughter to pass through the fire as a sacrifice to Molech.

11 Dann beseitigte er die Rosse, die Judas Könige der Sonne aufgestellt hatten, am Eingang ins Haus des Herrn, und zwar bei der Zelle des Kämmerers Netanmelek in den Festungstürmen. Die Wagen der Sonne aber verbrannte er.

He took away the horses that the kings of Judah had given to the sun. They had been in an area at the entrance to the temple of Yahweh, near the room of Nathan-Melek, the chamberlain. Josiah burned the chariots of the sun.

12 Die Altäre auf dem Dache am Söller des Achaz, die Judas Könige gemacht hatten, ebenso die Altäre, die Manasse in den beiden Vorhöfen im Hause des Herrn gemacht hatte, brach der König ab und zertrümmerte sie dort. Ihren Schutt warf er in das Kidrontal.

Josiah the king destroyed the altars that were on the roof of the upper chamber of Ahaz, which the kings of Judah had made, and the altars that Manasseh had made in the two courts of the temple of Yahweh. Josiah smashed them into pieces and threw them into the Kidron Valley.

13 Auch die Höhen östlich von Jerusalem und südlich vom Ölberg, die Israels König Salomo dem sidonischen Scheusal Astarte, dem moabitischen Scheusal Kamos und dem ammonitischen Greuel Milkom gebaut, verunreinigte der König.

The king ruined the high places east of Jerusalem, south of the mount of corruption that Solomon the king of Israel had built for Ashtoreth, the detestable idol of the Sidonians; for Chemosh, the detestable idol of Moab; and for Molech, the detestable idol of the people of Ammon.

14 Auch zerbrach er die Steinmale, fällte die Ascheren und füllte ihre Stelle mit Menschengebeinen an.

He broke the stone pillars into pieces and cut down the Asherah poles and he filled those places with the bones of human beings.

15 Auch den Altar zu Betel, die Höhe, die Nebats Sohn Jeroboam, der Israel zur Sünde verführt, gemacht hatte, auch diesen Altar samt der Höhe brach er ab. Dann verbrannte er die Höhe, zermalmte sie zu Staub und verbrannte die Aschera.

Josiah also completely destroyed the altar that was at Bethel and the high place that Jeroboam son of Nebat (the one who made Israel to sin) had constructed. He also burned that altar and the high place and beat it to dust. He also burned the Asherah pole.

16 Als sich Josias umsah, erblickte er die Gräber, die dort auf dem Berge waren. Da ließ er die Gebeine aus den Gräbern holen, verbrannte sie auf dem Altar und verunreinigte ihn nach des Herrn Wort, das der Gottesmann kundgetan hatte, der diese Dinge verkündete.

As Josiah looked over the area, he noticed the graves that were on the hillside. He sent men to take the bones from the graves; then he burned them on the altar, which defiled it. This was according to the word of Yahweh which the man of God had spoken, the man who spoke of these things beforehand.

17 Er fragte: "Was für ein Grabmal sehe ich da?" Da sagten die Leute der Stadt zu ihm: "Das ist das Grab des Gottesmannes, der von Juda gekommen ist und dann diese Dinge, die du tust, über den Altar in Betel verkündete."

Then he said, “What monument is that I see?” The men of the city told him, “That is the grave of the man of God who came from Judah and spoke about these things that you have just done against the altar of Bethel.”

18 Er sprach: "Laßt ihn! Niemand beunruhige seine Gebeine!" So retteten seine Gebeine die Gebeine des Propheten, der aus Samaria stammte.

So Josiah said, “Let it alone. No one should move his bones.” So they let his bones alone, along with the bones of the prophet who had come from Samaria.

19 Auch beseitigte Josias alle Höhenhäuser, die in Samarias Städten waren und die Israels Könige zur Kränkung gemacht hatten. Er tat mit ihnen ganz so, wie er in Betel getan.

Then Josiah removed all the houses on the high places that were in the cities of Samaria, which the kings of Israel had made, and that provoked Yahweh to anger. He did to them exactly what had been done at Bethel.

20 Er opferte alle Höhenpriester dort auf den Altären und verbrannte darauf Menschengebeine. Dann kehrte er nach Jerusalem heim.

He slaughtered all the priests of the high places on the altars and he burned human bones on them. Then he returned to Jerusalem.

21 Der König befahl nun allem Volke: "Haltet dem Herrn, eurem Gott, ein Passah, wie es in diesem Bundesbuche geschrieben steht!"

Then the king commanded all the people, saying, “Keep the Passover to Yahweh your God, as it is written in this Book of the Covenant.”

22 Denn ein solches Passah war nicht mehr gehalten worden seit den Tagen der Richter, die Israel gerichtet hatten, noch in irgendeiner Zeit der Könige Israels und Judas.

Such a Passover celebration had never been held from the days of the judges who ruled Israel, nor in all the days of the kings of Israel or Judah.

23 Erst im achtzehnten Jahre des Königs Josias ward dem Herrn zu Jerusalem das Passah gehalten.

But in the eighteenth year of King Josiah this Passover of Yahweh was celebrated in Jerusalem.

