Johannes 8
1 Jesus aber ging nach dem Ölberg.
except Jesus, who went to the Mount of Olives.
2 Frühmorgens aber kam er wiederum in den Tempel, [die Gebäude] und alles Volk kam zu ihm; und er setzte sich und lehrte sie.
But he went again into the Temple Courts early in the morning, and all the people came to him; and he sat down and taught them.
3 Die Schriftgelehrten und die Pharisäer aber bringen ein Weib zu ihm, im Ehebruch ergriffen, und stellen sie in die Mitte
Presently, however, the Teachers of the Law and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery, and placed her in the middle of the Court,
4 und sagen zu ihm: Lehrer, dieses Weib ist im Ehebruch, auf der Tat selbst, ergriffen worden.
and said to Jesus, “Teacher, this woman was found in the act of adultery.
5 In dem Gesetz aber hat uns Moses geboten, solche zu steinigen; du nun, was sagst du?
Now Moses, in the Law, commanded us to stone such women to death; what do you say?”
6 Dies aber sagten sie, ihn versuchend, auf daß sie etwas hätten, um ihn anzuklagen. Jesus aber bückte sich nieder und schrieb mit dem Finger auf die Erde.
They said this to test him, in order to have a charge to bring against him. But Jesus stooped down, and wrote on the ground with his finger.
7 Als sie aber fortfuhren, ihn zu fragen, richtete er sich auf und sprach zu ihnen: Wer von euch ohne Sünde ist, werfe zuerst den Stein auf sie.
However, as they continued asking him, he raised himself, and said, “Let the person among you who has never done wrong throw the first stone at her.”
8 Und wiederum bückte er sich nieder und schrieb auf die Erde.
And again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground.
9 Als sie aber dies hörten, gingen sie einer nach dem anderen hinaus, anfangend von den Ältesten bis zu den Letzten; und Jesus wurde allein gelassen mit dem Weibe in der Mitte.
When they heard that, they went out one by one, beginning with the eldest; and Jesus was left alone with the woman in the middle of the Court.
10 Als aber Jesus sich aufrichtete und außer dem Weibe niemanden sah, sprach er zu ihr: Weib, wo sind jene, deine Verkläger? Hat dich niemand verurteilt?
Raising himself, Jesus said to her, “Woman, where are they? Did no one condemn you?”
11 Sie aber sprach: Niemand, Herr. Jesus aber sprach zu ihr: So verurteile auch ich dich nicht; gehe hin und sündige nicht mehr.
“No one, Sir,” she answered. “Neither do I condemn you,” said Jesus “go, and do not sin again.”
12 Wiederum nun redete Jesus zu ihnen und sprach: Ich bin das Licht der Welt; wer mir nachfolgt, wird nicht in der Finsternis wandeln, sondern wird das Licht des Lebens haben.
Jesus again addressed the people. “I am the light of the world,” he said. “The person who follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
13 Da sprachen die Pharisäer zu ihm: Du zeugst von dir [O. über dich [mich]; so auch v 18] selbst; dein Zeugnis ist nicht wahr.
“You are bearing testimony to yourself!” exclaimed the Pharisees, “your testimony is not trustworthy.”
14 Jesus antwortete und sprach zu ihnen: Auch wenn ich von mir [O. über dich [mich]; so auch v 18] selbst zeuge, ist mein Zeugnis wahr, weil ich weiß, woher ich gekommen bin und wohin ich gehe; ihr aber wisset nicht, woher ich komme und wohin ich gehe.
“Even if I bear testimony to myself,” answered Jesus, “my testimony is trustworthy; for I know where I came from, and where I am going; but you do not know where I come from, nor where I am going.
15 Ihr richtet nach dem Fleische, ich richte niemanden.
You judge by appearances; I judge no one.
16 Wenn ich aber auch richte, so ist mein Gericht wahr, weil ich nicht allein bin, sondern ich und der Vater, der mich gesandt hat.
