Matthaeus 14
1 Um jene Zeit hörte der Vierfürst Herodes von Jesus,
In that season, heard Herod the tetrarch, the fame of Jesus:
2 und er sprach zu seinen Hofleuten: "Das ist Johannes der Täufer! Der ist von den Toten auferstanden, darum sind die Wunderkräfte in ihm wirksam."
and he said unto his servants—This, is John the Immerser, —he hath arisen from the dead, for this cause, are the powers working mightily within him.
3 Herodes hatte nämlich damals Johannes ergreifen, mit Ketten binden und gefangensetzen lassen wegen Herodias, der Frau seines Bruders Philippus.
For, Herod, seizing John, had bound him, and, in prison, put him away, —because of Herodias, the wife of Philip his brother;
4 Denn Johannes hatte ihm gesagt: "Du darfst sie nicht zur Frau haben."
for John had been saying to him, It is not allowed thee, to have her.
5 Er hätte ihn nun gern getötet; aber er scheute sich vor dem Volke, denn das hielt ihn für einen Propheten.
And desiring, to kill, him, he feared the multitude, because, as a prophet, they held him.
6 Da geschah es bei der Geburtstagsfeier des Herodes, daß die Tochter der Herodias vor den Gästen tanzte. Das gefiel Herodes so sehr,
But, a birthday feast of Herod taking place, the daughter of Herodias danced in the midst, and pleased Herod;
7 daß er ihr eidlich versprach, er wolle ihr geben, um was sie bitte.
wherefore, with an oath, he promised to give her, whatsoever she should ask for herself;
8 Da sprach sie, von ihrer Mutter dazu angestiftet: "Gib mir hier auf einer Schüssel das Haupt Johannes des Täufers!"
and, she, being led on by her mother, —Give me (saith she) here, upon a charger, the head of John the Immerser.
9 Darüber ward der König betrübt. Doch um des Eides und der Tischgenossen willen befahl er's ihr zu geben.
And the king, though grieved, yet, because of the oaths and the guests, ordered it to be given;
10 So sandte er denn hin und ließ Johannes in seinem Kerker enthaupten.
and sent and beheaded John in the prison.
11 Sein Haupt ward dann auf einer Schüssel hergebracht und dem Mädchen gegeben; die brachte es ihrer Mutter.
And his head was brought upon a charger, and given unto the maiden, and she brought it to her mother.
12 Und seine Jünger kamen, holten seinen Leichnam und begruben ihn. Dann gingen sie hin und gaben Jesus Bericht.
And his disciples, going near, bare away the corpse, and buried him, and came and brought tidings unto Jesus.
13 Auf diese Kunde entfernte sich Jesus von dort in einem Boot nach einer unbewohnten Gegend, um allein zu sein. Aber die Leute hörten davon und gingen ihm zu Fuß aus den Städten nach.
And Jesus, hearing it, retired from thence in a boat, into a desert place, apart, —and the multitudes, hearing of it, followed him on foot from the cities.
14 Als nun Jesus aus dem Fahrzeug stieg, empfand er tiefes Mitleid bei dem Anblick der großen Menge, und er heilte ihre Kranken.
And, coming forth, he saw a great multitude, —and was moved with compassion over them, and cured their sick.
15 Am Abend traten seine Jünger zu ihm und sprachen: "Die Gegend hier ist unbewohnt, und es ist schon spät. Laß deshalb die Leute ziehen, damit sie in die nächsten Dörfer gehen und sich Lebensmittel kaufen."
And, evening, arriving, the disciples came unto him, saying—The place is, a desert, and, the hour, hath already passed, —dismiss the multitudes, that they may go away into the villages, and buy themselves food.
16 Jesus antwortete ihnen: "Sie brauchen nicht zu gehen; gebt ihr ihnen zu essen!"
But, Jesus, said unto them, No need, have they to go away, —give, ye, them to eat.
17 Sie erwiderten ihm: "Wir haben hier nichts weiter als fünf Brote und zwei Fische."
But, they, say unto him—We have nothing here, save five loaves and two fishes.
18 Er sprach: "Bringt sie mir her!"
But, he, said—Bring, them, to me, here.
