Apostelgeschichte 27
1 Als unsere Abfahrt nach Italien beschlossen war, übergab man Paulus mit einigen anderen Gefangenen einem Hauptmann, namens Julius, der einer kaiserlichen Truppe angehörte.
Now when it was decided that we should sail for Italy, they handed over Paul and a few other prisoners into the custody of Julius, a Captain of the Augustan battalion;
2 Wir gingen an Bord eines Schiffes aus Adramyttium, das die Häfen der Provinz Asien anlaufen wollte, und fuhren ab; der Mazedonier Aristarch aus Thessalonich begleitete uns. Sept. 57 n. Chr.
and going on board a ship of Adramyttium which was about to sail to the ports of the province of Asia, we put to sea; Aristarchus, the Macedonian, from Thessalonica, forming one of our party.
3 Tags darauf legten wir in Sidon an, und Julius, der Paulus gütig behandelte, erlaubte ihm, seine Freunde zu besuchen und ihre liebevolle Pflege zu genießen.
The next day we put in at Sidon. There Julius treated Paul with thoughtful kindness and allowed him to visit his friends and profit by their generous care.
4 Dann gingen wir wieder in See und fuhren an der Küste von Zypern vorbei, weil wir Gegenwind hatten.
Putting to sea again, we sailed under the lee of Cyprus, because the winds were against us;
5 Als wir das Meer längs der Küste Ziliziens und Pamphyliens durchfahren hatten, kamen wir nach Myra in Lyzien.
and, sailing the whole length of the sea that lies off Cilicia and Pamphylia, we reached Myra in Lycia.
6 Dort fand der Hauptmann ein Schiff aus Alexandria, das auf der Fahrt nach Italien war, und ließ uns da an Bord gehen.
There Julius found an Alexandrian ship bound for Italy, and put us on board of her.
7 Mehrere Tage hindurch ging die Fahrt nur langsam vorwärts, und mit Mühe kamen wir in die Nähe von Knidus. Da uns der Gegenwind nicht in gerader Richtung weiterfahren ließ, steuerten wir an der Küste Kretas hin auf Salmone zu.
It took several days of slow sailing for us to come with difficulty off Cnidus; from which point, as the wind did not allow us to get on in the direct course, we ran under the lee of Crete by Salmone.
8 Als wir mit Schwierigkeiten an der Küste vorbeigekommen waren, gelangten wir in eine Bucht, namens Schönhafen, nahe bei der Stadt Lasäa.
Then, coasting along with difficulty, we reached a place called 'Fair Havens,' near the town of Lasea.
9 Unsere Reise dauerte nun schon ziemlich lange, und die Schiffahrt war bereits gefährlich, wie auch die Zeit des großen Fastens schon vorüber war. Darum warnte Paulus (vor der Weiterfahrt).
Our voyage thus far had occupied a considerable time, and the navigation being now unsafe and the Fast also already over, Paul warned them.
10 "Ihr Männer", sprach er, "ich sehe voraus, daß die Fahrt nicht nur für unser Leben Gefahr und großen Schaden bringen wird."
"Sirs," he said, "I perceive that before long the voyage will be attended with danger and heavy loss, not only to the cargo and the ship but to our own lives also."
11 Der Hauptmann aber glaubte dem Steuermann und dem Schiffseigentümer mehr als dem, was Paulus sagte.
But Julius let himself be persuaded by the pilot and by the owner rather than by Paul's arguments;
12 Weil überdies der Hafen zum Überwintern nicht geeignet war, so fand es die Mehrzahl geraten, weiterzufahren und zu versuchen, ob man nicht Phönix — einen Hafen an der Küste von Kreta, der gegen den Südwest- und Nordwestwind geschützt ist — erreichen könne, um da zu überwintern.
and as the harbour was inconvenient for wintering in, the majority were in favour of putting out to sea, to try whether they could get to Phoenix--a harbour on the coast of Crete facing north-east and south-east--to winter there.
13 Da nur ein schwacher Südwind wehte, so glaubten sie, ihr Vorhaben sicher ausführen zu können. Sie lichteten die Anker und fuhren ganz dicht an der Küste von Kreta hin.
And a light breeze from the south sprang up, so that they supposed they were now sure of their purpose. So weighing anchor they ran along the coast of Crete, hugging the shore.
