Ruth 3

1 Or, après que Ruth fut retournée près de sa belle-mère, elle entendit d’elle: Ma fille, je chercherai pour toi du repos, et je pourvoirai à ce que bien t’arrive.

Then Naomi her mother-in-law said to her, My daughter, shall I not seek rest for thee, that it may be well with thee?

2 Ce Booz, aux jeunes filles duquel tu t’es jointe dans le champ, est notre parent; et cette nuit il vanne l’aire de l’orge.

And now [is] not Boaz of our kindred, with whose maidens thou wast? Behold, he winnoweth barley to-night in the threshing-floor.

3 Lave-toi donc, parfume-toi, revêts-toi de tes plus beaux habits, et descends dans l’aire: que cet homme ne te voie point, jusqu’à ce qu’il ait fini de manger et de boire.

Wash thyself therefore, and anoint thee, and put thy raiment upon thee, and go down to the floor: [but] make not thyself known to the man, until he shall have done eating and drinking.

4 Mais quand il ira dormir, remarque le lieu, où il dort; et tu viendras, et tu découvriras la couverture dont il est couvert du côté des pieds, puis tu te coucheras, et tu demeureras là; mais lui-même te dira ce que tu dois faire.

And it shall be when he lieth down, that thou shalt mark the place where he shall lie, and thou shalt go in, and uncover his feet, and lay thee down; and he will tell thee what thou shalt do.

5 Ruth répondit: Tout ce que vous ordonnerez, je le ferai.

And she said to her, All that thou sayest to me I will do.

6 Elle descendit donc dans l’aire, et elle fit tout ce que sa belle-mère lui avait commandé.

And she went down to the floor, and did according to all that her mother-in-law bade her.

7 Et lorsque Booz eut mangé et bu, et qu’il fut devenu plus gai, et qu’il fut allé dormir près du tas de gerbes, elle vint secrètement, et, la couverture écartée du côté des pieds, elle se coucha.

And when Boaz had eaten and drank, and his heart was merry, he went to lie down at the end of the heap of corn: and she came softly, and uncovered his feet, and laid herself down.

8 Et voilà qu’au milieu même de la nuit cet homme fut effrayé et se troubla, lorsqu’il vit une femme couchée à ses pieds,

And it came to pass at midnight, that the man was afraid, and turned himself: and behold, a woman lay at his feet.

9 Et il lui dit: Qui es-tu? Et elle lui répondit: Je suis Ruth, votre servante: étendez votre couverture sur votre servante, parce que vous êtes mon parent.

And he said, Who [art] thou? And she answered, I [am] Ruth thy handmaid: spread therefore thy skirt over thy handmaid; for thou [art] a near kinsman.

10 Et lui: Ma fille, dit-il, tu es bénie du Seigneur, et tu as surpassé la première miséricorde par la dernière, parce que tu n’as pas recherché les jeunes gens, pauvres ou riches.

And he said, Blessed [be] thou of the LORD, my daughter: [for] thou hast shown more kindness in the latter end than at the beginning, inasmuch as thou didst not follow young men, whether poor or rich.

11 Ne crains donc point; mais tout ce que tu me diras, je le ferai pour toi; car tout le peuple qui habite au dedans des portes de ma ville sait que tu es une femme de vertu.

And now, my daughter, fear not; I will do to thee all that thou requirest: for all the city of my people doth know that thou [art] a virtuous woman.

12 Et je ne désavoue pas que je sois parent; mais il y en a un autre plus proche que moi.

And now it is true that I [am thy] near kinsman: yet there is a kinsman nearer than I.

13 Repose-toi cette nuit, et le matin venu, s’il veut te retenir par le droit de parenté, c’est une bonne chose; mais s’il ne veut pas, moi, sans aucun doute, je te prendrai, le Seigneur vit! Dors jusqu’au matin.

Tarry this night, and it shall be in the morning, [that] if he will perform to thee the part of a kinsman, well; let him do the kinsman's part: but if he will not do the part of a kinsman to thee, then will I do the part of a kinsman to thee, [as] the LORD liveth: lie down until the morning.

14 C’est pourquoi elle dormit à ses pieds jusqu’à l’éloignement de la nuit. C’est pourquoi elle se leva avant que les hommes se reconnussent mutuellement, et Booz dit: Prends garde que personne ne sache que tu es venue ici.

And she lay at his feet until the morning: and she rose before one could know another. And he said, Let it not be known that a woman came to the floor.

15 Et de nouveau: Étends dit-il, ton manteau dont tu te couvres, et tiens-le de l’une et l’autre main. Et, Ruth l’étendant et le tenant, il mesura six boisseaux d’orge et les mit sur elle; et elle, les portant, entra dans la ville,

Also he said, Bring the vail that [thou hast] upon thee, and hold it. And when she held it, he measured six [measures] of barley, and laid [it] on her: and she went into the city.

16 Et vint vers sa belle-mère, qui lui dit: Qu’as-tu fait, ma fille? Et elle lui raconta tout ce que cet homme avait fait pour elle.

And when she came to her mother-in-law, she said, Who [art] thou, my daughter? And she told her all that the man had done to her.

17 Et elle ajouta: Voici six boisseaux d’orge qu’il m’a donnés, et il a dit: Je ne veux pas que tu retournes les mains vides vers ta belle-mère.

And she said, These six [measures] of barley he gave me; for he said to me, Go not empty to thy mother-in-law.

18 Et Noémi dit: Attends, ma fille, jusqu’à ce que nous voyons quelle fin aura la chose; car cet homme n’aura point de repos qu’il n’ait accompli ce qu’il a dit.

Then said she, Sit still, my daughter, until thou knowest how the matter will fall: for the man will not be in rest, until he hath finished the thing this day.
