Matthaeus 3
1 In jenen Tagen aber kommt Johannes der Täufer und predigt in der Wüste von Judäa
In those days came John the Baptist preaching in the desert of Judea;
2 und spricht: Tut Buße, denn das Reich der Himmel ist nahe gekommen.
"Repent," said he, "for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."
3 Denn dieser ist der, von welchem durch den Propheten Jesaias geredet ist, welcher spricht: "Stimme eines Rufenden in der Wüste: Bereitet den Weg des Herrn, machet gerade seine Steige." [Jes. 40,3]
This Johnit was of whom it was said through Isaiah, the prophet, The voice of one who cries aloud in the desert, "Prepare a way for the Lord, Make the paths straight for him."
4 Er aber, Johannes, hatte seine Kleidung von Kamelhaaren und einen ledernen Gürtel um seine Lenden; seine Speise aber war Heuschrecken und wilder Honig.
This Johnwore a garment of camel’s hair, and a leather belt around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey.
5 Da ging zu ihm hinaus Jerusalem und ganz Judäa und die ganze Umgegend des Jordan;
Then Jerusalem began to go out to him, and all Judea, and the whole neighborhood of the Jordan,
6 und sie wurden von ihm im Jordan getauft, indem sie ihre Sünden bekannten.
and were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.
7 Als er aber viele der Pharisäer und Sadducäer zu seiner Taufe kommen sah, sprach er zu ihnen: Otternbrut! wer hat euch gewiesen, dem kommenden Zorn zu entfliehen?
But when Johnsaw that many of the Pharisees and Sadducees were coming for baptism, he said. "O brood of vipers! Who has warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
8 Bringet [Eig. Habet gebracht, d. h. habet gebracht und bringet noch; die griechische Zeitform bezeichnet beides] nun der Buße würdige Frucht;
Then bring forth fruit worthy of repentance.
9 und denket nicht bei euch selbst zu sagen: Wir haben Abraham zum Vater; denn ich sage euch, daß Gott dem Abraham aus diesen Steinen Kinder zu erwecken vermag.
And do not presume to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father’-I tell you that out of these very stones God is able to raise up descendants for Abraham.
10 Schon ist aber die Axt an die Wurzel der Bäume gelegt; jeder Baum nun, der nicht gute Frucht bringt, wird abgehauen und ins Feuer geworfen.
And already the axe is lying at the roots of the trees. Any tree, therefore, that does not bear good fruit is cut down and cast into the fire.
11 Ich zwar taufe euch mit [W. in] Wasser zur Buße; der nach mir Kommende aber ist stärker als ich, dessen Sandalen zu tragen ich nicht würdig [Eig. genugsam, tüchtig] bin; er wird euch mit [W. in] Heiligem Geiste und Feuer taufen;
I indeed am baptizing you in water, unto repentance; but One is coming after me, mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you in the Holy Spirit and in fire.
12 dessen Worfschaufel in seiner Hand ist, und er wird seine Tenne durch und durch reinigen und seinen Weizen in die Scheune sammeln, die Spreu aber wird er verbrennen mit unauslöschlichem Feuer.
His winnowing-fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse the threshing-floor. He will store his wheat in the granary, but will burn up the chaff in unquenchable fire."
13 Dann kommt Jesus aus Galiläa an den Jordan zu Johannes, um von ihm getauft zu werden.
At that very time Jesus was on his way from Galilee to the Jordan, to John, to be baptized by him.
14 Johannes aber wehrte ihm und sprach: Ich habe nötig, von dir getauft zu werden, und du kommst zu mir?
But he tried to prevent him. "It is I," he said, "who need to be baptized by you, and are you coming to me?"
15 Jesus aber antwortete und sprach zu ihm: Laß es jetzt so sein; denn also gebührt es uns, alle Gerechtigkeit zu erfüllen. Dann läßt er es ihm zu. [W. Dann läßt er ihn]
But Jesus answered, "Permit it now, for so it is fitting for us to fulfill every religious duty."
16 Und als Jesus getauft war, stieg er alsbald von dem Wasser herauf; und siehe, die Himmel wurden ihm aufgetan, und er sah den Geist Gottes wie eine Taube herniederfahren und auf ihn kommen.
Then he consented. And after Jesus was baptized, as soon as he rose out of the water, lo! the heavens opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon him,
17 Und siehe, eine Stimme kommt aus den Himmeln, welche spricht: Dieser ist mein geliebter Sohn, an welchem ich Wohlgefallen gefunden habe.
while a voice from heaven said, "This is my son, the beloved, In whom I delight."