14 Bald darauf aber brauste von dem Hochgebirge der Insel ein furchtbarer Nordoststurm daher.
But it was not long before a furious north-east wind, coming down from the mountains, burst upon us and carried the ship out of her course.
15 Der riß das Schiff mit fort, und da es dem Wind nicht widerstehen konnte, so gaben wir es den Wogen preis und wurden dahingetrieben.
She was unable to make headway against the gale; so we gave up and let her drive.
16 Als wir unter einer kleinen Insel, namens Klauda, hinliefen, gelang es uns nur mit größter Mühe, das Rettungsboot zu bergen.
Then we ran under the lee of a little island called Cauda, where we managed with great difficulty to secure the boat;
17 Als sie es glücklich an Bord gezogen hatten, griffen sie zu einem Notbehelf und banden Taue um das Schiff. Aus Furcht, auf die Sandbänke der Syrte zu geraten, ließen sie das Geschirr nieder und wurden so vom Wind getrieben.
and, after hoisting it on board, they used frapping-cables to undergird the ship, and, as they were afraid of being driven on the Syrtis quicksands, they lowered the gear and lay to.
18 Weil wir aber vom Sturm schwer zu leiden hatten, so warfen sie am nächsten Tag einen Teil der Ladung über Bord.
But, as the storm was still violent, the next day they began to lighten the ship;
19 Am dritten Tag warfen sie mit eigener Hand das Schiffsgerät ins Wasser.
and, on the third day, with their own hands they threw the ship's spare gear overboard.
20 Mehrere Tage waren weder Sonne noch Sterne sichtbar, und der Sturm umtobte uns so heftig, daß uns endlich jeder Hoffnungsstrahl auf Rettung schwand.
Then, when for several days neither sun nor stars were seen and the terrific gale still harassed us, the last ray of hope was now vanishing.
21 Da die Leute auf dem Schiff schon seit langer Zeit fast nichts gegessen hatten, trat Paulus mitten unter sie und sprach: "Ihr Männer, man hätte auf mich hören und nicht von Kreta weiterfahren sollen; dann wäre uns diese Gefahr und dieser Schade erspart geblieben.
When for a long time they had taken but little food, Paul, standing up among them, said, "Sirs, you ought to have listened to me and not have sailed from Crete. You would then have escaped this suffering and loss.
22 Doch nun ermuntere ich euch: Seid guten Mutes! Denn keiner von euch wird ums Leben kommen; nur das Schiff geht verloren.
But now take courage, for there will be no destruction of life among you, but of the ship only.
23 Vergangene Nacht ist ein Bote des Gottes, dem ich angehöre und diene, zu mir getreten
For there stood by my side, last night, an angel of the God to whom I belong, and whom also I worship,
24 mit den Worten: 'Sei ohne Furcht, Paulus! Du mußt vor dem Kaiser erscheinen! Und sieh, Gott hat dir das Leben aller, die mit dir fahren, geschenkt.'
and he said, "'Dismiss all fear, Paul, for you must stand before Caesar; and God has granted you the lives of all who are sailing with you.'
25 Darum seid getrost, ihr Männer! Denn ich vertraue Gott, daß es so kommt, wie mir gesagt ist.
"Therefore, Sirs, take courage; for I believe God, and am convinced that things will happen exactly as I have been told.
26 Wir müssen aber an irgendeiner Insel stranden."
But we are to be stranded on a certain island."
27 So kam die vierzehnte Nacht, seit wir im Adriatischen Meer umhertrieben. Da, um Mitternacht, vermuteten die Matrosen, daß Land in der Nähe sei.
It was now the fourteenth night, and we were drifting through the Sea of Adria, when, about midnight, the sailors suspected that land was close at hand.
28 Sie warfen das Senkblei aus und fanden das Wasser zwanzig Klafter tief. Bald darauf maßen sie wieder und fanden fünfzehn Klafter.
So they hove the lead and found twenty fathoms of water; and after a short time they hove again and found fifteen fathoms.
29 Weil sie fürchteten, wir könnten irgendwo auf Klippen stoßen, warfen sie von dem Heck des Schiffes vier Anker aus und warteten voll Sehnsucht auf den Tagesanbruch.
Then for fear of possibly running on rocks, they threw out four anchors from the stern and waited impatiently for daylight.