Yet, even if I were to judge, my judgment would be trustworthy; because I am not alone, but the Father who sent me is with me.
17 Aber auch in eurem Gesetz steht geschrieben, daß das Zeugnis zweier Menschen wahr ist. [5. Mose 17,6;19,15]
Why, in your own Law it is said that the testimony of two persons is trustworthy.
18 Ich bin es, der von mir selbst zeugt, und der Vater, der mich gesandt hat, zeugt von mir.
I, who bear testimony to myself, am one, and the Father who sent me also bears testimony to me.”
19 Da sprachen sie zu ihm: Wo ist dein Vater? Jesus antwortete: Ihr kennet weder mich noch meinen Vater; wenn ihr mich gekannt hättet, so würdet ihr auch meinen Vater gekannt haben.
“Where is your father, then?” they asked. “You know neither me nor my Father,” replied Jesus. “If you had known me, you would have also known my Father.”
20 Diese Worte redete er in der Schatzkammer, lehrend in dem Tempel [die Gebäude; ] und niemand griff ihn, denn seine Stunde war noch nicht gekommen.
These statements Jesus made in the Treasury, while teaching in the Temple Courts. Yet no one arrested him, for his time had not then come.
21 Er sprach nun wiederum zu ihnen: Ich gehe hin, und ihr werdet mich suchen und werdet in eurer Sünde sterben; wo ich hingehe, könnt ihr nicht hinkommen.
Jesus again spoke to the people. “I am going away,” he said, “and you will look for me, but you will die in your sin; you cannot come where I am going.”
22 Da sagten die Juden: Er will sich doch nicht selbst töten, daß er spricht: Wo ich hingehe, könnt ihr nicht hinkommen? -
“Is he going to kill himself,” the people exclaimed, “that he says – ‘You cannot go where I am going’?”
23 Und er sprach zu ihnen: Ihr seid von [W. aus; so auch weiterhin in diesem Verse] dem, was unten ist, ich bin von dem, was oben ist; ihr seid von dieser Welt, ich bin nicht von dieser Welt.
“You,” added Jesus, “are from below, I am from above; you are of this present world, I am not;
24 Daher sagte ich euch, daß ihr in euren Sünden sterben werdet; denn wenn ihr nicht glauben werdet, daß ich es bin, so werdet ihr in euren Sünden sterben.
and so I told you that you would die in your sins, for, unless you believe that I am what I am, you will die in your sins.”
25 Da sprachen sie zu ihm: Wer bist du? Und Jesus sprach zu ihnen: Durchaus das, was ich auch zu euch rede. [d. h. die Worte Jesu stellten ihm als den dar, welcher er war: die Wahrheit]
“Who are you?” they asked. “Why ask exactly what I have been telling you?” said Jesus.
26 Vieles habe ich über euch zu reden und zu richten, aber der mich gesandt hat, ist wahrhaftig; und ich, was ich von ihm gehört habe, das rede ich zu der Welt.
“I have still much that concerns you to speak of and to pass judgment on; yet he who sent me may be trusted, and I speak to the world only of the things which I have heard from him.”
27 Sie erkannten nicht, daß er von dem Vater zu ihnen sprach.
They did not understand that he meant the Father.
28 Da sprach Jesus zu ihnen: Wenn ihr den Sohn des Menschen erhöht haben werdet, dann werdet ihr erkennen, daß ich es bin, und daß ich nichts von mir selbst tue, sondern wie der Vater mich gelehrt hat, das rede ich.
So Jesus added, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will understand that I am what I am, and that I do nothing of myself, but that I say just what the Father has taught me.
29 Und der mich gesandt hat, ist mit mir; er hat mich nicht allein gelassen, weil ich allezeit das ihm Wohlgefällige tue.
Moreover, he who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone; for I always do what pleases him.”
30 Als er dies redete, glaubten viele an ihn.
While he was speaking in this way, many came to believe in him.
