Psalm 10
1 Lang schon, Jahwe, stehst du fern! / Warum verbirgst du dich zur Zeit der Not?
Why do you stand far off, LORD? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble?
2 Beim Übermut der Frevler muß sich der Dulder ängsten: / Möchten sie gefangen werden in den Ränken, die sie ausgedacht!
In arrogance, the wicked hunt down the weak. They are caught in the schemes that they devise.
3 Denn der Frevler rühmt sich des, was sein Herz begehrt, / Der Ungerechte schmäht und höhnet Jahwe.
For the wicked boasts of his heart's cravings, and he blesses the greedy, scorning the LORD.
4 Der Böse denkt in seinem Stolz: "Er strafet nicht; / Es ist kein Gott!" Dahin geht all sein Denken.
The wicked in his proud countenance does not seek. All his thoughts are "There is no God."
5 Was er sich vornimmt, das gelingt ihm stets; / Es bleiben deine Strafgerichte himmelweit entfernt von ihm. / All seine Widersacher schnaubt er zornig an.
His ways are firm at all times. Your judgments are turned aside. As for all his adversaries, he sneers at them.
6 Er denkt: "Ich wanke nimmer, / Für alle Zukunft komm ich nicht in Not."
He says in his heart, "I shall not be shaken. From generation to generation I shall not experience calamity."
7 Sein Mund ist voll Verwünschung, Lug und Trug; / An seiner Zunge kleben Unheil und Verderben.
His mouth is full of cursing and bitterness and oppression. Under his tongue is mischief and iniquity.
8 Er liegt im Hinterhalt in den Gehöften, / Er mordet insgeheim Unschuldige; / Es spähen seine Augen nach den Schwachen.
He lies in wait near the villages. From ambushes, he murders the innocent. His eyes are secretly set against the helpless.
9 Er lauert im Versteck gleich einem Löwen, der im Dickicht liegt, / Er lauert, um den Armen zu erhaschen, / Er hascht den Armen, schleift ihn weg in seinem Netz.
He lurks in secret as a lion in his ambush. He lies in wait to catch the helpless. He catches the helpless, when he draws him in his net.
10 Er duckt sich, kauert nieder, / In seine Klauen fallen die Wehrlosen.
The helpless are crushed. They collapse. They fall under his strength.
11 Er denkt in seinem Herzen: "Gott vergißt es, / Verbirgt sein Antlitz, sieht es nimmer."
He says in his heart, "God has forgotten. He hides his face. He will never see it."
12 Komm, stehe auf, o Jahwe El!, erhebe deine Hand! / Vergiß nicht der Gebeugten!
Arise, LORD. God, lift up your hand. Do not forget the helpless.
13 Warum darf denn der Frevler lästern Elohim, / In seinem Herzen denken: "Nun, du strafst doch nicht?"
Why does the wicked person condemn God, and say in his heart, "You will not seek (an accounting)."
14 Richtend aber siehst du es, du schauest Müh und Herzeleid, / Um sie (den Frevlern) zu vergelten! / Auf dich verlässet sich der Schwache, / Und dem Verwaisten zeigst du dich als Helfer.
But you do see trouble and grief. You consider it to take it into your hand. You help the victim and the fatherless.
15 Schmettre doch des Frevlers Arm zu Boden! / Des Bösen Unrecht strafe, daß er vor dir schwinde!
Break the arm of the wicked. As for the evil man, seek out his wickedness until you find none.
16 Jahwe ist König auf immer und ewig, / Die Heiden verschwinden aus seinem Land.
The LORD is King forever and ever. The nations have perished from his land.
17 Treulich hörst du, o Jahwe, den Wunsch der Dulder, / Du stärkest ihr Herz, du neigest ihnen dein Ohr.
LORD, you have heard the desire of the humble. You will prepare their heart. You will cause your ear to hear,
18 Schaffst du den Waisen, den Bedrückten Recht, / So wird der Mensch, der Erdenwurm, nicht länger trotzen.
to judge the fatherless and the oppressed, that man who is of the earth may terrify no more.
