Job 41
1 Ziehst du den Leviathan [wahrscheinlich das Krokodil] herbei mit der Angel, und senkst du seine Zunge in die Angelschnur?
But wilt thou catch the serpent with a hook, and put a halter about his nose?
2 Kannst du einen Binsenstrick durch seine Nase ziehen, und seinen Kinnbacken mit einem Ringe durchbohren?
Or wilt thou fasten a ring in his nostril, and bore his lip with a clasp?
3 Wird er viel Flehens an dich richten, oder dir sanfte Worte geben?
Will he address thee with a petition? softly, with the voice of a suppliant?
4 Wird er einen Bund mit dir machen, daß du ihn zum ewigen Knechte nehmest?
And will he make a covenant with thee? and wilt thou take him for a perpetual servant?
5 Wirst du mit ihm spielen wie mit einem Vogel, und ihn anbinden für deine Mädchen?
And wilt thou play with him as with a bird? or bind him as a sparrow for a child?
6 Werden die Fischergenossen ihn verhandeln, ihn verteilen unter Kaufleute?
And do the nations feed upon him, and the nations of the Phoenicians share him?
7 Kannst du seine Haut mit Spießen füllen, und seinen Kopf mit Fischharpunen?
And all the ships come together would not be able to bear the mere skin of his tail; neither [shall they carry] his head in fishing-vessels.
8 Lege deine Hand an ihn, -gedenke des Kampfes, tue es nicht wieder!
But thou shalt lay thy hand upon him [once], remembering the war that is waged by his mouth; and let it not be done any more.
9 Siehe, eines jeden Hoffnung wird betrogen: wird man nicht schon bei seinem Anblick niedergeworfen?
Hast thou not seen him? and hast thou not wondered at the things said [of him]?
10 Niemand ist so kühn, daß er ihn aufreize. Und wer ist es, der sich vor mein Angesicht stellen dürfte?
Dost thou not fear because preparation has been made by me? for who is there that resists me?
11 Wer hat mir zuvor gegeben? und ich werde ihm vergelten. Was unter dem ganzen Himmel ist, ist mein.
Or who will resist me, and abide, since the whole [world] under heaven is mine?
12 Nicht schweigen will ich von seinen Gliedern und von seiner Kraftfülle [Eig. von dem, was seine Kraftfülle betrifft] und von der Schönheit seines Baues.
I will not be silent because of him: though because of his power [one] shall pity his antagonist.
13 Wer deckte die Oberfläche seines Gewandes auf? In sein Doppelgebiß, wer dringt da hinein?
Who will open the face of his garment? and who can enter within the fold of his breastplate?
14 Wer tat die Pforte [Eig. die Türflügel] seines Angesichts auf? Der Kreis seiner Zähne ist ein Schrecken.
Who will open the doors of his face? terror is round about his teeth.
15 Ein Stolz sind seine starken Schilder, [O. die Rinnen seiner Schilder] jedes einzelne verschlossen mit festem Siegel.
His inwards are as brazen plates, and the texture of his [skin] as a smyrite stone.
16 Eines fügt sich ans andere, und keine Luft dringt dazwischen;
One [part] cleaves fast to another, and the air cannot come between them.
17 Stück an Stück hangen sie fest zusammen, greifen ineinander und trennen sich nicht.
They will remain united each to the other: they are closely joined, and cannot be separated.
18 Sein Niesen strahlt Licht aus, und seine Augen sind gleich den Wimpern der Morgenröte.
At his sneezing a light shines, and his eyes are [as] the appearance of the morning star.
19 Aus seinem Rachen gehen Fackeln, sprühen feurige Funken hervor.
Out of his mouth proceed as it were burning lamps, and as it were hearths of fire are cast abroad.
20 Aus seinen Nüstern fährt Rauch, wie aus einem siedenden Topfe und Kessel. [O. und brennende Binsen]
Out of his nostrils proceeds smoke of a furnace burning with fire of coals.
21 Sein Hauch entzündet Kohlen, und eine Flamme fährt aus seinem Rachen.
His breath is [as] live coals, and a flame goes out of his mouth.
22 In seinem Halse wohnt Stärke, und die Angst hüpft vor ihm her.
And power is lodged in his neck, before him destruction runs.
23 Die Wampen seines Fleisches schließen an, sind ihm fest angegossen, unbeweglich.
The flesh also of his body is joined together: [if one] pours [violence] upon him, he shall not be moved.
24 Sein Herz ist hart [Eig. fest, zähe] wie Stein, und hart wie ein unterer Mühlstein.
His heart is firm as a stone, and it stands like an unyielding anvil.
25 Vor seinem Erheben fürchten sich Starke, vor Verzagtheit geraten sie außer sich.
And when he turns, [he is] a terror to the four-footed wild beasts which leap upon the earth.
26 Trifft man ihn mit dem Schwerte, es hält nicht stand, noch Speer, noch Wurfspieß, noch Harpune. [O. Wurfpfeil]
If spears should come against him, [men] will effect nothing, [either with] the spear or the breast-plate.
27 Das Eisen achtet er für Stroh, das Erz für faules Holz.
For he considers iron as chaff, and brass as rotten wood.
28 Der Pfeil jagt ihn nicht in die Flucht, Schleudersteine verwandeln sich ihm in Stoppeln.
The bow of brass shall not would him, he deems a slinger as grass.
29 Wie Stoppeln gilt ihm die Keule, und er verlacht das Sausen des Wurfspießes.
Mauls are counted as stubble; and he laughs to scorn the waving of the firebrand.
30 Unter ihm sind scharfe [Eig. schärfste] Scherben; einen Dreschschlitten breitet er hin auf den Schlamm.
His lair is [formed of] sharp points; and all the gold of the sea under him is an immense [quantity of] clay.
31 Er macht die Tiefe sieden wie einen Topf, macht das Meer wie einen Salbenkessel.
He makes the deep boil like a brazen caldron; and he regards the sea as a pot of ointment,
32 Hinter ihm leuchtet der Pfad, man könnte die Tiefe für graues Haar halten.
and the lowest part of the deep as a captive: he reckons the deep as [his] range.
33 Auf Erden ist keiner ihm gleich, der geschaffen ist ohne Furcht.
There is nothing upon the earth like to him, formed to be sported with by my angels.
34 Alles Hohe sieht er an; er ist König über alle wilden Tiere. [S. die Anm. zu Kap. 28,8]
He beholds every high thing: and he is king of all that are in the waters.
