Psalm 78
1 Eine Betrachtung Asafs. / Vernimm, mein Volk, meine Lehre, / Neigt euer Ohr meines Mundes Reden!
“A psalm of Asaph.” Give ear, O my people, to my instruction! Incline your ears to the words of my mouth!
2 Meinen Mund will ich öffnen zu Sprüchen, / Will aus der Vorzeit Rätsel verkünden.
I will open my mouth in a psalm; I will utter sayings of ancient times.
3 Was wir gehört und erfahren, / Was uns unsre Väter erzählt:
What we have heard and learned, And our fathers have told us,
4 Wollen wir unsern Kindern nicht verhehlen, / Indem wir der Nachwelt erzählen / Jahwes Ruhmestaten und Macht / Und seine Wunder, die er getan.
We will not hide from their children; Showing to the generation to come the praises of Jehovah, His might, and the wonders he hath wrought.
5 Er stellte ein Zeugnis in Jakob auf / Und gab ein Gesetz in Israel. / Unsern Vätern befahl er's an, / Daß sie ihre Kinder es lehrten.
For he appointed statutes in Jacob, And established a law in Israel, Which he commanded our fathers To make known to their children;
6 Denn die Nachkommen sollen es kennenlernen: / Kinder, die noch sollen geboren werden, / Die sollen auch selbst auftreten / Und ihren Kindern davon erzählen,
So that the generation to come might know them; The children, which should be born, and rise up, Who should declare them to their children;
7 Damit sie auf Gott ihr Vertrauen setzen, / Nicht vergessen der Taten Gottes / Und seine Gebote halten.
That they might put their trust in God, And not forget his deeds, But keep his commandments;
8 Denn sie sollen nicht werden wie ihre Väter, / Ein störrig, widerspenstig Geschlecht, / Ein Geschlecht mit schwankendem Sinn, / Das nicht treu hielt an seinem Gott.
And might not be, like their forefathers, A stubborn and rebellious generation, —A generation whose heart was not fixed upon God, And whose spirit was not steadfast toward the Almighty.
9 Efraims Söhne, gerüstete Bogenschützen, / Kehrten um am Tage der Schlacht.
The children of Ephraim were like armed bowmen, Who turn their backs in the day of battle.
10 Sie hielten nicht den Bund Elohims / Und wollten nicht wandeln nach seinem Gesetz.
They kept not the covenant of God, And refused to walk in his law;
11 Sie vergaßen seiner großen Taten, / Seiner Wunder, die sie geschaut.
And forgot his mighty deeds, And the wonders he had shown them.
12 Vor ihren Vätern hatte er Wunder getan / In Ägyptenland, in Zoans Gefild.
Marvellous things did he in the sight of their fathers, In the land of Egypt, in the field of Zoan.
13 Er teilte das Meer und führte sie durch / Und türmte die Wasser wie einen Damm.
He divided the sea, and caused them to pass through; Yea, he made the waters to stand as a heap.
14 Er leitete sie durch die Wolke bei Tag / Und die ganze Nacht mit feurigem Licht.
By day he led them by a cloud, And all the night by a light of fire.
15 Er spaltete Felsen in der Wüste / Und tränkte sie reich mit Meeresflut.
He clave the rocks in the wilderness, And gave them drink, as from the great deep.
16 Er brachte Bäche hervor aus dem Fels, / Ließ Wasser wie Ströme fließen.
From the rock he brought flowing streams, And made water to run down like rivers.
17 Doch sündigten sie weiter gegen ihn, / Widerstrebten dem Höchsten im dürren Lande.
Yet still they sinned against him, And provoked the Most High in the desert.
18 In ihrem Herzen versuchten sie Gott / Und forderten Speise für ihr Gelüst.
They tempted God in their hearts, By asking food for their delight.
19 Sie redeten so wider Elohim: / Kann Gott einen Tisch in der Wüste decken?
Yea, they spake against God, and said, “Can God spread a table in the wilderness?
20 Er hat wohl den Fels geschlagen, daß Wasser floß / Und Bäche ergiebig strömten: / Doch vermag er auch Brot zu geben / Oder Fleisch zu verschaffen seinem Volk?"
Behold! he smote the rock, and the water flowed, And streams gushed forth: Is he also able to give bread? Can he provide flesh for his people?”
21 Als Jahwe das hörte, ergrimmte er, / Und Feuer entbrannte in Jakob, / Auch Zorn stieg auf wider Israel.
When, therefore, the LORD heard this, he was wroth: So a fire was kindled against Jacob, And anger arose against Israel.
22 Denn sie glaubten nicht an Elohim, / Auf seine Hilfe vertrauten sie nicht.
Because they believed not in God, And trusted not in his aid.
