1 Samuel 4

1 Und so galt Samuels Wort für ganz Israel. Israel aber zog gegen die Philister in den Kampf. Sie lagerten am Eisstein; die Philister aber lagerten sich bei Aphek.

And the word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now Israel went out against the Philistines to battle, and pitched beside Eben-ezer: and the Philistines pitched in Aphek.

2 Die Philister nun boten Israel den Kampf an. Da begann der Kampf, und Israel ward von den Philistern geschlagen. Auf dem Kampfplatz auf dem Felde wurden an 4.000 Mann erschlagen.

And the Philistines put themselves in array against Israel: and when they joined battle, Israel was smitten before the Philistines: and they slew of the army in the field about four thousand men.

3 So kam die Mannschaft wieder in das Lager; da sagten die Ältesten Israels: "Warum hat uns heute der Herr vor den Philistern geschlagen? Wir wollen die Bundeslade des Herrn aus Silo zu uns holen. So soll er in unsere Mitte kommen und uns aus unserer Feinde Hand erretten!"

And when the people were come into the camp, the elders of Israel said, Wherefore hath the LORD smitten us today before the Philistines? Let as fetch the ark of the covenant of the LORD out of Shiloh unto us, that it may come among us, and save us out of the hand of our enemies.

4 Da sandte das Volk nach Silo. Und man holte von dort die Bundeslade des Herrn der Heerscharen, der auf den Cheruben thront. Dabei waren auch die beiden Elisöhne Chophni und Pinechas mit der Bundeslade Gottes.

So the people sent to Shiloh, and they brought from thence the ark of the covenant of the LORD of hosts, which sitteth upon the cherubim: and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.

5 Als die Bundeslade des Herrn ins Lager kam, erhob ganz Israel lauten Jubel, daß der Boden dröhnte.

And when the ark of the covenant of the LORD came into the camp, all Israel shouted with a great shout, so that the earth rang again.

6 Die Philister aber hörten das schallende Jubelgeschrei und fragten: "Was bedeutet dieser laute Jubel im Lager der Hebräer?" Da erfuhren sie, daß die Lade des Herrn ins Lager gekommen sei.

And when the Philistines heard the noise of the shout, they said, What meaneth the noise of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews? And they understood that the ark of the LORD was come into the camp.

7 Da fürchteten sich die Philister und sprachen: "Ein Gott ist zu ihnen ins Lager gekommen." Und sie sprachen: "Wehe uns! So ist es noch nie gewesen.

And the Philistines were afraid, for they said, God is come into the camp. And they said, Woe unto us! for there hath not been such a thing heretofore.

8 Wehe uns! Wer rettet uns aus der Hand dieser mächtigen Götter? Das sind die gleichen Götter, die Ägypten mit allerlei Plagen verheerend geschlagen haben.

Woe unto us! who shall deliver us out of the hand of these mighty gods? these are the gods that smote the Egyptians with all manner of plagues in the wilderness.

9 Haltet euch tapfer und seid Männer, ihr Philister, daß ihr nicht den Hebräern dienet, wie sie euch gedient haben! Seid denn Männer und kämpfet!"

Be strong, and quit yourselves like men, O ye Philistines, that ye be not servants unto the Hebrews, as they have been to you: quit yourselves like men, and fight.

10 Da kämpften die Philister. Israel aber unterlag und floh, jeder in sein Zelt. Und so ward die Niederlage sehr groß. Von Israel fielen 30.000 Mann, lauter Fußvolk.

And the Philistines fought, and Israel was smitten, and they fled every man to his tent: and there was a very great slaughter; for there fell of Israel thirty thousand footmen.

11 Auch die Gotteslade ward erbeutet, und die beiden Elisöhne Chophni und Pinechas waren gefallen.

And the ark of God was taken; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were slain.

12 Da lief ein Mann von Benjamin vom Walplatz und kam am selben Tage nach Silo, die Kleider zerrissen und Staub auf dem Kopfe.

And there ran a man of Benjamin out of the army, and came to Shiloh the same day with his clothes rent, and with earth upon his head.

13 Als er ankam, saß Eli auf dem Stuhle nahe am Wege und spähte. Denn sein Herz bangte um die Lade Gottes. Als der Mann aber kam und der Stadt die Kunde brachte, schrie die ganze Stadt.

And when he came, lo, Eli sat upon his seat by the way side watching: for his heart trembled for the ark of God. And when the man came into the city, and told it, all the city cried out.

14 Eli hörte das laute Geschrei und fragte: "Was bedeutet dies Geschrei der Menge?" Da kam der Mann herangeeilt und brachte Eli die Kunde.

And when Eli heard the noise of the crying, he said, What meaneth the noise of this tumult? And the man hasted and came and told Eli.

15 Achtundneunzig Jahre alt war Eli, und seine Augen waren starr, und er konnte nicht mehr sehen.

Now Eli was ninety and eight years old; and his eyes were set, that he could not see.

16 Der Mann sprach zu Eli: "Ich bin der, der vom Walplatz kommt. Ich bin heute von dem Walplatz geflohen." Da fragte er: "Wie ist es gegangen, mein Sohn?".

And the man said unto Eli, I am he that came out of the army, and I fled today out of the army. And he said, How went the matter, my son?

17 Da antwortete der Bote und sprach: "Israel ist vor den Philistern geflohen. Dazu hat das Volk eine große Niederlage erlitten. Auch deine beiden Söhne Chophni und Pinechas sind gefallen, und die Gotteslade ist genommen worden."

And he that brought the tidings answered and said, Israel is fled before the Philistines, and there hath been also a great slaughter among the people, and thy two sons also, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God is taken.

18 Als er aber die Gotteslade nannte, fiel jener rücklings vom Stuhle durch die Tür, brach das Genick und starb. Denn der Mann war alt und schwer. Er hatte Israel vierzig Jahre gerichtet.

And it came to pass, when he made mention of the ark of God, that he fell from off his seat backward by the side of the gate, and his neck brake, and he died: for he was an old man, and heavy. And he had judged Israel forty years.

19 Seine Schwiegertochter, des Pinechas Weib, war hochschwanger. Sie hörte nun die Kunde vom Verlust der Gotteslade und vom Tod ihres Schwiegervaters und ihres Mannes. Da sank sie hin und gebar. Denn die Wehen hatten sie überrascht.

And his daughter in law, Phinehas’ wife, was with child, near to be delivered: and when she heard the tidings that the ark of God was taken, and that her father in law and her husband were dead, she bowed herself and brought forth; for her pains came upon her.

20 Als sie zum Sterben kam, sprachen die umstellenden Weiber: "Fürchte dich nicht! Du hast einen Sohn geboren." Sie aber gab keine Antwort und achtete nicht darauf,

And about the time of her death the women that stood by her said unto her, Fear not; for thou hast brought forth a son. But she answered not, neither did she regard it.

21 sondern nannte den Knaben Ikabod. Sie sagte: "Dahin ist Israels Ehrenpreis", wegen des Verlustes der Gotteslade, ihres Schwiegervaters und ihres Mannes.

And she named the child Ichabod, saying, The glory is departed from Israel: because the ark of God was taken, and because of her father in law and her husband.

22 So sprach sie also: "Dahin ist Israels Ehrenpreis; denn die Gotteslade ist genommen."

And she said, The glory is departed from Israel; for the ark of God is taken.
