Johannes 18
1 Nach diesen Worten ging Jesus mit seinen Jüngern hinaus über den Kidronbach. Dort war ein Garten. In den trat Jesus mit seinen Jüngern.
After offering this prayer Jesus went out with His disciples to a place on the further side of the Ravine of the Cedars, where there was a garden which He entered--Himself and His disciples.
2 Auch Judas, sein Verräter, kannte diesen Ort; denn Jesus hatte sich oft mit seinen Jüngern dorthin begeben.
Now Judas also, who at that very time was betraying Him, knew the place, for Jesus had often resorted there with His disciples.
3 Judas nahm nun eine Abteilung Soldaten nebst der Mannschaft, die die Hohenpriester und die Pharisäer stellten, unter sein Geleit und kam mit dieser Schar, die Fackeln, Lampen und Waffen trugen, an jenen Ort.
So Judas, followed by the battalion and by a detachment of the Temple police sent by the High Priests and Pharisees, came there with torches and lamps and weapons.
4 Jesus wußte alles, was über ihn kommen sollte. So trat er denn hinaus und fragte sie: "Wen sucht ihr?"
Jesus therefore, knowing all that was about to befall Him, went out to meet them. "Who are you looking for?" He asked them.
5 Sie antworteten ihm: "Jesus von Nazaret." Jesus sprach zu ihnen: "Ich bin's!" Judas, sein Verräter, stand auch bei ihnen.
"For Jesus the Nazarene," was the answer. "I am he," He replied. (Now Judas who was betraying Him was also standing with them.)
6 Als nun Jesus zu ihnen sprach: "Ich bin's", da prallten sie zurück und fielen zu Boden.
As soon then as He said to them, "I am he," they went backwards and fell to the ground.
7 Dann fragte er sie nochmals: "Wen sucht ihr?" Sie sprachen: "Jesus von Nazaret."
Again therefore He asked them, "Who are you looking for?" "For Jesus the Nazarene," they said.
8 Jesus erwiderte: "Ich habe euch gesagt, daß ich es bin. Sucht ihr nun mich, so laßt diese ihres Weges gehen!"
"I have told you," replied Jesus, "that I am he. If therefore you are looking for me, let these my disciples go their way."
9 Das sagte er, damit sein Ausspruch sich erfülle: "Von denen, die du mir gegeben, habe ich keinen verloren."
He made this request in order that the words He had spoken might be fulfilled, "As for those whom Thou hast given me, I have not lost one."
10 Simon Petrus trug ein Schwert. Das zog er, schlug nach des Hohenpriesters Knecht und hieb ihm das rechte Ohr ab. Der Knecht hieß Malchus.
Simon Peter, however, having a sword, drew it, and, aiming at the High Priest's servant, cut off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus.
11 Jesus aber sprach zu Petrus: "Stecke das Schwert in die Scheide! Soll ich den Kelch nicht trinken, den mir der Vater gereicht hat?"
Jesus therefore said to Peter, "Put back your sword. Shall I refuse to drink the cup of sorrow which the Father has given me to drink?"
12 Die Soldatentruppe mit ihrem Oberhauptmann und die Mannschaft des Hohen Rates ergriffen Jesus und banden ihn.
So the battalion and their tribune and the Jewish police closed in, and took Jesus and bound Him.
13 Man führte ihn zuerst zu Hannas. Dies war der Schwiegervater des Kaiphas, der in jenem Jahr Hoherpriester war.
They then brought Him to Annas first; for Annas was the father-in-law of Caiaphas who was High Priest that year.
14 Kaiphas aber war es, der den Juden geraten hatte: "Es ist gut, daß ein Mensch für das Volk zugrunde gehe."
(It was this Caiaphas who had advised the Jews, saying, "It is to your interest that one man should die for the People.")
