Ruth 1
1 Aux jours d’un juge, lorsque les juges gouvernaient, il y eut une famine sur la terre. Or, un homme s’en alla de Bethléhem de Juda, pour voyager dans le pays de Moab, avec sa femme et ses deux enfants.
It happened in the days when the judges ruled that there was a famine in the land, and a certain man of Bethlehem of Judah went to the country of Moab with his wife and his two sons.
2 Cet homme s’appelait Elimélech, sa femme Noémi, et ses deux fils, l’un Mahalon et l’autre Chélion; ils étaient Ephrathéens de Bethléhem de Juda. Or, étant entrés dans le pays de Moab, ils y demeurèrent.
The name of the man was Elimelek, and the name of his wife was Naomi. The names of his two sons were Mahlon and Kilion, who were Ephrathites of Bethlehem of Judah. They arrived at the country of Moab and lived there.
3 Et Elimélech, mari de Noémi, mourut; et elle resta avec ses fils,
Then Elimelek, Naomi's husband, died, and she was left with her two sons.
4 Qui prirent des femmes moabites, dont l’une s’appelait Orpha, et l’autre Ruth. Et ils demeurèrent là pendant dix ans,
These sons took wives from the women of Moab; the name of one was Orpah, and the name of the other was Ruth. They lived there for about ten years.
5 Puis ils moururent tous deux, c’est-à-dire Mahalon et Chélion: et cette femme resta seule privée de ses deux enfants et de son mari.
Then both Mahlon and Kilion died, leaving Naomi without her husband and without her two children.
6 Elle se leva donc pour aller du pays de Moab dans sa patrie avec l’une et l’autre de ses belles-filles; car elle avait appris que le Seigneur avait regardé son peuple et lui avait donné de la nourriture.
Then Naomi decided to leave Moab with her daughters-in-law and return to Judah because she had heard in the region of Moab that Yahweh had helped his people in need and had given them food.
7 C’est pourquoi elle sortit du lieu de son pèlerinage avec l’une et l’autre de ses belles-filles; et s’étant déjà mise en chemin pour retourner dans la terre de Juda,
So she left the place where she had been with her two daughters-in-law, and they walked down the road to return to the land of Judah.
8 Elle leur dit: Allez en la maison de votre mère, que le Seigneur vous fasse miséricorde, comme vous l’avez faite à ceux qui sont morts, et à moi.
Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, “Go, return, each of you, to your mother's house. May Yahweh show kindness toward you, as you have shown kindness toward the dead and toward me.
9 Qu’il vous donne de trouver du repos dans les maisons des maris qui doivent vous échoir. Et elle les embrassa. Et elles, la voix élevée, se mirent à pleurer,
May the Lord grant you that you find rest, each of you in the house of another husband.” Then she kissed them, and they raised their voices and cried.
10 Et à dire: Nous irons avec vous chez votre peuple.
They said to her, “No! We will return with you to your people.”
11 Noémi leur répondit: Retournez, mes filles, pourquoi venez-vous avec moi? Est-ce que j’ai encore des fils dans mon sein, pour que vous puissiez espérer de moi des maris?
But Naomi said, “Turn back, my daughters! Why will you go with me? Do I still have sons in my womb for you, so that they may become your husbands?
12 Retournez, mes filles, et allez-vous-en; je suis déjà usée de vieillesse, et nullement propre au lien conjugal. Quand même je pourrais concevoir cette nuit et enfanter des fils,
Turn back, my daughters, go your own way, for I am too old to have a husband. If I said, 'I hope I get a husband tonight,' and then give birth to sons,
13 Si vous vouliez les attendre jusqu’à ce qu’ils eussent grandi et achevé les années de puberté vous seriez vieilles avant de les épouser. Non, mes filles, je vous prie; parce que votre angoisse pèse trop sur moi, et la main du Seigneur est sortie contre moi.
would you therefore wait until they were grown? Would you choose not to marry a husband? No, my daughters! It is exceedingly bitter to me for your sake that the hand of Yahweh has gone out against me.”
14 Ainsi, la voix élevée, elles se mirent de nouveau à pleurer. Orpha embrassa sa belle-mère, et s’en retourna; Ruth s’attacha à sa belle-mère;
Then her daughters-in-law lifted up their voices and cried again. Orpah kissed her mother-in-law farewell, but Ruth held on to her.
15 Et Noémi lui dit: Voilà ta belle-sœur qui est retournée à son peuple et à ses dieux, va avec elle.
Naomi said, “Listen, your sister-in-law has gone back to her people and to her gods. Go back with your sister-in-law.”
16 Ruth répondit: N’insistez point auprès de moi, pour que je vous quitte et que je m’en aille, car partout où vous irez, j’irai; et là où vous demeurerez, moi aussi je demeurerai. Votre peuple est mon peuple, et votre Dieu mon Dieu.
But Ruth said, “Do not make me go away from you, for where you go, I will go; where you stay, I will stay; your people will be my people, and your God will be my God.
17 Et la terre qui vous recevra mourante, j’y mourrai; et c’est là que je prendrai le lieu de ma sépulture. Que le Seigneur me fasse ceci et qu’il ajoute cela, si ce n’est pas la mort seule qui me sépare de vous.
Where you die, I will die, and there I will be buried. May Yahweh punish me, and even more, if anything but death ever separates us.”
18 Noémi voyant donc que Ruth avait opiniâtrement résolu d’aller avec elle, ne voulut plus s’y opposer, ni lui persuader de retourner vers les siens.
When Naomi saw that Ruth was determined to go with her, she stopped arguing with her.
19 Et elles partirent ensemble, et elles vinrent à Bethléhem. Entrées dans la ville, le bruit s’en répandit promptement parmi tous les habitants, et les femmes disaient: Voilà cette Noémi.
So the two traveled until they came to the town of Bethlehem. It happened that when they arrived in Bethlehem, the entire town was very excited about them. The women said, “Is this Naomi?”
20 Noémi leur dit: Ne m’appelez point Noémi (c’est-à-dire belle); mais appelez-moi Mara (c’est-à-dire amère), parce que le Tout-Puissant m’a remplie d’une grande amertume.
But she said to them, “Do not call me Naomi. Call me Bitter, for the Almighty has dealt very bitterly with me.
21 Je suis sortie pleine, et le Seigneur m’a ramenée vide. Pourquoi donc m’appelez-vous Noémi, moi que le Seigneur a humiliée et que le Tout-Puissant a affligée.
I went out full, but Yahweh has brought me home again empty. So why do you call me Naomi, seeing Yahweh has condemned me, that the Almighty has afflicted me?”
22 Noémi vint donc avec Ruth, la Moabite, sa belle-fille, de la terre de son pèlerinage; et elle revint à Bethléhem, quand on commençait à moissonner les orges.
So Naomi and Ruth the Moabite woman, her daughter-in-law, returned from the country of Moab. They came to Bethlehem at the beginning of the barley harvest.
