Job 22
1 Und Eliphas, der Temaniter, antwortete und sprach:
Then answered Eliphaz the Themanite, and said,
2 Kann ein Mann Gott Nutzen bringen? Vielmehr sich selbst nützt der Einsichtige.
Can a man be serviceable unto God? Truly the intelligent is serviceable unto himself.
3 Liegt dem Allmächtigen daran, wenn du gerecht bist, oder ist es ihm ein Gewinn, wenn du deine Wege vollkommen machst?
Is it any pleasure to the Almighty that thou art righteous? or is it any gain to him, that thou makest thy ways perfect?
4 Ist es wegen deiner Gottesfurcht, daß er dich straft, mit dir ins Gericht geht?
Is it out of fear of thee that he will reproach thee? or go with thee into judgment?
5 Ist nicht deine Bosheit groß, und deiner Missetaten kein Ende?
Is not thy evil great? and no end to thy iniquities?
6 Denn du pfändetest deinen Bruder ohne Ursache, und die Kleider der Nackten zogest du aus;
For thou hast taken a pledge from thy brothers for nought, and stripped the naked of their clothing.
7 den Lechzenden tränktest du nicht mit Wasser, und dem Hungrigen verweigertest du das Brot.
Thou hast not given water to the weary to drink, and from the hungry thou hast withholden bread.
8 Und dem Manne der Gewalt, [W. des Armes] ihm gehörte das Land, und der Angesehene wohnte darin.
But as for the man of a strong arm, he obtained the land, and the highly honored could dwell therein.
9 Die Witwe schicktest du leer fort, und die Arme der Waisen wurden zermalmt. [Eig. zermalmte man]
Widows hast thou sent away empty, and the arms of the fatherless have been broken.
10 Darum sind Schlingen rings um dich her, und ein plötzlicher Schrecken macht dich bestürzt.
Therefore are snares round about thee, and sudden dread terrifieth thee.
11 Oder siehst du nicht die Finsternis und die Wasserflut, die dich bedeckt?
Or seest thou not the darkness? and the abundance of water which covereth thee?
12 Ist Gott nicht so hoch wie die Himmel? Sieh doch den Gipfel der Sterne, [d. h. die höchsten Sterne] wie erhaben sie sind!
Is not God in the height of heaven? and beholding the highest elevation of the stars, however high they are?
13 Und so sprichst du: Was sollte Gott [El] wissen? kann er richten durch Wolkendunkel hindurch?
But thou sayest, “What doth God know? can he judge behind the darkness?
14 Die Wolken sind ihm eine Hülle, daß er nicht sieht, und er durchwandelt den Kreis des Himmels.
Thick clouds are a covering for him, so that he will not see; and he walketh along on the circle of heaven.”
15 Willst du den Pfad der Vorzeit einhalten, welchen die Frevler betraten,
Wilt thou [thus] observe the path of ancient times which the men of injustice have trodden?
16 die weggerafft wurden vor der Zeit? wie ein Strom zerfloß ihr fester Grund;
Who were shrivelled up before their time, whose foundation was flooded away like a river;
17 die zu Gott [El] sprachen: Weiche von uns! und was könnte der Allmächtige für uns tun? [Eig. und was der Allmächtige für sie tun könnte]
Who said unto God, “'Depart from us:” and what wrought the Almighty for them?
18 Und doch hatte er ihre Häuser mit Wohlstand erfüllt. -Aber der Rat der Gesetzlosen sei [O. ist] fern von mir! -
And yet it was he that filled their houses with good things; but the counsel of the wicked be [still] far from me.
19 Die Gerechten sehen es und freuen sich, und der Schuldlose spottet ihrer:
The righteous will see it, and be glad; and the innocent will laugh them to scorn.
20 Sind nicht unsere Gegner vertilgt, und hat nicht Feuer ihren Überfluß gefressen?
“Is not he destroyed that rose up against us, and hath not the fire consumed what they had left?”
21 Verkehre doch freundlich mit ihm und halte [And. üb.: Versöhne [vertrage] dich, und habe] Frieden; dadurch wird Wohlfahrt über dich kommen.
Do but become acquainted with him, and be at peace: thereby will happiness come unto thee.
22 Empfange doch Belehrung aus seinem Munde, und nimm dir seine Worte zu Herzen.
Do but accept instruction from his mouth, and lay up his saying in thy heart.
23 Wenn du zu dem Allmächtigen umkehrst, so wirst du wieder aufgebaut werden; wenn du Unrecht entfernst aus deinen Zelten.
If thou return to the Almighty, thou shalt be built up, so thou wilt but remove wrong-doing far away from thy tents.
24 Und lege das Golderz in den Staub und das Gold von Ophir unter den Kies der Bäche;
And throw down in the dust precious metals, and [the gold of] Ophir to the stones of the brooks:
25 so wird der Allmächtige dein Golderz [Eig. deine Goldherze] und dein glänzendes Silber sein.
Then will the Almighty be thy precious metal, and brightly-shining silver unto thee.
26 Denn dann wirst du an dem Allmächtigen dich ergötzen und zu Gott dein Angesicht erheben.
For then wilt thou have in the Almighty thy delight, and thou canst lift up unto God thy face.
27 Du wirst zu ihm beten, und er wird dich erhören; und deine Gelübde wirst du bezahlen.
Thou wilt make entreaty unto him, and he will hear thee, and thy vows wilt thou pay.
28 Beschließest du eine Sache, so wird sie zustande kommen, und Licht wird strahlen über deinen Wegen.
And if thou decree a thing, it will be fulfilled unto thee; and upon thy ways the light will shine.
29 Wenn sie abwärts gehen, so wirst du sagen: Empor! und den, der mit gesenkten Augen einhergeht, wird er [d. h. Gott] retten.
For when men are brought low, thou wilt say, Pride [hath done it]; but those of lowly eyes [God] will help.
30 Selbst den Nicht-Schuldlosen wird er befreien: er wird befreit werden durch die Reinheit deiner Hände.
He will even deliver him who is not guiltless: and thou wilt be delivered by the purity of thy hands.
