1 Als Atalja, Achazjas Mutter, erfuhr, daß ihr Sohn tot sei, erhob sie sich und vertilgte den ganzen Königsstamm.

And Gotholia the mother of Ochozias saw that her son was dead, and she destroyed all the seed royal.

2 Aber Joseba, des Königs Joram Tochter und Vollschwester Achazjas, nahm den Joas, des Achazja Sohn, und brachte ihn verstohlenerweise mitten aus den Königssöhnen, die getötet werden sollten, mit seiner Amme in die Bettkammer. So verbargen sie ihn vor Atalja, und er ward nicht getötet.

And Josabee daughter of king Joram, sister of Ochozias, took Joas the son of her brother, and stole him from among the king's sons that were put to death, [secreting] him and his nurse in the bedchamber, and hid him from the face of Gotholia, and he was not slain.

3 Er blieb bei ihr im Hause des Herrn sechs Jahre versteckt. Atalja aber herrschte über das Land.

And he remained with her hid in the house of the Lord six years: and Gotholia reigned over the land.

4 Im siebten Jahre aber sandte Jojada hin und holte die Obersten der karischen Hundertschaften und der Läufer. Und er brachte sie zu sich in das Haus des Herrn. Dann verbündete er sich mit ihnen und ließ sie im Hause des Herrn schwören. Hierauf zeigte er ihnen den Königssohn.

And in the seventh year Jodae sent and took the captains of hundreds of the Chorri and of the Rhasim, and brought them to him into the house of the Lord, and made a covenant of the Lord with them, and adjured them, and Jodae showed them the king's son.

5 Er gebot ihnen: "Dies habt ihr zu tun: Das Drittel, das am Sabbat abzieht, hat die Wache im Königshaus,

And charged them, saying, This [is] the thing which you shall do.

6 das andere Drittel am Tor des Ausgangs und das letzte Drittel am Tor hinter den Läufern. Die Wache am Haus aber haltet abwechselnd!

Let a third part of you go in [on] the sabbath-day, and keep you the watch of the king's house in the porch; and another third in the gate of the high way, and a third at the gate behind the footmen; and keep you the guard of the house.

7 Zwei Teile von euch, alle, die am Sabbat zum Dienste kommen, sollen Wache halten am Hause des Herrn beim König!

And there [shall be] two parties among you, even every one that goes out on the Sabbath, and they shall keep the guard of the Lord's house before the king.

8 Schart euch um den König, jeder mit seinen Waffen in der Hand! Wer in die Reihen dringt, werde getötet! Bleibt beim König, wenn er aus- und einzieht!"

And do you compass the king about every man with his weapon in his hand, and he that goes into the ranges shall die: and they shall be with the king in his going out and in his coming in.

9 Die Obersten der Hundertschaften taten nun ganz, wie es der Priester Jojada befohlen hatte. Jeder nahm seine Leute mit, die am Sabbat Abziehenden und die am Sabbat Aufziehenden, und sie kamen zum Priester Jojada.

And the captains of hundreds did all things that the wise Jodae commanded; and they took each his men, both those that went in on the sabbath-day, and those that went out on the sabbath-day, and went in to Jodae the priest.

10 Und der Priester gab den Obersten der Hundertschaften die Lanzen und Schilde des Königs David im Hause des Herrn.

And the priest gave to the captains of hundreds the swords and spears of king David that were in the house of the Lord.

11 So standen die Läufer, jeder mit seinen Waffen in der Hand, von des Hauses Südseite bis zur Nordseite, um Altar und Haus, rings um den König.

And the footmen stood each with his weapon in his hand from the right corner of the house to the left corner of the house, [by] the altar and the house round about the king.

12 Da führte er den Königssohn heraus und legte ihm das Diadem und die Spange an. So machten sie ihn zum König, salbten ihn, klatschten in die Hände und riefen: "Es lebe der König!"

And he brought forth the king's son, and put upon him the crown and [gave him] the testimony; and he made him king, and anointed him: and they clapped [their] hands, and said, Long live the king.

13 Atalja aber hörte den Lärm der Tanzenden im Volke. So kam sie in das Haus des Herrn zum Volke.

And Gotholia heard the sound of the people running, and she went in to the people to the house of the Lord.

14 Da sah sie, wie der König nach dem Brauch auf der Säule stand und die Fürsten mit den Hörnern beim König, und wie alles Volk des Landes fröhlich war und in die Hörner stieß. Da zerriß Atalja ihre Gewänder und schrie: "Verschwörung! Verschwörung!"

And she looked, and, behold, the king stood near a pillar according to the manner; and the singers and the trumpeters were before the king and all the people of the land [even] rejoicing and sounding with trumpets: and Gotholia tore her garments, and cried, A conspiracy, a conspiracy.

15 Da gebot der Priester Jojada den Obersten der Hundertschaften, den Befehlshabern des Heeres, und sprach zu ihnen: "Führt sie durch die Reihen hinaus! Wer ihr folgt, den tötet mit dem Schwert!" Denn der Priester hatte gesagt: "Sie werde nicht im Haus des Herrn getötet!"

And Jodae the priest commanded the captains of hundreds who were over the host, and said to them, Bring her forth without the ranges, [and] he that goes in after her shall certainly die by the sword. For the priest said, Let her not however be slain in the house of the Lord.

16 Da legten sie Hand an sie, und sie kam durch den Rossegang ins Königshaus. Dort wurde sie getötet.

And they laid hands upon her, and went in by the way of the horses' entrance into the house of the Lord, and she was slain there.

17 Da schloß Jojada den Bund zwischen dem Herrn, dem König und dem Volk, daß sie ein Volk des Herrn sein wollten, sowie zwischen dem König und dem Volk.

And Jodae made a covenant between the Lord and the king and the people, that they should be the Lord's people; also between the king and the people.

18 Dann kam alles einheimische Volk in das Baalshaus und riß es ein. Seine Altäre und Bilder zerbrachen sie vollständig, und den Priester Mattan töteten sie vor den Altären. Dann stellte der Priester eine Wache vor das Haus des Herrn.

And all the people of the land went into the house of Baal, and tore it down, and completely broke in pieces his altars and his images, and they killed Mathan the priest of Baal before the altars. And the priest appointed overseers over the house of the Lord.

19 Darauf nahm er die Obersten der Hundertschaften, die Karer, die Läufer und das ganze einheimische Volk. Und sie führten den König aus dem Hause des Herrn hinab und kamen durch das Läufertor ins Königshaus. Da setzte er sich auf den Königsthron.

And he took the captains of the hundreds, and the Chorri, and the Rhasim, and all the people of the land, and brought down the king out of the house of the Lord; and they went in by the way of the gate of the footmen of the king's house, and seated him there on the throne of the kings.

20 Alles Volk des Landes war fröhlich; die Stadt aber war ruhig geblieben, obschon sie Atalja mit dem Schwert im Königshaus getötet hatten.

And all the people of the land rejoiced, and the city was at rest: and they killed Gotholia with the sword in the house of the king.

21 Joas war sieben Jahre alt, als er König wurde.

Joas [was] seven years old when he began to reign.
