1 Samuel 14

1 Und es geschah eines Tages, da sprach Jonathan, der Sohn Sauls, zu dem Knaben, der seine Waffen trug: Komm und laß uns hinübergehen zu der Aufstellung der Philister, die dort drüben ist. Seinem Vater aber tat er es nicht kund.

One day Jonathan son of Saul said to the young man bearing his armor, “Come, let us cross over to the Philistine outpost on the other side.” But Jonathan did not tell his father.

2 Und Saul saß am Ende von Gibea, unter dem Granatbaum, der zu Migron ist; und des Volkes, das bei ihm war, war bei sechshundert Mann.

Meanwhile, Saul was staying under the pomegranate tree in Migron on the outskirts of Gibeah. And the troops who were with him numbered about six hundred men,

3 (Und Ahija, der Sohn Ahitubs, des Bruders Jkabods, des Sohnes Pinehas', des Sohnes Elis, des Priesters Jehovas zu Silo, trug das Ephod.) Und das Volk wußte nicht, daß Jonathan weggegangen war.

including Ahijah, who was wearing an ephod. He was the son of Ichabod’s brother Ahitub son of Phinehas, the son of Eli the priest of the LORD in Shiloh. But the troops did not know that Jonathan had left.

4 Es war aber zwischen den Pässen, durch welche Jonathan zu der Aufstellung der Philister hinüberzugehen suchte, eine Felszacke auf dieser Seite und eine Felszacke auf jener Seite: der Name der einen war Bozez, und der Name der anderen Sene;

Now there were cliffs on both sides of the pass that Jonathan intended to cross to reach the Philistine outpost. One was named Bozez and the other Seneh.

5 die eine Zacke bildet eine Säule nordwärts, Mikmas gegenüber, und die andere südwärts, Geba gegenüber.

One cliff stood to the north toward Michmash, and the other to the south toward Geba.

6 Und Jonathan sprach zu dem Knaben, der seine Waffen trug: Komm und laß uns hinübergehen zu der Aufstellung dieser Unbeschnittenen; vielleicht wird Jehova für uns wirken, denn für Jehova gibt es kein Hindernis, durch viele zu retten oder durch wenige.

Jonathan said to the young man bearing his armor, “Come, let us cross over to the outpost of these uncircumcised men. Perhaps the LORD will work on our behalf. Nothing can hinder the LORD from saving, whether by many or by few.”

7 Und sein Waffenträger sprach zu ihm: Tue alles, was in deinem Herzen ist; wende dich, wohin du willst, siehe, ich bin mit dir nach deinem Herzen.

His armor-bearer replied, “Do all that is in your heart. Go ahead; I am with you heart and soul.”

8 Und Jonathan sprach: Siehe, wir gehen zu den Männern hinüber und wollen uns ihnen zeigen.

“Very well,” said Jonathan, “we will cross over toward these men and show ourselves to them.

9 Wenn sie so zu uns sprechen: Stehet still, bis wir zu euch gelangen! so wollen wir auf unserer Stelle stehen bleiben und nicht zu ihnen hinaufgehen;

If they say, ‘Wait until we come to you,’ then we will stay where we are and will not go up to them.

10 wenn sie aber so sprechen: Kommet zu uns herauf! so wollen wir hinaufgehen, denn Jehova hat sie in unsere Hand gegeben; und das soll uns das Zeichen sein.

But if they say, ‘Come on up,’ then we will go up, because this will be our sign that the LORD has delivered them into our hands.”

11 Und beide zeigten sich der Aufstellung der Philister. Da sprachen die Philister: Siehe, Hebräer kommen aus den Löchern hervor, worin sie sich versteckt haben.

So the two of them showed themselves to the outpost of the Philistines, who exclaimed, “Look, the Hebrews are coming out of the holes in which they were hiding!”

12 Und die Männer der Aufstellung antworteten Jonathan und seinem Waffenträger und sprachen: Kommet zu uns herauf, so wollen wir euch etwas zu wissen tun! Da sprach Jonathan zu seinem Waffenträger: Steige hinauf, mir nach; denn Jehova hat sie in die Hand Israels gegeben.

So the men of the outpost called out to Jonathan and his armor-bearer, “Come on up, and we will teach you a lesson!” “Follow me,” Jonathan told his armor-bearer, “for the LORD has delivered them into the hand of Israel.”

13 Und Jonathan stieg auf seinen Händen und auf seinen Füßen hinauf, und sein Waffenträger ihm nach. Und sie fielen vor Jonathan, und sein Waffenträger tötete hinter ihm her.