30 Da die Matrosen aus dem Schiff zu entfliehen suchten und unter dem Vorgeben, sie wollten vom Vorderteil des Schiffes Anker werfen, das Rettungsboot ins Meer hinunterließen,
The sailors, however, wanted to make their escape from the ship, and had lowered the boat into the sea, pretending that they were going to lay out anchors from the bow.
31 sprach Paulus zu dem Hauptmann und den Soldaten: "Wenn diese Leute nicht im Schiff bleiben, so gibt's für euch keine Rettung."
But Paul, addressing Julius and the soldiers, said, "Your lives will be sacrificed, unless these men remain on board."
32 Da kappten die Soldaten die Taue, womit das Boot befestigt war, und ließen es ins Meer fallen. In der Zeit vor Tagesanbruch redete Paulus allen zu,
Then the soldiers cut the ropes of the ship's boat and let her fall off.
33 sie möchten Nahrung zu sich nehmen. "Heute sind es vierzehn Tage", sprach er, "daß ihr fortwährend, ohne zu essen, in Angst schwebt und nichts Rechtes zu euch genommen habt.
And continually, up till daybreak, Paul kept urging all on board to take some food. "This is the fourteenth day," he said, "that you have been anxiously waiting for the storm to cease, and have fasted, eating little or nothing.
34 Darum rate ich euch dringend, jetzt etwas zu genießen. Das ist mit zu eurer Rettung nötig. Denn keinem von euch wird ein Haar von seinem Haupt fallen."
I therefore strongly advise you to take some food. This is essential for your safety. For not a hair will perish from the head of any one of you."
35 Nach diesen Worten nahm er Brot, dankte Gott in aller Gegenwart, brach es und begann zu essen.
Having said this he took some bread, and, after giving thanks to God for it before them all, he broke it in pieces and began to eat it.
36 Da wurden sie alle gutes Mutes und aßen auch.
This raised the spirits of all, and they too took food.
37 Wir waren im ganzen 276 Menschen an Bord.
There were 276 of us, crew and passengers, all told.
38 Als sie sich satt gegessen hatten, warfen sie die Getreideladung ins Meer, um das Schiff zu erleichtern.
After eating a hearty meal they lightened the ship by throwing the wheat overboard.
39 Bei Tagesanbruch konnte man das Land nicht erkennen. Man bemerkte aber eine Bucht mit einem flachen Ufer und beschloß, das Schiff womöglich dort auf den Strand laufen zu lassen.
When daylight came, they tried in vain to recognise the coast. But an inlet with a sandy beach attracted their attention, and now their object was, if possible, to run the ship aground in this inlet.
40 So kappte man die Ankertaue und ließ die Anker im Meer. Zugleich löste man die Taue, mit denen die beiden Steuerruder (während des Treibens) festgebunden waren. Dann hißten sie das Focksegel gegen den Wind und steuerten auf den Strand zu.
So they cut away the anchors and left them in the sea, unloosing at the same time the bands which secured the paddle-rudders. Then, hoisting the foresail to the wind, they made for the beach.
41 Dabei gerieten sie aber auf eine Sandbank und ließen nun das Schiff auflaufen. Doch nur das Vorderteil stemmte sich fest und blieb unbeweglich, während das Heck des Schiffes durch den Anprall der Wogen mehr und mehr zertrümmert wurde.
But coming to a place where two seas met, they stranded the ship, and her bow sticking fast remained immovable, while the stern began to go to pieces under the heavy hammering of the sea.
42 Die Soldaten waren willens, die Gefangenen zu töten, damit keiner von ihnen ans Land schwimmen und entfliehen könne.
Now the soldiers recommended that the prisoners should be killed, for fear some one of them might swim ashore and effect his escape.
43 Der Hauptmann aber wollte Paulus retten und verhinderte das Vorhaben. Er befahl, alle, die schwimmen könnten, sollten zuerst über Bord springen, um ans Land zu kommen.
But their Captain, bent on securing Paul's safety, kept them from their purpose and gave orders that those who could swim should first jump overboard and get to land;
44 Die anderen sollten folgen, teils auf Planken, teils auf anderen Stücken von dem Wrack des Schiffes. So gelang es allen, sich ans Land zu retten.
and that the rest should follow, some on planks, and others on various things from the ship. In this way they all got safely to land.
