Jakobus 1
1 Jakobus, Knecht Gottes und des Herrn Jesus Christus, den zwölf Stämmen, die in der Zerstreuung sind, seinen Gruß!
James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, greets the twelve tribes that are living abroad.
2 Achtet es für lauter Freude, meine Brüder, wenn ihr in mancherlei Versuchungen fallet,
My friends, whatever trials you may face from time to time, always regard them as a reason for rejoicing,
3 da ihr wisset, daß die Bewährung eures Glaubens Ausharren bewirkt.
knowing, as you do, that the testing of your faith develops endurance.
4 Das Ausharren aber habe ein vollkommenes Werk, auf daß ihr vollkommen und vollendet seid und in nichts Mangel habt.
And let endurance do its work perfectly, so that you may be altogether perfect, and in no respect lacking.
5 Wenn aber jemand von euch Weisheit mangelt, so bitte er von Gott, der allen willig gibt und nichts vorwirft, und sie wird ihm gegeben werden.
If any one of you lacks wisdom, they should ask wisdom from the God who gives freely to everyone without reproach, and it will be given to them.
6 Er bitte aber im Glauben, ohne irgend zu zweifeln; denn der Zweifelnde ist gleich einer Meereswoge, die vom Winde bewegt und hin und her getrieben wird.
But they should ask with confidence, never doubting; for the person who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven here and there at the mercy of the wind –
7 Denn jener Mensch denke nicht, daß er etwas von dem Herrn empfangen werde;
Such a person must not expect that they will receive anything from the Lord,
8 er ist ein wankelmütiger Mann, unstet in allen seinen Wegen.
vacillating as they are, irresolute at every turn.
9 Der niedrige Bruder aber rühme sich seiner Hoheit,
Let a follower in humble circumstances be proud of their exalted position,
10 der reiche aber seiner Erniedrigung; denn wie des Grases Blume wird er vergehen.
but a rich follower of their humiliation; for the rich will pass away like a wild flower.
11 Denn die Sonne ist aufgegangen mit ihrer Glut und hat das Gras gedörrt, und seine Blume ist abgefallen, und die Zierde seines Ansehens ist verdorben; also wird auch der Reiche in seinen Wegen verwelken.
As the sun rises, and the hot wind blows, the plant withers, its flower fades, and all its beauty is gone. So is it with the rich. In the midst of their pursuits they will wither away.
12 Glückselig der Mann, der die Versuchung erduldet! Denn nachdem er bewährt ist, wird er die Krone des Lebens empfangen, welche er denen verheißen hat, die ihn lieben.
Blessed is the person who remains firm under temptation, for, when they have stood the test, they will receive the crown of life, which the Lord has promised to those who love him.
13 Niemand sage, wenn er versucht wird: Ich werde von Gott versucht; denn Gott kann nicht versucht werden vom Bösen, und selbst versucht er niemand.
Let no one say, when they are tempted, ‘It is God who is tempting me!’ For God, who cannot be tempted to do wrong, does not himself tempt anyone.
14 Ein jeder aber wird versucht, wenn er von seiner eigenen Lust fortgezogen und gelockt wird.
A man is in every case tempted by their own passions – allured and enticed by them.
15 Danach, wenn die Lust empfangen hat, gebiert sie die Sünde; die Sünde aber, wenn sie vollendet ist, gebiert den Tod.
Then passion conceives and gives birth to sin, and sin, on reaching maturity, brings forth death.
16 Irret euch nicht, meine geliebten Brüder!
Do not be deceived, my dear friends.
17 Jede gute Gabe und jedes vollkommene Geschenk kommt von oben herab, von dem Vater der Lichter, bei welchem keine Veränderung ist, noch eines Wechsels Schatten.
Every good thing given us, and every perfect gift, is from above, and comes down to us from the Father of the lights in the heavens, who is himself never subject to change or to eclipse.
18 Nach seinem eigenen Willen hat er uns durch das Wort der Wahrheit gezeugt, auf daß wir eine gewisse Erstlingsfrucht seiner Geschöpfe seien.
Because he so willed, he gave us life, through the message of the truth, so that we should be, as it were, a kind of first fruits of his creation.
19 Daher, meine geliebten Brüder, sei jeder Mensch schnell zum Hören, langsam zum Reden, langsam zum Zorn.
Mark this, my dear friends – Let everyone be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry;
20 Denn eines Mannes Zorn wirkt nicht Gottes Gerechtigkeit.
for human anger does not forward the righteous purpose of God.
21 Deshalb leget ab alle Unsauberkeit und alles Überfließen von Schlechtigkeit, und empfanget mit Sanftmut das eingepflanzte Wort, das eure Seelen zu erretten vermag.
Therefore, get rid of all filthiness and whatever wickedness still remains, and in a humble spirit receive that message which has been planted in your hearts and is able to save your souls.
22 Seid aber Täter des Wortes und nicht allein Hörer, die sich selbst betrügen.
Put that message into practice, and do not merely listen to it – deceiving yourselves.
23 Denn wenn jemand ein Hörer des Wortes ist und nicht ein Täter, der ist einem Manne gleich, welcher sein natürliches Angesicht in einem Spiegel betrachtet.
For, when anyone listens to it and does not practice it, they are like a person looking at their own face in a mirror.
24 Denn er hat sich selbst betrachtet und ist weggegangen, und er hat alsbald vergessen, wie er beschaffen war.
They look at themselves, then go on their way,
25 Wer aber in das vollkommene Gesetz, das der Freiheit, nahe hineingeschaut hat und darin bleibt, indem er nicht ein vergeßlicher Hörer, sondern ein Täter des Werkes ist, dieser wird glückselig sein in seinem Tun.
but the person who looks carefully into the perfect Law, the Law of freedom, and continues to do so, not listening to it and then forgetting it, but putting it into practice – that person will be blessed in what they do.
26 Wenn jemand sich dünkt, er diene Gott, und zügelt nicht seine Zunge, sondern betrügt sein Herz, dessen Gottesdienst ist eitel.
When a person appears to be religious, yet does not bridle their tongue, but imposes on their own conscience, that person’s religious observances are valueless.
27 Ein reiner und unbefleckter Gottesdienst vor Gott und dem Vater ist dieser: Waisen und Witwen in ihrer Drangsal besuchen, sich selbst von der Welt unbefleckt erhalten.
That religious observance which is pure and spotless in the eyes of God our Father is this – to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself uncontaminated by the world.