So Jonathan climbed up on his hands and feet, with his armor-bearer behind him. And the Philistines fell before Jonathan, and his armor-bearer followed and finished them off.

14 Und die erste Niederlage, welche Jonathan und sein Waffenträger anrichteten, war bei zwanzig Mann, etwa auf der halben Furchenlänge eines Jucharts Ackers.

In that first assault, Jonathan and his armor-bearer struck down about twenty men over half an acre of land.

15 Und ein Schrecken entstand im Lager, auf dem Felde und unter dem ganzen Volke; die Aufstellung und der Verheerungszug, auch sie erschraken; und das Land erbebte, und es wurde zu einem Schrecken Gottes.

Then terror struck the Philistines in the camp, in the field, and among all the people. Even those in the outposts and raiding parties trembled. Indeed, the earth quaked and panic spread from God.

16 Und die Wächter Sauls zu Gibea-Benjamin sahen, und siehe, die Menge zerrann und lief dahin und dorthin.

Now when Saul’s watchmen at Gibeah in Benjamin looked and saw the troops melting away and scattering in every direction,

17 Und Saul sprach zu dem Volke, das bei ihm war: Haltet doch Musterung und sehet, wer von uns weggegangen ist. Und sie hielten Musterung, und siehe, Jonathan und sein Waffenträger waren nicht da.

Saul said to the troops who were with him, “Call the roll and see who has left us.” And when they had called the roll, they saw that Jonathan and his armor-bearer were not there.

18 Da sprach Saul zu Ahija: Bringe die Lade Gottes herbei; denn die Lade Gottes war an jenem Tage unter den Kindern Israel.

Then Saul said to Ahijah, “Bring the ark of God.” (For at that time it was with the Israelites.)

19 Und es geschah, während Saul zu dem Priester redete, da nahm das Getümmel im Lager der Philister fort und fort zu; und Saul sprach zu dem Priester: Ziehe deine Hand zurück.

While Saul was talking to the priest, the commotion in the Philistine camp continued to increase. So Saul said to the priest, “Withdraw your hand.”

20 Und Saul und alles Volk, das bei ihm war, versammelten sich, und sie kamen zum Streit; und siehe, da war das Schwert des einen wider den anderen, eine sehr große Verwirrung.

Then Saul and all his troops assembled and marched to the battle, and they found the Philistines in total confusion, with each man wielding the sword against his neighbor.

21 Und es waren Hebräer bei den Philistern, wie früher, welche mit ihnen in das Lager ringsum hinaufgezogen waren; auch sie wandten sich, um mit Israel zu sein, das mit Saul und Jonathan war.

And the Hebrews who had previously gone up into the surrounding camps of the Philistines now went over to the Israelites who were with Saul and Jonathan.

22 Und alle Männer von Israel, die sich im Gebirge Ephraim versteckt hatten, hörten, daß die Philister geflohen waren; und auch sie setzten ihnen nach im Streit.

When all the Israelites who had been hiding in the hill country of Ephraim heard that the Philistines were fleeing, they also joined Saul and Jonathan in the battle.

23 So rettete Jehova Israel an selbigem Tage. Und der Streit ging über Beth-Awen hinaus.

So the LORD saved Israel that day, and the battle moved on beyond Beth-aven.

24 Die Männer von Israel waren aber sehr angestrengt an jenem Tage; und Saul beschwor das Volk und sprach: Verflucht sei der Mann, der Speise essen wird bis zum Abend, und bis ich mich an meinen Feinden gerächt habe! Und das ganze Volk kostete keine Speise.

Now the men of Israel were in distress that day, for Saul had placed the troops under an oath, saying, “Cursed is the man who eats any food before evening, before I have taken vengeance on my enemies.” So none of the troops tasted any food.

25 Und das ganze Volk kam in den Wald, und Honig war auf der Fläche des Feldes.

Then all the troops entered the forest, and there was honey on the ground.

26 Und als das Volk in den Wald kam: siehe da, ein Strom von Honig; aber niemand brachte seine Hand zu seinem Munde, denn das Volk fürchtete den Schwur.

And when they entered the forest and saw the flowing honey, not one of them put his hand to his mouth, because they feared the oath.

27 Jonathan aber hatte es nicht gehört, als sein Vater das Volk beschwor; und er streckte das Ende seines Stabes aus, der in seiner Hand war, und tauchte ihn in den Honigseim und brachte seine Hand wieder zu seinem Munde, und seine Augen wurden hell.