31 Jesus sprach nun zu den Juden, welche ihm geglaubt hatten: Wenn ihr in meinem Worte bleibet, so seid ihr wahrhaft meine Jünger;
So Jesus went on to say to those who had believed him, “If you remain constant to my message, you are truly my disciples;
32 und ihr werdet die Wahrheit erkennen, und die Wahrheit wird euch frei machen.
and you will find out the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
33 Sie antworteten ihm: Wir sind Abrahams Same und sind nie jemandes Knechte gewesen; [O. haben nie jemandem Sklavendienste getan] wie sagst du: Ihr sollt frei werden?
“We are descendants of Abraham,” was their answer, “and have never yet been in slavery to anyone. What do you mean by saying ‘you will be set free’?”
34 Jesus antwortete ihnen: Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch: Jeder, der die Sünde tut, ist der Sünde Knecht. [O. Sklave]
“In truth I tell you,” replied Jesus, “everyone who sins is a slave to sin.
35 Der Knecht [O. Sklave] aber bleibt nicht für immer in dem Hause; der Sohn bleibt für immer. (aiōn g165)
And a slave does not remain in the home always; but a son remains always. (aiōn g165)
36 Wenn nun der Sohn euch frei machen wird, so werdet ihr wirklich frei sein.
If, then, the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed!
37 Ich weiß, daß ihr Abrahams Same seid; aber ihr suchet mich zu töten, weil mein Wort nicht Raum [O. keinen Eingang, od. auch: Fortgang] in euch findet.
I know that you are descendants of Abraham; yet you are seeking to put me to death, because my message finds no place in your hearts.
38 Ich rede, was ich bei meinem Vater gesehen habe, und ihr nun tut, was ihr von eurem Vater gehört habt.
I tell you what I have myself seen in the presence of my Father; and you, in the same way, do what you have learned from your father.”
39 Sie antworteten und sprachen zu ihm: Abraham ist unser Vater. Jesus spricht zu ihnen: Wenn ihr Abrahams Kinder wäret, so würdet ihr die Werke Abrahams tun;
“Our father is Abraham,” was their answer. “If you are Abraham’s children,” replied Jesus, “do what Abraham did.
40 jetzt aber suchet ihr mich zu töten, einen Menschen, der die Wahrheit zu euch geredet hat, die ich von Gott gehört habe; das hat Abraham nicht getan.
But, as it is, you are seeking to put me to death – a man who has told you the truth as he heard it from God. Abraham did not act in that way.
41 Ihr tut die Werke eures Vaters. Da sprachen sie zu ihm: Wir sind nicht durch Hurerei geboren; wir haben einen Vater, Gott.
You are doing what your own father does.” “We are not bastards,” they said, “we have one Father – God himself.”
42 Jesus sprach zu ihnen: Wenn Gott euer Vater wäre, so würdet ihr mich lieben, [O. geliebt haben] denn ich bin von Gott ausgegangen und gekommen; denn ich bin auch nicht von mir selbst gekommen, sondern er hat mich gesandt.
“If God were your Father,” Jesus replied, “you would have loved me, for I came out from God, and now am here; and I have not come of myself, but he sent me as his messenger.
43 Warum verstehet ihr meine Sprache nicht? Weil ihr mein Wort nicht hören könnt.
How is it that you do not understand what I say? It is because you cannot bear to listen to my message.
44 Ihr seid aus dem Vater, dem Teufel, und die Begierden eures Vaters wollt ihr tun. Jener war ein Menschenmörder von Anfang und ist in der Wahrheit nicht bestanden, [O. steht nicht in der Wahrheit] weil keine Wahrheit in ihm ist. Wenn er die Lüge redet, so redet er aus seinem Eigenen, denn er ist ein Lügner und der Vater derselben. [d. i. der Lüge; O. desselben, [des Lügners]]
As for you, you are children of your father the devil, and you are determined to do what your father loves to do. He was a murderer from the first, and did not stand by the truth, because there is no truth in him. Whenever he lies, he does what is natural to him; because he is a liar, and the father of lying.