23 Dennoch gebot er den Wolken droben, / Und des Himmels Türen öffnete er:
Yet he had commanded the clouds above, And had opened the doors of heaven;
24 Er ließ Man auf sie regnen zur Speise / Und gab ihnen Himmelsbrot.
And had rained down upon them manna for food, And had given them the corn of heaven.
25 Engelspeise aßen sie alle, / Zehrung sandte er ihnen in Fülle.
Every one ate the food of princes; He sent them bread to the full.
26 Er ließ den Ostwind am Himmel wehn, / Führte durch seine Macht den Südwind herbei.
Then he caused a strong wind to blow in the heavens, And by his power he brought a south wind;
27 Er ließ Fleisch auf sie regnen wie Staub / Und beschwingte Vögel wie Sand am Meer.
He rained down flesh upon them as dust, And feathered fowls as the sand of the sea.
28 In ihr Lager ließ er sie fallen, / Rings um ihre Gezelte her.
He caused them to fall in the midst of their camp, Round about their habitations.
29 Da aßen sie, wurden übersatt / Und ihr Gelüst befriedigte er.
So they did eat, and were filled; For he gave them their own desire.
30 Aber noch war ihre Lust nicht gestillt, / Noch war die Speise in ihrem Mund:
Their desire was not yet satisfied, And their meat was yet in their mouths,
31 Da stieg Elohims Zorn wider sie auf — / Er streckte ihre Starken zu Boden, / Schlug nieder die Jünglinge Israels.
When the wrath of God came upon them, And slew their strong men, And smote down the chosen men of Israel.
32 Trotz alledem sündigten sie aber fort / Und glaubten an seine Wunder nicht.
For all this they sinned still, And put no trust in his wondrous works.
33 Drum ließ er ihre Tage schwinden in Nichts / Und ihre Jahre in jäher Hast.
Therefore he consumed their days in vanity, And their years in sudden destruction.
34 Wenn er sie tötete, suchten sie ihn, / Kehrten um und fragten nach Gott,
When he slew them, they sought him; They returned, and sought earnestly for God;
35 Gedachten, wie Elohim ihr Fels / Und Gott der Höchste ihr Retter sei.
And remembered that God was their rock, And the Most High their redeemer.
36 Doch heuchelten sie ihm mit ihrem Mund, / Mit ihrer Zunge logen sie ihm.
But they only flattered him with their mouths, And spake falsely to him with their tongues.
37 Ihr Herz war ihm nicht treu, / Sie hielten nicht fest an seinem Bund.
For their hearts were not true to him, Nor were they steadfast in his covenant.
38 Doch er war barmherzig, vergab die Schuld / Und vertilgte sie nicht. / Oft hielt er seinen Zorn zurück, / Ließ nicht seinen ganzen Grimm ergehn,
Yet, being full of compassion, he forgave their iniquity, And would not utterly destroy them; Often he restrained his indignation, And stirred not up all his anger.
39 Sondern dachte daran: sie sind nur Fleisch, / Ein Hauch, der vergeht und nicht wiederkehrt.
He remembered that they were but flesh, —A breath, that passeth and cometh not back.
40 Wie oft widerstrebten sie ihm in der Wüste, / Betrübten sie ihn in der Öde!
How often did they provoke him in the wilderness! How often did they anger him in the desert!
41 Immer wieder versuchten sie Gott, / Den Heiligen Israels kränkten sie.
Again and again they tempted God, And offended the Holy One of Israel.
42 Sie gedachten nicht seiner Hand, / Auch nicht des Tages, da er sie erlöste von ihrem Dränger:
They remembered not his hand, Nor the day when he delivered them from the enemy;
43 Als er in Ägypten Zeichen tat, / Seine Wunder in Zoans Gefild.
What signs he had wrought in Egypt, And what wonders in the fields of Zoan.
44 Er wandelte ihre Ströme in Blut, / Daß sie ihr Wasser nicht trinken konnten.
He turned their rivers into blood, So that they could not drink of their streams.
45 Er sandte ihnen Bremsen, die sie fraßen, / Und Frösche, die sie verderbten.
He sent amongst them flies, which devoured them, And frogs, which destroyed them.
46 Er gab ihr Gewächs den Nagern preis, / Den Heuschrecken ihrer Felder Ertrag.
He gave also their fruits to the caterpillar, And their labor to the locust.
47 Ihre Weinstöcke schlug er mit Hagel, / Ihre Maulbeerbäume mit Schlossen.
He destroyed their vines with hail, And their sycamore-trees with frost.