Jonathan, however, had not heard that his father had charged the people with the oath. So he reached out the end of the staff in his hand, dipped it into the honeycomb, and put his hand to his mouth; and his eyes brightened.

28 Und einer von dem Volke hob an und sprach: Dein Vater hat das Volk feierlich beschworen und gesagt: Verflucht sei der Mann, der heute Speise essen wird! Und so ist das Volk ermattet.

Then one of the soldiers told him, “Your father bound the troops with a solemn oath, saying, ‘Cursed is the man who eats food today.’ That is why the people are faint.”

29 Und Jonathan sprach: Mein Vater hat das Land in Trübsal gebracht; sehet doch, daß meine Augen hell geworden sind, weil ich ein wenig von diesem Honig gekostet habe.

“My father has brought trouble to the land,” Jonathan replied. “Just look at how my eyes have brightened because I tasted a little of this honey.

30 Was wäre es gewesen, wenn das Volk heute ungehindert von der Beute seiner Feinde gegessen hätte, die es gefunden hat! Denn wäre dann nicht die Niederlage der Philister groß gewesen?

How much better it would have been if the troops had eaten freely today from the plunder they took from their enemies! Would not the slaughter of the Philistines have been much greater?”

31 Und sie schlugen die Philister an jenem Tage von Mikmas bis nach Ajjalon; und das Volk war sehr ermattet.

That day, after the Israelites had struck down the Philistines from Michmash to Aijalon, the people were very faint.

32 Und das Volk fiel über die Beute her, und sie nahmen Kleinvieh und Rinder und Kälber und schlachteten sie auf die Erde hin; und das Volk aß mit dem Blute.

So they rushed greedily to the plunder, taking sheep, cattle, and calves. They slaughtered them on the ground and ate meat with the blood still in it.

33 Und man berichtete es Saul und sprach: Siehe, das Volk sündigt gegen Jehova, indem es mit dem Blute ißt. Und er sprach: Ihr habt treulos gehandelt! Wälzet sofort einen großen Stein zu mir her.

Then someone reported to Saul: “Look, the troops are sinning against the LORD by eating meat with the blood still in it.” “You have broken faith,” said Saul. “Roll a large stone over here at once.”

34 Und Saul sprach: Zerstreuet euch unter das Volk und sprechet zu ihnen: Bringet her zu mir, ein jeder sein Rind und ein jeder sein Kleinvieh, und schlachtet sie hier und esset; und sündiget nicht gegen Jehova, indem ihr mit dem Blute esset. Und in jener Nacht brachte das ganze Volk ein jeder sein Rind an seiner Hand; und sie schlachteten sie daselbst.

Then he said, “Go among the troops and tell them, ‘Each man must bring me his ox or his sheep, slaughter them in this place, and then eat. Do not sin against the LORD by eating meat with the blood still in it.’” So that night everyone brought his ox and slaughtered it there.

35 Und Saul baute Jehova einen Altar; mit diesem fing er an, Jehova einen Altar zu bauen.

Then Saul built an altar to the LORD; it was the first time he had built an altar to the LORD.

36 Und Saul sprach: Laßt uns bei der Nacht hinabziehen, den Philistern nach, und unter ihnen plündern, bis der Morgen hell wird, und keinen Mann unter ihnen übriglassen! Und sie sprachen: Tue alles, was gut ist in deinen Augen. Und der Priester sprach: Laßt uns hier zu Gott nahen!

And Saul said, “Let us go down after the Philistines by night and plunder them until dawn, leaving no man alive!” “Do what seems good to you,” the troops replied. But the priest said, “We must consult God here.”

37 Und Saul fragte Gott: Soll ich hinabziehen, den Philistern nach? Wirst du sie in die Hand Israels geben? Aber er antwortete ihm nicht an jenem Tage.

So Saul inquired of God, “Shall I go down after the Philistines? Will You give them into the hand of Israel?” But God did not answer him that day.

38 Da sprach Saul: Tretet hierher, alle Häupter des Volkes, und erkennet und sehet, wodurch diese Sünde heute geschehen ist.

Therefore Saul said, “Come here, all you leaders of the troops, and let us investigate how this sin has occurred today.

39 Denn so wahr Jehova lebt, der Israel gerettet hat, wenn sie an meinem Sohne Jonathan wäre, so sollte er gewißlich sterben! Und niemand antwortete ihm aus dem ganzen Volke.