19 Und er ließ die Leute sich auf dem Gras lagern. Nun nahm er die fünf Brote und die beiden Fische, sah auf zum Himmel und sprach den Lobpreis. Dann brach er die Brote und gab sie seinen Jüngern, die Jünger aber reichten sie den Leuten.
And, giving orders that the multitudes should recline upon the grass, —taking the five loaves and the two fishes, —looking up into the heaven, he blessed; and, breaking, gave, the disciples, the loaves, and the disciples unto the multitude.
20 So aßen alle und wurden satt. Die übriggebliebenen Brocken hob man vom Boden auf: zwölf große Körbe voll.
And they did all eat, and were filled, —and they took up the remainder of the broken pieces, twelve baskets, full.
21 Es hatten aber ungefähr fünftausend Mann gegessen, ohne die Frauen und Kinder.
And, they who did eat, were about five thousand, men, besides women and children.
22 Nun drängte er seine Jünger, sofort in das Boot zu gehen und an das andere Ufer vorauszufahren während er das Volk entlassen wollte.
And [straightway] constrained he the disciples to enter into a boat, and be going before him unto the other side, while he dismissed the multitudes.
23 Als dies geschehen, ging er auf die Bergeshöhe, um in der Einsamkeit zu beten. Beim Eintritt der Dunkelheit war er dort allein.
And, dismissing the multitudes, he went up into the mountain, apart, to pray, —and when, evening, came, alone, was he, there.
24 Inzwischen war das Boot schon mitten auf dem See und mußte heftig mit den Wellen kämpfen, denn es fuhr gegen den Wind.
Now, the boat, still many furlongs from the land, was holding off, being distressed by the waves, —for, the wind, was, contrary.
25 Da, in der vierten Nachtwache, kam er, über den See hingehend, auf sie zu.
And, in the fourth watch of the night, he came unto them, walking upon the sea.
26 Als ihn die Jünger so auf dem See wandeln sahen, waren sie entsetzt; denn sie dachten, es wäre ein Gespenst, und sie schrien laut vor Furcht.
And, the disciples, seeing him, upon the lake walking, were troubled, —saying—It is, a ghost; and, by reason of their fear, they cried out.
27 Aber alsbald rief ihnen Jesus zu: "Seid getrost, ich bin's, fürchtet euch nicht!"
And, straightway, Jesus spake unto them, saying—Take courage! it is, I,—be not afraid.
28 Da antwortete ihm Petrus: "Herr, bist du es, so laß mich auf dem Wasser zu dir kommen."
And, making answer, Peter said unto him, —Lord! if it is, thou, bid me come unto thee, upon the waters.
29 Er sprach: "Komm!" Da stieg Petrus aus dem Boot und ging auf dem Wasser zu Jesus hin.
And, he, said—Come! And, descending from the boat, Peter walked upon the waters, and came unto Jesus.
30 Als er aber den starken Wind spürte, ward ihm bange, und er begann zu sinken. Da schrie er auf: "Herr, hilf mir!"
But, seeing the wind, he was affrighted, and, beginning to sink, cried out, saying—Lord! save me!
31 Sofort streckte Jesus seine Hand aus, ergriff ihn und sprach zu ihm: "Du Kleingläubiger, warum hast du gezweifelt?"
And, straightway, Jesus, stretching forth his hand, laid hold upon him and saith unto him—O little-of-faith! why didst thou doubt?
32 Dann stiegen sie beide in das Boot, und er Wind legte sich.
And, when they came up into the boat, the wind abated.
33 Die anderen aber, die im Boot waren, fielen vor ihm nieder und sprachen: "Du bist wahrhaftig Gottes Sohn!"
And, they in the boat, bowed down to him, saying—Truly, God’s Son, thou art!
34 Als sie die Überfahrt vollendet hatten, stiegen sie ans Land und kamen nach Genezaret.
And, going across, they came up the land, into Gennesaret.
35 Sobald ihn die Bewohner dieser Gegend erkannten, schickten sie Boten in den ganzen Umkreis.
And, recognizing him, the men of that place, sent out into all that region, and they brought unto him all who were sick;
36 Da brachte man ihm alle Kranken und bat ihn, daß sie nur die Quaste seines Mantels berühren dürften. Und alle, die sie berührten, wurden gesund.
and were beseeching [him], that they might, only, touch the border of his mantle, and, as many as touched, were made quite well.