48 Dem Hagel lieferte er aus ihr Vieh / Und ihre Herden den Blitzen.
He also gave up their cattle to hail, And their flocks to hot thunderbolts.
49 Er sandte gegen sie seines Zornes Glut / Mit Ingrimm, Wüten und Angst: / Eine Schar verderbender Engel.
He sent against them the fierceness of his anger, Wrath, indignation, and woe, —A host of angels of evil.
50 Er ließ seinem Zorne freien Lauf, / Bewahrte sie nicht vor dem Tode, / Sondern gab der Pest ihr Leben preis.
He made a way for his anger, He spared them not from death, But gave up their lives to the pestilence.
51 Er schlug alle Erstgeburt in Ägypten, / Die erste Manneskraft in Hams Gezelt.
He smote all the firstborn in Egypt; The first-fruits of their strength in the tents of Ham.
52 Sein Volk aber ließ er wie Schafe ziehn / Und leitete sie in der Wüste wie eine Herde.
But he led forth his own people like sheep, And guided them like a flock in the wilderness.
53 Er führte sie sicher, daß sie nicht zagten; / Ihre Feinde aber bedeckte das Meer.
He led them on safely, so that they feared not, While the sea overwhelmed their enemies.
54 Er brachte sie in sein heilig Gebiet, / Auf den Berg, den seine Rechte erworben.
He brought them to his own sacred border, Even to this mountain which his right hand had gained.
55 Völker trieb er vor ihnen aus, / Gab ihnen ihr Land zum Erbbesitz, / Und in ihren Zelten ließ er Israels Stämme wohnen.
He cast out the nations before them, And divided their land by a measuring-line, as an inheritance, And caused the tribes of Israel to dwell in their tents.
56 Doch sie versuchten und reizten Elohim den Höchsten, / Und seine Gebote hielten sie nicht.
Yet they tempted and provoked God, the Most High, And kept not his statutes;
57 Sondern wie ihre Väter wichen sie treulos ab, / Versagten wie ein trüglicher Bogen.
Like their fathers they were faithless, and turned back; They turned aside, like a deceitful bow.
58 Sie erzürnten ihn durch ihre Höhn, / Durch ihre Bilder reizten sie ihn.
They provoked his anger by their high places, And stirred up his jealousy by their graven images.
59 Das hörte Elohim und zürnte: / Er verwarf Israel ganz und gar.
God saw this, and was wroth, And greatly abhorred Israel;
60 Er verließ die Wohnung in Silo, / Das Zelt, das er unter Menschen errichtet.
So that he forsook the habitation at Shiloh, The tabernacle where he dwelt among men,
61 Er ließ seine Macht gefangennehmen / Und gab seinen Ruhm in des Feindes Hand.
And delivered his strength into captivity, And his glory into the hand of the enemy.
62 Er gab sein Volk dem Schwerte preis, / Und über sein Erbe zürnte er.
His own people he gave up to the sword, And was wroth with his own inheritance.
63 Ihre Jünglinge fraß das Feuer, / Ihren Jungfraun ward kein Hochzeitslied.
Fire consumed their young men, And their maidens did not bewail them.
64 Ihre Priester fielen durchs Schwert, / Und ihre Witwen weinten nicht.
Their priests fell by the sword, And their widows made no lamentation.
65 Da erwachte Adonái wie vom Schlaf, / Wie ein Held, dessen Mut der Wein gestärkt.
But at length the Lord awaked as from sleep, As a hero who had been overpowered by wine;
66 Er schlug seine Feinde zurück, / Tat ihnen ewige Schande an.
He smote his enemies, and drove them back, And covered them with everlasting disgrace.
67 Josefs Zelt verwarf er zwar, / Und Efraims Stamm erwählte er nicht.
Yet he rejected the tents of Joseph, And chose not the tribe of Ephraim;
68 Sondern Judas Stamm erkor er, / Den Zionsberg, den er liebgewonnen.
But chose the tribe of Judah, The Mount Zion which he loved;
69 Er baute hochragend sein Heiligtum, / Wie die Erde, die er auf ewig gegründet.
Where he built, like the heavens, his sanctuary; Like the earth, which he hath established for ever.
70 Er erwählte sich David, seinen Knecht, / Nahm ihn von den Hürden der Schafe.
And he chose David, his servant, And took him from the sheepfolds;
71 Von den säugenden Schafen holte er ihn, / Daß er weide Jakob, sein Volk, / Und sein Erbteil Israel.
From tending the suckling ewes he brought him To feed Jacob his people, And Israel his inheritance.
72 Er weidete sie auch mit lauterm Sinn / Und führte sie klug mit seiner Hand.
He fed them with an upright heart, And guided them with skilful hands.