45 Weil ich aber die Wahrheit sage, glaubet ihr mir nicht.
But, as for me, it is because I speak the truth to you that you do not believe me.
46 Wer von euch überführt mich der [O. einer; W. betreffs Sünde] Sünde? Wenn ich die Wahrheit sage, warum glaubet ihr mir nicht?
Which of you can convict me of sin? Why then don’t you believe me, if I am speaking truth?
47 Wer aus Gott ist, hört die Worte Gottes. Darum höret ihr nicht, weil ihr nicht aus Gott seid.
The person who comes from God listens to God’s teaching; the reason why you do not listen is because you do not come from God.”
48 Die Juden antworteten und sprachen zu ihm: Sagen wir nicht recht, daß du ein Samariter bist und einen Dämon hast?
“Aren’t we right, after all,” replied the people, “in saying that you are a Samaritan, and are possessed by a demon?”
49 Jesus antwortete: Ich habe keinen Dämon, sondern ich ehre meinen Vater, und ihr verunehret mich.
“I am not possessed by a demon,” Jesus answered, “but I am honoring my Father; and yet you dishonor me.
50 Ich aber suche nicht meine Ehre: [O. Herrlichkeit] es ist einer, der sie sucht, und der richtet.
Not that I am seeking honor for myself; there is one who is seeking my honor, and he decides.
51 Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch: Wenn jemand mein Wort bewahren [O. halten; so auch v 52. 55] wird, so wird er den Tod nicht sehen ewiglich. (aiōn g165)
In truth I tell you, if anyone lays my message to heart, he will never really die.” (aiōn g165)
52 Da sprachen die Juden zu ihm: Jetzt erkennen wir, [O. haben wir erkannt] daß du einen Dämon hast. Abraham ist gestorben und die Propheten, und du sagst: Wenn jemand mein Wort bewahren wird, so wird er den Tod nicht schmecken ewiglich. (aiōn g165)
“Now we are sure that you are possessed by a demon,” the people replied. “Abraham died, and so did the prophets; and yet you say ‘If anyone lays my message to heart, they will never know death.’ (aiōn g165)
53 Bist du etwa größer als unser Vater Abraham, der gestorben ist? Und die Propheten sind gestorben. Was machst du aus dir selbst?
Are you greater than our ancestor Abraham, who died? And the prophets died too. Whom do you make yourself out to be?”
54 Jesus antwortete: Wenn ich mich selbst ehre, [O. verherrliche verherrlicht] so ist meine Ehre [O. Herrlichkeit] nichts; mein Vater ist es, der mich ehrt, [O. verherrliche verherrlicht] von welchem ihr saget: Er ist unser Gott.
“If I do honor to myself,” answered Jesus, “such honor counts for nothing. It is my Father who does me honor – and you say that he is your God;
55 Und ihr habt ihn nicht erkannt, ich aber kenne ihn; und wenn ich sagte: Ich kenne ihn nicht, so würde ich euch gleich sein-ein Lügner. Aber ich kenne ihn, und ich bewahre sein Wort.
and yet you have not learned to know him; but I know him; and, if I were to say that I do not know him, I should be a liar like you; but I do know him, and I lay his message to heart.
56 Abraham, euer Vater, frohlockte, daß er meinen Tag sehen sollte, und er sah ihn und freute sich.
Your ancestor Abraham rejoiced that he would see my day; and he did see it, and was glad.”
57 Da sprachen die Juden zu ihm: Du bist noch nicht fünfzig Jahre alt und hast Abraham gesehen?
“You are not fifty years old yet,” the people exclaimed, “and have you seen Abraham?”
58 Jesus sprach zu ihnen: Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch: Ehe Abraham ward, bin ich.
“In truth I tell you,” replied Jesus, “before Abraham existed I was.”
59 Da hoben sie Steine auf, damit sie auf ihn würfen. Jesus aber verbarg sich und ging aus dem Tempel [die Gebäude] hinaus.
At this they took up stones to throw at him; but Jesus hid himself, and left the Temple Courts.