15 Simon Petrus aber und ein anderer Jünger folgten Jesus. Dieser Jünger war mit dem Hohenpriester bekannt und trat darum mit Jesus in den Hof des hohenpriesterlichen Palastes,
Meanwhile Simon Peter was following Jesus, and so also was another disciple. The latter was known to the High Priest, and went in with Jesus into the court of the High Priest's palace.
16 während Petrus draußen an der Pforte stehen blieb. Da ging der andere Jünger, der mit dem Hohenpriester bekannt war, hinaus, redete mit der Pförtnerin und führte Petrus in den Hof.
But Peter remained standing outside the door, till the disciple who was acquainted with the High Priest came out and induced the portress to let Peter in.
17 Da sprach die Magd, die den Dienst als Pförtnerin versah, zu Petrus: "Bist du nicht auch ein Jünger dieses Menschen?" Er sagte: "Nein!"
This led the girl, the portress, to ask Peter, "Are you also one of this man's disciples?" "No, I am not," he replied.
18 Die Knechte und die Mannschaft standen um ein Kohlenfeuer, das sie der Kälte wegen angezündet hatten, und wärmten sich. Auch Petrus stand bei ihnen und wärmte sich.
Now because it was cold the servants and the police had lighted a charcoal fire, and were standing and warming themselves; and Peter too remained with them, standing and warming himself.
19 Der Hohepriester fragte nun Jesus wegen seiner Jünger und seiner Lehre.
So the High Priest questioned Jesus about His disciples and His teaching.
20 Jesus antwortete ihm: "Ich habe ja frei und offen zu aller Welt geredet. Ich habe stets gelehrt in den Versammlungshäusern und im Tempel, wo sich alle Juden einzufinden pflegen, und im geheimen habe ich nichts verkündigt.
"As for me," replied Jesus, "I have spoken openly to the world. I have continually taught in some synagogue or in the Temple where all the Jews are wont to assemble, and I have said nothing in secret.
21 Warum fragst du mich? Frage meine Hörer, was ich zu ihnen geredet habe; sie wissen ja, was ich gesagt."
Why do you question me? Question those who heard what it was I said to them: these witnesses here know what I said."
22 Als Jesus dies entgegnete, gab ihm einer von den Dienern, der bei ihm stand, einen Schlag ins Gesicht, indem er sprach: "So antwortest du dem Hohenpriester?"
Upon His saying this, one of the officers standing by struck Him with his open hand, asking Him as he did so, "Is that the way you answer the High Priest?"
23 Jesus erwiderte ihm: "Habe ich unrecht geredet, so beweise mir das Unrecht! Ist meine Antwort aber recht, warum schlägst du mich?"
"If I have spoken wrongly," replied Jesus, "bear witness to it as wrong; but if rightly, why that blow?"
24 Hannas sandte ihn dann gefesselt zu dem Hohenpriester Kaiphas.
So Annas sent Him bound to Caiaphas the High Priest.
25 Simon Petrus stand inzwischen da und wärmte sich. Da fragte man ihn: "Gehörst du nicht auch zu seinen Jüngern?" Er leugnete aber und sagte: "Nein!"
But Simon Peter remained standing and warming himself, and this led to their asking him, "Are you also one of his disciples?" He denied it, and said, "No, I am not."
26 Da sprach einer von des Hohenpriesters Knechten, ein Verwandter dessen, dem Petrus das Ohr abgehauen hatte: "Habe ich dich nicht im Garten bei ihm gesehen?"
One of the High Priest's servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, said, "Did I not see you in the garden with him?"
27 Petrus leugnete abermals. Plötzlich krähte ein Hahn.
Once more Peter denied it, and immediately a cock crowed.
28 Von Kaiphas führte man Jesus in die Statthalterei. Der Tag begann zu grauen. Die Juden selbst betraten den Statthalterpalast nicht, damit sie vor Verunreinigung bewahrt blieben und das Passah essen könnten.