24 Auch vertilgte Josias die Totenbeschwörer, Zeichendeuter, Teraphim, Götzen, überhaupt alle Scheusale, die im Lande Juda und in Jerusalem zu sehen waren, um die Worte der Lehre auszuführen, die geschrieben waren in dem Buche, das der Priester Chilkia im Hause des Herrn gefunden hatte.

Josiah also banished those who talked with the dead or with spirits. He also banished the fetishes, the idols, and all the disgusting things that were seen in the land of Judah and in Jerusalem, so as to confirm the words of the law which were written in the book that Hilkiah the priest had found in the house of Yahweh.

25 Wie er war vor ihm kein König gewesen, der sich zum Herrn bekehrt hätte, von ganzem Herzen, aus ganzer Seele und aus aller Macht, genau nach Mosis Lehre. Auch nach ihm erstand nicht seinesgleichen.

Before Josiah, there had been no king like him, who turned to Yahweh with all his heart, all his soul, and all his might, who followed all the law of Moses. Nor did any king like Josiah arise after him.

26 Und dennoch ließ der Herr nicht von seinem heftigen Zorn, der über Juda erglüht war, ob all der Kränkungen, mit denen ihn Manasse gekränkt hatte.

Nevertheless, Yahweh did not turn away from the burning of his fierce anger, which burned against Judah because of all that Manasseh had done to provoke him to anger.

27 Der Herr sprach: "Auch Juda schaffe ich weg von meinem Angesicht, so wie ich Israel hinweggeschafft, und ich verwerfe diese Stadt, die ich erwählt, Jerusalem mitsamt dem Haus, von dem ich sprach: 'Mein Name soll dort sein!'"

So Yahweh said, “I will also remove Judah out of my sight, as I have removed Israel, and I will throw away this city that I have chosen, Jerusalem, and the house of which I said, 'My name will be there.'”

28 Ist nicht der Rest der Geschichte des Josias und alles, was er sonst getan, im Buche der Geschichte der Judakönige aufgeschrieben?

As for the other matters concerning Josiah, everything that he did, are they not written in the book of the events of the kings of Judah?

29 Zu seiner Zeit zog Ägyptens König, Pharao Necho, wegen des Assyrerkönigs zum Euphratstrom. Der König Josias zog ihm nun entgegen. Sobald er ihn aber erblickte, tötete er ihn zu Megiddo.

In his days, Pharaoh Necho, king of Egypt, went to fight against the king of Assyria at the Euphrates River. King Josiah went to meet Necho in battle, and Necho killed him at Megiddo.

30 Da fuhren ihn seine Diener tot aus Megiddo, brachten ihn nach Jerusalem und begruben ihn in seiner Grabstätte. Da nahm das eingesessene Volk des Josias Sohn Joachaz. Und sie salbten ihn und machten ihn an seines Vaters Statt zum König.

Josiah's servants carried him dead in a chariot from Megiddo, brought him to Jerusalem, and buried him in his own grave. Then the people of the land took Jehoahaz son of Josiah, anointed him, and made him king in his father's place.

31 Joachaz war dreiundzwanzig Jahre alt, als er König wurde, und drei Monate regierte er zu Jerusalem. Seine Mutter hieß Chamutal und war des Jeremias Tochter aus Libna.

Jehoahaz was twenty-three years old when he began to reign, and he reigned three months in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Hamutal; she was the daughter of Jeremiah of Libnah.

32 Er tat, was dem Herrn mißfiel, ganz wie seine Väter getan.

Jehoahaz did what was evil in the sight of Yahweh, like everything that his ancestors had done.

33 Da entsetzte ihn Pharao Necho der Regierung über Jerusalem zu Ribla in der Landschaft Hamat und legte dem Land eine Geldbuße von hundert Talenten Silber und zehn Talenten Gold auf.

Pharaoh Necho put him in chains at Riblah in the land of Hamath, so that he might not reign in Jerusalem. Then Necho fined Judah one hundred talents of silver and one talent of gold.

34 Und Pharao Necho machte des Josias Sohn Eljakim an seines Vaters Josias Statt zum König und änderte seinen Namen in Jojakim. Den Joachaz aber nahm er fest. So kam er nach Ägypten und starb hier.

Pharaoh Necho made Eliakim son of Josiah king in the place of Josiah his father, and changed his name to Jehoiakim. But he took Jehoahaz away to Egypt, and Jehoahaz died there.

35 Das Gold und Silber aber gab Jojakim dem Pharao. Er aber schätzte das Land ein, um das Geld nach des Pharaos Befehl abliefern zu können. Er hatte beim eingesessenen Volk von jedem je nach der Schätzung das Silber und Gold eingetrieben, um es dem Pharao Necho abzuliefern.

Jehoiakim paid the silver and gold to Pharaoh. In order to meet the demand of Pharaoh, Jehoikim taxed the land and he forced each man among the people of the land to pay him the silver and gold according to their assessments.

36 Jojakim war fünfundzwanzig Jahre alt, als er König wurde, und elf Jahre regierte er zu Jerusalem. Seine Mutter hieß Zebudda und war des Pedaja Tochter aus Ruma.

Jehoiakim was twenty-five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Zebidah; she was the daughter of Pedaiah of Rumah.

37 Er tat, was dem Herrn mißfiel, ganz wie seine Väter getan hatten.

Jehoiakim did what was evil in the sight of Yahweh, just as his ancestors had done.
