1 Quel avantage dirons-nous donc qu’Abraham, notre père, a eu selon la chair?
What then shall we say of Abraham, our ancestor in the flesh?
2 Car si Abraham a été justifié par les œuvres, il a de quoi se glorifier, mais non devant Dieu.
For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to be proud of, but not before God.
3 En effet, que dit l’Ecriture? Abraham crut à Dieu, et ce lui fut imputé à justice.
For what does Scripture say? And Abraham believed God, and it was set down to his account as righteousness.
4 Or à celui qui travaille, le salaire n’est point imputé comme une grâce, mais comme une dette.
Now if a man earn his pay by his work, it is not counted to him as a favor, but it is paid him as a debt;
5 Au contraire, à celui qui ne fait pas les œuvres, mais qui croit en celui qui justifie l’impie, sa foi est imputée à justice, selon le décret de la grâce de Dieu.
but a man who does not "work," but believes in him who justifies the ungodly, has his faith imputed to him for righteousness.
6 C’est ainsi que David appelle heureux l’homme à qui Dieu impute la justice sans les œuvres:
Just as David also speaks of the blessedness of the man to whom God imputes righteousness apart from actions.
7 Bienheureux ceux dont les iniquités ont été remises, et dont les péchés ont été couverts.
Blessed he says are they whose iniquities have been forgiven, And whose sins have been covered.
8 Bienheureux l’homme à qui le Seigneur n’a pas imputé de péché.
Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin.
9 Or cette béatitude est-elle seulement pour les circoncis? N’est-elle pas aussi pour les incirconcis? Car nous venons de dire que la foi d’Abraham lui a été imputée à justice.
Is this blessing, then, for the circumcised alone? or for the uncircumcised also? Abraham’s faith, I say, was imputed to him for righteousness.
10 Quand donc lui a-t-elle été imputée? Est-ce après la circoncision, ou avant la circoncision? Ce n’est point après la circoncision, mais avant la circoncision.
How then was it imputed to him? When he was circumcised? or uncircumcised? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision;
11 Et il ne reçut la marque de la circoncision que comme sceau de la justice qu’il avait déjà acquise par la foi, étant encore incirconcis, et pour être le père de tous les croyants incirconcis, afin que la foi leur fût aussi imputée à justice,
and he received circumcision as a sign, a seal of the faith- righteousness which he had while he was in uncircumcision; in order that he might be the father of all who believe, even though they are uncircumcised; so that righteousness might be imputed to them.
12 Et pour être père de la circoncision, non-seulement des circoncis, mais aussi de ceux qui suivent les traces de la foi qui était en notre père Abraham, encore incirconcis.
He is the father of circumcision to those who are not merely circumcised, but who also walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham which he held while he was as yet uncircumcised.
13 Car ce n’est pas en vertu de la loi qu’a été faite à Abraham ou à sa postérité la promesse d’avoir le monde pour héritage, mais c’est en vertu de la justice de la foi.
For the promise that he should be heir of the world did not come to Abraham or to his posterity through law, but through faith- righteousness.
14 Et si ceux qui ont reçu la loi sont héritiers, la foi devient vaine, et la promesse est abolie;
For if those who are righteous through law are heirs, faith is empty and the promise becomes void.
15 Attendu que la loi opère la colère; car où il n’y a point de loi, il n’y a point de prévarication.
For law works wrath; but where there is no law, neither is there transgression.
16 Ainsi c’est à la foi qu’est attachée la promesse, afin qu’elle soit gratuite et assurée à toute la postérité d’Abraham, non seulement à celle qui a reçu la loi, mais encore à celle qui suit la foi d’Abraham, qui est le père de nous tous,
This is why righteousness is of faith, that it may be a free gift; so that the promise stands firm to all Abraham’s posterity; not to his children of his faith. For in the sight of the God in whom he believed, who gives life to the dead, and calls into being that which is not, Abraham is the father of us all both Jews and Gentiles,
17 (Selon qu’il est écrit: Je t’ai établi père d’une multitude de nations), devant Dieu à qui il a cru, qui vivifie les morts, et appelle les choses qui ne sont pas, comme celles qui sont;
as it is written, I have made you a father of many nations.
18 Qui, ayant espéré contre l’espérance même, a cru qu’il deviendrait le père d’un grand nombre de nations, selon ce qui lui fut dit: Ainsi sera ta postérité.
For Abraham, hoping against hope, had faith to the end that he might become a father of many nations, according to that which had been spoken, So numberless shall your descendants be.
19 Et sa foi ne faiblit point, et il ne considéra ni son corps éteint, puisqu’il avait déjà environ cent ans, ni l’impuissance de Sara.
Though he was about a hundred years old, his faith did not fail him when he regarded his own body, now as good as dead. and remembered Sarah’s barrenness.
20 Il n’hésita point, en défiance de la promesse de Dieu; mais il se fortifia par la foi, rendant gloire à Dieu,
Nor did he with regard to the promise of God waver in unbelief, but he waxed strong in faith, while he gave God glory,
21 Pleinement assuré que tout ce qu’il a promis, il est puissant pour le faire.
and was fully persuaded that what God had promised, he was able also to perform.
22 Voilà pourquoi ce lui fut même imputé à justice.
And so his faith was reckoned to him for righteousness.
23 Or, ce n’est pas pour lui seul qu’il est écrit que ce lui fut imputé à justice;
Now these words were not written simply for his sake, but for us as well.
24 Mais pour nous aussi, à qui il sera imputé de même, si nous croyons en celui qui a ressuscité d’entre les morts Jésus-Christ Notre Seigneur,
For it will be "reckoned for righteousness." to us also, who believe on him that raised from the dead our Lord Jesus;
25 Qui a été livré pour nos péchés, et qui est ressuscité pour notre justification.
who was betrayed to death for our transgressions, and raised again to life for our justification.