So they brought Jesus from Caiaphas's house to the Praetorium. It was the early morning, and they would not enter the Praetorium themselves for fear of defilement, and in order that they might be able to eat the Passover.
29 So ging denn Pilatus zu ihnen hinaus und fragte sie: "Welche Anklage erhebt ihr gegen diesen Menschen?"
Accordingly Pilate came out to them and inquired, "What accusation have you to bring against this man?"
30 Sie antworteten ihm: "Wäre der Mann nicht ein Verbrecher, wir hätten ihn dir nicht ausgeliefert."
"If the man were not a criminal," they replied, "we would not have handed him over to you."
31 Da sprach Pilatus zu ihnen: "Dann nehmt ihr ihn hin und sprecht ihm nach euerm Gesetz das Urteil!" Die Juden aber erwiderten ihm: "Wir haben nicht das Recht, ein Todesurteil zu vollstrecken."
"Take him yourselves," said Pilate, "and judge him by your Law." "We have no power," replied the Jews, "to put any man to death."
32 So mußte sich jener Ausspruch Jesu erfüllen, worin er darauf hinwies, welches Todes er sterben sollte.
They said this that the words might be fulfilled in which Jesus predicted the kind of death He was to die.
33 Pilatus ging in den Palast zurück, ließ Jesus rufen und fragte ihn: "Du bist der Juden König?"
Re-entering the Praetorium, therefore, Pilate called Jesus and asked Him, "Are you the King of the Jews?"
34 Jesus antwortete: "Meinst du das selbst, oder haben es dir andere von mir gesagt?"
"Do you say this of yourself, or have others told it you about me?" replied Jesus.
35 Pilatus entgegnete: "Bin ich denn ein Jude? Dein eigen Volk und namentlich die Hohenpriester haben dich mir überliefert. Was hast du getan?"
"Am I a Jew?" exclaimed Pilate; "it is your own nation and the High Priests who have handed you over to me. What have you done?"
36 Jesus erwiderte: "Mein Königtum stammt nicht aus dieser Welt. Stammte mein Königtum aus dieser Welt, meine Mannen hätten sich voll Mut zur Wehr gesetzt, daß ich nicht den Juden preisgegeben wäre. Nun aber stammt mein Königtum nicht von dieser Erde."
"My kingdom," replied Jesus, "does not belong to this world. If my kingdom did belong to this world, my subjects would have resolutely fought to save me from being delivered up to the Jews. But, as a matter of fact, my kingdom has not this origin."
37 "Also bist du doch ein König?" fragte ihn Pilatus. "Ja, du hast recht, ich bin ein König", war Jesu Antwort. "Dazu bin ich geboren, und dazu bin ich aufgetreten in der Welt, um Zeugnis für die Wahrheit abzulegen. Wer ein Freund der Wahrheit ist, der hört auf meine Stimme."
"So then you are a king!" rejoined Pilate. "Yes," said Jesus, "you say truly that I am a king. For this purpose I was born, and for this purpose I have come into the world--to give testimony for the truth. Every one who is a friend of the truth listens to my voice."
38 "Was ist Wahrheit?" entgegnete ihm Pilatus. Nach dieser Antwort ging er wieder zu den Juden hinaus und sprach zu ihnen:
"What is truth?" said Pilate. But no sooner had he spoken the words than he went out again to the Jews and told them, "I find no crime in him.
39 "Ich finde keine Schuld an ihm. Es ist aber Brauch bei euch, daß ich euch am Passahfest einen Gefangenen losgebe. Soll ich euch nun den Judenkönig losgeben?"
But you have a custom that I should release one prisoner to you at the Passover. So shall I release to you the King of the Jews?"
40 Da fingen sie wieder an zu schreien: "Nein, nicht den, sondern Barabbas!" Barabbas aber war ein Räuber.
With a roar of voices they again cried out, saying, "Not this man, but Barabbas!" Now Barabbas was a robber.