As surely as the LORD who saves Israel lives, even if it is my son Jonathan, he must die!” But not one of the troops said a word.

40 Und er sprach zu dem ganzen Israel: Seid ihr auf der einen Seite, und ich und mein Sohn Jonathan wollen auf der anderen Seite sein. Und das Volk sprach zu Saul: Tue, was gut ist in deinen Augen.

Then Saul said to all Israel, “You stand on one side, and I and my son Jonathan will stand on the other side.” “Do what seems good to you,” the troops replied.

41 Und Saul sprach zu Jehova, dem Gott Israels: Gib ein vollkommenes Los! Und Jonathan und Saul wurden getroffen, und das Volk ging frei aus.

So Saul said to the LORD, the God of Israel, “Why have You not answered Your servant this day? If the fault is with me or my son Jonathan, respond with Urim; but if the fault is with the men of Israel, respond with Thummim.” And Jonathan and Saul were selected, but the people were cleared of the charge.

42 Und Saul sprach: Werfet das Los zwischen mir und meinem Sohne Jonathan! Und Jonathan wurde getroffen.

Then Saul said, “Cast the lot between me and my son Jonathan.” And Jonathan was selected.

43 Da sprach Saul zu Jonathan: Tue mir kund, was du getan hast. Und Jonathan tat es ihm kund und sprach: Mit dem Ende des Stabes, der in meiner Hand war, habe ich ein wenig Honig nur gekostet: Siehe, ich muß sterben!

“Tell me what you have done,” Saul commanded him. So Jonathan told him, “I only tasted a little honey with the end of the staff that was in my hand. And now I must die?”

44 Und Saul sprach: So tue mir Gott, und so füge er hinzu, du mußt gewißlich sterben, Jonathan!

And Saul declared, “May God punish me, and ever so severely, if you, Jonathan, do not surely die!”

45 Aber das Volk sprach zu Saul: Sollte Jonathan sterben, der diese große Rettung in Israel geschafft hat? Das sei ferne! So wahr Jehova lebt, wenn von den Haaren seines Hauptes eines auf die Erde fällt! Denn er hat mit Gott gehandelt an diesem Tage. So erlöste das Volk Jonathan, daß er nicht starb.

But the people said to Saul, “Must Jonathan die—he who accomplished such a great deliverance for Israel? Never! As surely as the LORD lives, not a hair of his head will fall to the ground, for with God’s help he has accomplished this today.” So the people rescued Jonathan, and he did not die.

46 Und Saul zog von der Verfolgung der Philister herauf, und die Philister zogen an ihren Ort.

Then Saul gave up his pursuit of the Philistines, and the Philistines returned to their own land.

47 Und Saul nahm das Königtum ein über Israel; und er stritt ringsum wider alle seine Feinde, wider Moab und wider die Kinder Ammon und wider Edom und wider die Könige von Zoba und wider die Philister; und überall, wohin er sich wandte, übte er Strafe.

After Saul had assumed the kingship over Israel, he fought against all his enemies on every side—the Moabites, the Ammonites, the Edomites, the kings of Zobah, and the Philistines. Wherever he turned, he routed them.

48 Und er tat Mächtiges und schlug Amalek, und errettete Israel aus der Hand seines Plünderers.

He fought valiantly and defeated the Amalekites, delivering Israel from the hands of its plunderers.

49 Und die Söhne Sauls waren: Jonathan und Jischwi und Malkischua. Und die Namen seiner zwei Töchter: der Name der erstgeborenen war Merab, und der Name der jüngeren Michal.

Now the sons of Saul were Jonathan, Ishvi, and Malchishua. His two daughters were named Merab (his firstborn) and Michal (his younger daughter).

50 Und der Name des Weibes Sauls war Achinoam, die Tochter Achimaaz'. Und der Name seines Heerobersten war Abner, der Sohn Ners, des Oheims Sauls;

His wife’s name was Ahinoam daughter of Ahimaaz. The name of the commander of his army was Abner, the son of Saul’s uncle Ner.

51 denn Kis, der Vater Sauls, und Ner, der Vater Abners, waren Söhne Abiels.

Saul’s father Kish and Abner’s father Ner were sons of Abiel.

52 Und der Streit war heftig wider die Philister alle Tage Sauls; und wenn Saul irgend einen streitbaren Mann und irgend einen Tapferen sah, so gesellte er ihn sich zu.

And the war with the Philistines was fierce for all the days of Saul. So whenever he noticed any strong or brave man, Saul would enlist him.
